Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A defect developing in one or both sides of the neural arch of usually the fifth, and occasionally the fourth, lumbar vertebra, resulting in a loss of bony continuity of the pars interarticularis. Once thought to be a congenital defect, it is now known to develop during postnatal life. It may also represent a stress fracture from often-repeated stresses or an ordinary fracture from a single injury. The precise etiology of spondylolysis, however, remains obscure. 2, record 2, English, - spondylolysis
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
When bilateral defects are present, the anterior vertebral body may slip forward while the posterior arch remains behind; the result is a true spondylolisthesis. 3, record 2, English, - spondylolysis

3, record 2, French, - spondylolyse

Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A sign of defective ossification in the pars interarticularis of a vertebra(spondylolysis). On oblique views of the lumbar spine, the appearance of the posterior elements has been likened to that of a scotty dog. The pedicle and transverse process form the eye and nose; the superior and inferior articular processes form the ear and leg; and the pars interarticularis forms the neck. A defect in the pars interarticularis thus appears as a collar around the neck of the scotty dog. [From MESRO, 1984, vol. 3., pp. 21, 26 and EISER, 1984, p. 372. ] 3, record 6, English, - scotty%20dog%20sign

It is now believed that the majority of these lesions are attributable to stress fractures of one or both sides of the neural arch through the relatively weak pars interarticularis. 4, record 6, English, - scotty%20dog%20sign
