CONT

Whether the light source overfills or underfills the fiber, mode content of long-length multimode fiber systems generally settle to steady-state conditions, also known as equilibrium mode distribution(EMD), after about 1 km to 2 km from the light source. Insertion-loss readings taken a short distance away from the source can be considerably different from insertion-loss readings 1 km or 2 km away from the source, which can also be misleading.

CONT

Although several methods can be used to estimate the effects of mass transfer to the immobilized enzyme carrier surface from the bulk liquid, the conditions encountered are not typical of those frequently encountered in other applications. Laminar liquid flow with a low-Reynolds number falling outside the range of many mass transfer correlations is normal for immobilized enzyme systems. The rate of mass transfer from the bulk solution to a surface can be written as... where km is the mass transfer coefficient(with units of cm/s), am is the surface area per unit volume(cm[ superscript-1]), Sb is the bulk phase substrate concentration, and Ss is the substrate concentration at the surface. Under steady-state conditions, this mass transfer rate must equal the reaction rate at the particle surface or the apparent rate within the particle.

CONT

Subject field(s)

CONT

Heat pump performance. The heat delivered by a heat pump is theoretically the sum of the heat extracted from the heat source and the energy needed to drive the cycle. The steady-state performance of an electric compression heat pump at a given set of temperature conditions is referred to as the coefficient of performance(COP). It is defined as the ratio of heat delivered by the heat pump and the electricity supplied to the compressor.

CONT

The distinction between the transient and permanent regime is essential : in particular, the "steady-state regime" must be understood as the regime that is reached asymptotically, long after transients have decayed(long time limit). Permanent regime can be simple, i. e., time-independent, time-periodic, or more complicated, i. e., quasi-periodic or even chaotic. The fundamental theoretical problem is then to "predict" the characteristics of the permanent regime reached by a given system as a function of available initial conditions and control parameters.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mécanique des fluides et hydraulique (Physique)
CONT
