The intrinsic angular momentum of an elementary particle or nucleus, which exists even when the particle is at rest, as distinguished from orbital angular momentum. 3, record 2, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense. 1, record 2, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin

Interaction fluide-structure [...] 3, record 6, French, - corps%20rigide

The Two Frame Gyroscope. When the rotor is spinning and the spin axis is in a horizontal plane a definite resistance will be felt owing to gyroscope inertia, at the same time the spin axis will begin to precess in a vertical plane and will continue to do so with sufficient power to lift light weights until all the gyroscopic inertia disappears due to the rotor slowing and stopping. The Three Frame Gyroscope. If the base of a three framed gyroscope is held in the hand with the rotor spinning and turned about any of the three axes, the rotor will continue to point in the original direction in space. This property is known as gyroscope inertia. 2, record 7, English, - three%2Dframe%20gyroscope

2, record 7, French, - gyroscope%20%C3%A0%20trois%20cadres

Most spacecraft are stabilized in flight either by spinning around a major axis, or by maintaining a fixed orientation in space, referenced to the Sun and another star. As the first dual-spin planetary spacecraft, Galileo combines these techniques. A spinning section rotates at about 3 rpm, and a "despun" section is counter-rotated to provide a fixed orientation for cameras and other remote sensors. A star scanner on the spinning side determines orientation and spin rate; gyroscopes on the despun side provide the basis for measuring turns and pointing instruments. 3, record 9, English, - despun%20section

Gel spinning is a special process used to obtain high strength or other special fiber properties. The polymer is not in a true liquid state during extrusion. Not completely separated, as they would be in a true solution, the polymer chains are bound together at various points in liquid crystal form. This produces strong inter-chain forces in the resulting filaments that can significantly increase the tensile strength of the fibers. In addition, the liquid crystals are aligned along the fiber axis by the shear forces during extrusion. The filaments emerge with an unusually high degree of orientation relative to each other, further enhancing strength. 1, record 11, English, - gel%20spinning
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The process can also be described as dry-wet spinning, since the filaments first pass through air and then are cooled further in a liquid bath. Some high-strength polyethylene and aramid fibers are produced by gel spinning. 1, record 11, English, - gel%20spinning

Record number: 12, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The angular momentum of a tumbling orbiting satellite is changed to reduce the spinning of the spacecraft such that the spacecraft can operate in an essentially stabilized condition. The change in spin rate is accomplished by the development of a magnetic torque by commutation of magnetic air coils in response to Earth sensor signals controlled by spacecraft logic. The coils are disposed to produce magnetic dipoles transverse to the satellite spin axis such that by interacting with the Earth's magnetic field a torque is developed in a direction opposite the spin vector. The logic selects the proper magnetic dipole based upon data from sensors detecting the presence of the Earth for the development of the desired magnetic torque. 5, record 12, English, - magnetotorquer

Gyroscopes can be used as devices for direction finding, guidance, and control. If a gyroscope, mounted on its gimbal rings, is set spinning about a horizontal axis, and the outer gimbal ring is rotated in a horizontal plane, then the inner gimbal ring, carrying the flywheel, tilts up out of the horizontal plane in which it, too first lay. After a few oscillations, damped out by friction, the axis of spin of the gyroscope settles down along a vertical direction. Inertial guidance systems make use of very similar phenomena. Once a gyroscope has been set spinning about a chosen axis, any motion that would cause it to deviate from this direction calls into existence a torque that can be used as an error signal to control corrective maneuvers... Some of the most important applications of gyroscopic phenomena are in aircraft instruments. A free(perfectly balanced) gyroscope can give a constant indication of a chosen reference direction for checking the correct course, and a gravitationally loaded gyroscope can be used to identify the true vertical at all times and so define an artificial horizon against which the pilot can measure the angles of bank and climb. 2, record 14, English, - gyroscopic%20phenomenon

Electrostatically suspended gyro... While the rotating member is spherical, the inertia about one axis(polar) is less than that about the other two. This facilitates the startup, which begins with the rotating element being levitated electrostatically; motor windings outside the evacuated chamber then spin up the rotor. Since the inertias are different, the rotor quickly assumes a preferred attitude, spinning about the axis of minimum inertia. 1, record 21, English, - axis%20of%20minimum%20inertia

A more advanced type of gyro is the optical gyroscope. These devices are based on two counter-rotating beams of light travelling in a ring-like structure. The interaction of the two light beams produces a standing wave pattern. If the ring is then rotated about its centre axis(think of a torus spinning around its core), one of the beams has to travel a slightly longer distance, and the other a slightly shorter distance to get back to where they started. This will cause a shift in the pattern of the standing wave, and this can be measured to determine the rate of rotation. 3, record 32, English, - optical%20gyro

Most people would remember the classic rotating disc gyroscope, which belongs to the mechanical group. One of today’s high precision gyros is still the mechanical, rotating gyro; however it is dependent on linear accelerations because of its mechanical measuring principle. The optical group comprises the fibre optic- and laser types. These use the Sagnac Effect (named after its French discoverer), which, when the sensor is turned, results in a difference in transit time between two light waves passing through the same optical path but in opposite directions. Optical gyros therefore do not depend on acceleration as gyros in the mechanical group. This is one of their biggest advantages ... 4, record 32, English, - optical%20gyro

2, record 32, French, - gyroscope%20optique

2, record 42, English, - two%2Dframe%20gyroscope

2, record 42, French, - gyroscope%20%C3%A0%20deux%20cadres

The three elementary movements of a gyroscope :... 1. Rotation--the top is spinning rapidly about its vertical axis. 2. Precession--as it slows down, the top cants over and its axis follows a conical path. 3. Nutation--as the top spins more slowly still, the axis oscillates in a sinusoidal path. 4, record 43, English, - nutation

Centrifugal force throws off the oil in droplets at the periphery of the cup or plates.... Centrifugal Atomizing Oil Burner. There are 2 basic types : Horizontal Rotary Oil Burner-oil is pumped through a horizontal, hollow, drive shaft to a spinning cup. The axis of the cup is also horizontal. Vertical Rotary Oil Burner-the oil tank is mounted higher than the burner, and oil flows downward by gravity to the spinning plates. 7, record 46, English, - rotary%20oil%20burner
