CONT

Earthworm robots fall in the broader class of bio-mimicking robots. The thrust for developing earthworm-like robots lies in the ability of an earthworm to venture through highly space constrict regions taking lesser amount of space for navigation. The robots inspired by earthworm's locomotion characteristics are very useful in applications such as search and rescue operations under debris, surveillance and spying, inspection and maintenance in pipelines and medical uses like endoscopy...

CONT

Earthworm-like robots are typically composed of a series of identical and radially symmetric segments that are actuated in specific wave patterns for high velocity or low cost of transport locomotion and which enable directional control.

CONT

A principal sensor on board the satellite is the Space-Based Visible(SBV) sensor, a visible-band electro-optical camera designed... to perform the first technical and functional demonstration of space-based space surveillance. The principal task of the SBV sensor is to gather metric and photometric information on a variety of resident space objects(RSO).... Currently, the resident space object(RSO) catalog contains more than 8000 entries, consisting of active and inactive satellites, rocket bodies, and debris, with an active subset of over 800 objects.

CONT

We have created a catalog containing observations of over 1000 resident space objects (RSOs) by the infrared (IR) telescope on the Midcourse Space Experiment. These objects, a mix of satellites, rocket bodies, boosters, and debris, were serendipitously detected while the telescope was performing its primary mission.

Mission :Space surveillance is a critical part of USSPACECOM's mission and involves detecting, tracking, cataloging and identifying man-made objects orbiting Earth, i. e. active/inactive satellites, spent rocket bodies, or fragmentation debris. Space surveillance accomplishes the following : Predict when and where a decaying space object will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere; Prevent a returning space object, which to radar looks like a missile, from triggering a false alarm in missile-attack warning sensors of the U. S. and other countries; Chart the present position of space objects and plot their anticipated orbital paths; Detect new man-made objects in space; Produce a running catalog of man-made space objects; Determine which country owns a re-entering space object; Inform NASA whether or not objects may interfere with the space shuttle and Russian Mir space station orbits.

The ground-based electro-optical deep space surveillance system(GEODSS) is an optical system that uses a low-light-level TV camera, computers, and large telescopes. GEODSS tracks objects in deep space, or from about 3, 000 NM out to beyond geosynchronous altitudes. GEODSS requires nighttime and clear weather tracking because of the inherent limitations of an optical system.

CONT

The space environment which surrounds the Earth is becoming increasingly polluted with debris. Currently, the US Space Surveillance Network is using ground-based radar, optical and infrared sensors to track more than 7500 objects. The minimum size of a trackable object is about 10 cm for a low Earth orbit, and about 1 m for the geostationary orbit. Only about 6% of these catalogued objects are active satellites. Over 40% are fragments of disintegrated satellites and upper stages of rockets.
