STEALTH AIRCRAFT [10 records]

Record 1 2020-12-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Counter-Measures (Military operations)
CONT

Passive countermeasures. Passive countermeasures can include camouflage for land units or stealth technology for aircraft and ships, making it harder for the enemy to find, fix or track units. Valuable mobile assets such as aircraft, ships, headquarters can also be dispersed so that they do not present too tempting a target, or hidden among civilian objects, or moved around in a manner that complicates an adversary's targeting.

Subject field(s)

CONT

Stealth aircraft are made from materials that absorb radar signals. Moreover, the aircraft's design is such that any signals that are reflected, move away from the radar. Thus, the aircraft is invisible to radar. Stealth combat aircraft are expected to play a very important role in future conflicts.

DEF

The popular name for a flight deck or cockpit equipped with "head down" electronic displays usually replacing most of the conventional instrumentation.

CONT

Modern "glass cockpits" like those in the Boeing 777, the F-117 stealth fighter and Shuttle Atlantis represent a revolution in the way cockpits for aircraft and spacecraft are designed and built today. The first hints of this revolution appeared in the 1970s when flight-worthy cathode ray tube(CRT) screens began to replace a few of the electromechanical displays, gauges and instruments that had served so well for so long. These new "glass" instruments, as few and as primitive as they were, gave the cockpit a distinctly different look and suggested the name, "glass cockpit. "

OBS

glass cockpit; glass CRT cockpit: terms officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

DEF

A sub-discipline of electronic countermeasures which covers a range of techniques used with aircraft, ships and missiles, in order to make them less visible (ideally invisible) to radar, infrared and other detection methods.

CONT

Stealth technology has as its fundamental principle the prevention of detection by the enemy, and applies not only to aircraft as is commonly assumed, but also increasingly to naval vessels and to armoured vehicles, although in the latter cases, it is nascent technology upon which comment must be reserved. Stealth technology, therefore, does not simply mean the evasion by aircraft of radar through the reduction of radar signature. It also encompasses the reduction of an aircraft's visibility in other spectra, most notably acoustic, visual, and infra-red. Consequently the popular term "stealth technology" would perhaps be better referred to as "low-observable technology. "

The Northrop Grumman MALD is a slender UAV with pop-out wings, and is powered by a 10. 2 centimeter(4 inch) diameter Sundstrand TJ-50 turbojet.... MALD's autopilot will include a commercial GPS receiver. The decoy will incorporate a programmable active radar enhancement payload designed by Northrop Grumman that can be programmed to allow it to impersonate different aircraft, from stealth fighter to B-52s.... Three MALDs can be carried on a stores pylon, compared with one ITALD or comparable decoy drone. The MALDs can be programmed to fly formations simulating those of combat aircraft, such as the classic lead and wingman arrangement. The course of a MALD can be programmed by displaying a digital map on a computer and then using a mouse to click on the appropriate map "waypoints", and the "wingman" can then be programmed to follow the same course with an offset. The MALD's computer will be able to follow a large number of waypoints over a 460 kilometer(286 mile) course. It will also be sophisticated enough to simulate maneuvers typical of attack aircraft.

OBS

Mald devrait s'écrire MALD.

[The] B-2 Spirit originally started as Project Senior CJ and [was] later renamed as ATB(Advance Tactical Bomber). The B-2 uses four F-118 Turbofans.... The turbofan has intake and exhaust at the top of the aircraft to prevent ground control to spot them. The pilot and co-pilot are seated side by side in a zero-zero vertically ejecting ACES II seats.... a B-2 can get updates for GPS satellites to avoid ground firing while the pilot spots the target. Once the target is found, the pilot will turn on special radar, which only scan the target area and once spotted the B-2 will launch its nuclear ordnance or SRAM II missiles.... the B-2 provides the penetrating flexibility and effectiveness inherent in manned bombers. Its low-observable, or "stealth, "characteristics give it the unique ability to penetrate an enemy's most sophisticated defenses and threaten its most-valued, and heavily defended targets. Its unrefueled range is approximately 6, 000 nautical miles(9, 600 kilometers). The B-2's low observability is derived from a combination of reduced infrared, acoustic, electromagnetic, visual and radar signatures.
