Chiefly made from cream-colored silk(although other threads are known), this lace from Malta is characterized by the same trails and plaits as Beds [Bedfordshire lace], but differs in making frequent use of a distinctive cross in cloth stitch, called a Maltese or St. John's cross. The leaves in this lace tend to be wide and fat, much more so than any other of the related laces such as Beds and Beds-Maltese. 3, record 3, English, - Maltese%20lace

It was during the Renaissance that Italian embroidery was famous throughout Europe for its meticulous detail and technical proficiency. Under the patronage of the Medicis, Florence became an important centre for embroidery. Prominent artists such as Raphael, were commissioned to make designs to be stiched by such men as Antonio Pollaiuolo, whose embroideries were recognised as important examples of Renaissance art. In Venice, typical openwork evolved into lace, removing threads and replacing them with stiches. Casalguidi is known for another distinct form of white linen embroidery and in Florence expensive silk and woollen threads were worked on canvas in a technique known today as "Bargello work" after the palace there. 1, record 4, English, - Italian%20embroidery

Carrickmacross lace... is made with a sewing needle. The materials used are very fine net, made from cotton or silk or fine muslin, translucent enough to allow the pattern to be seen through it. The pattern is printed on to a glazed linen material; the net and then the muslin are placed on top. All are tacked together and a fine cord is taken around the outline of the pattern and couched down into position. The excess fabric is cut away around the outline of the design. The exposed net is then decorated with filling stitches such as double dot, basket, daisy, cobweb, etc. The finished lace is edged with tiny loops and the complete piece is then detached from the pattern. 4, record 6, English, - Carrickmacross%20lace

2, record 6, French, - dentelle%20carrickmacross
