Aircraft refuelling and defuelling is controlled by a separate subsystem within the overall fuel system. The aircraft is fuelled by means of a refuelling receptacle that connects to the refuelling tanker. From the receptacle it enters a refuelling gallery which distributes the incoming fuel to the various aircraft tanks. The control of fuel entry into each tank is undertaken by valves that are under the control of the fuel management system.

CONT

The airport ground refueling system supplies fuel to the aircraft at high enough flows and pressures to allow refueling of the aircraft in a short period of time. Aircraft refueling is performed prior to almost every flight whereas defueling is primarily performed during maintenance actions.

Many spacecraft use small rockets called thrusters to move around in space. Thrusters can change the speed and direction of a spacecraft. They allow a spacecraft to steer in space, to jump to a higher orbit, or to fall back to Earth.

CONT

The control rocket is a vernier or other rocket used to control the attitude of, or slightly change the speed of, a spacecraft.

CONT

The propulsion subsystem featured sets of small thrusters and a main engine. The thrusters were used to perform Odyssey's attitude control and trajectory correction manoeuvres, while the main engine was used to place the spacecraft in orbit around Mars. The main engine, which used hydrazine propellant with nitrogen tetroxide as an oxidiser, produced a minimum thrust of 65. 3 kilograms of force. Each of the four thrusters used for attitude control produce a thrust of 0. 1 kilogram of force. Four 2. 3-kilogram-force thrusters were used for turning the spacecraft. In addition to miscellaneous tubing, pyro valves and filters, the propulsion subsystem also included a single gaseous helium tank used to pressurise the fuel and oxidiser tanks. The propulsion subsystem weighed 49. 7 kilograms.

The RADARSAT-2 satellite ... consists of a Bus Module and a Payload Module [...] The RADARSAT-2 bus consists of elements that provide general support functions such as ... thermal control ...

OBS

The thermal control subsystem is a key system on which the successful performance of the spacecraft ultimately depends. Electronics equipment must operate within a relatively narrow temperature band if proper functioning is to be achieved and thermal failure avoided. This operating temperature range must be maintained in a vehicle that will be exposed to extreme temperature gradients. Heat generated internally must also be managed. Typically, satellites will spin to keep any part of the surface from getting too hot or cold.

CONT

An external Ultra High Frequency(UHF) antenna... will be attached to the station's U. S. laboratory Destiny... The antenna, on a four-foot boom, is part of the UHF Communications Subsystem of the station. It will interact with systems already aboard the ISS [International Space Station], including the Space-to-Space Station Radio(SSSR) transceivers. A second antenna will be delivered on STS-115/11A next year. Once in operation the UHF subsystem will be used for space-to-space communication(voice, commands and telemetry for the space station). It can support up to five users on the same frequency and provides : Two-way voice communications between the station and space walkers, the station and orbiter and between the Mission Control Center in Houston and space walkers(using the UHF with the S-band subsystem).

The on-orbit Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem(ADACS) provides three axis pointing control for the satellite. The ADACS maintains system pointing by controlling torque in three mutually orthogonal wheels. The torque is determined by analysis of spacecraft orientation in space. Input to these computations are acquired from the Earth Sensor Assembly(ESA) for pitch and roll, and an inertial reference with sun sensor updates for yaw.

The Extravehicular Mobility Unit(EMU) consists of an integrated Space Suit Assembly(SSA) and Life Support Subsystem(LSS) with other crew items designed for Extravehicular Activity(EVA) outside the shuttle Space Transportation System(STS) orbiter or ISS. The NASA EMU provides life support functions, such as oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, a pressurized enclosure, temperature control and micrometeoroid protection, so astronauts can leave their shirtsleeve environment and work effectively in space.

OBS

Although the term space suit is sometimes used to designate the "extravehicular mobility unit" [EMU], "space suit" is, in fact, synonymous with "space suit assembly" which is a component of the EMU.
