DEF

An animal ... that obtains its food by filtering organic matter or minute organisms from a current of water that passes through some part of its system.

CONT

Filter feeders are a sub-group of suspension feeding animals that feed by straining suspended matter and food particles from water, typically by passing the water over a specialized filtering structure. Some animals that use this method of feeding are clams, krill, sponges, baleen whales, and many fish(including some sharks). Some birds, such as flamingos and certain species of duck, are also filter feeders.

DEF

An electrically conducting or semi-conducting nanofibre.

CONT

Two processes in nanotechnology by which nanowires can be manufactured are suspension and deposition. A suspended nanowire is held up by the ends in an evacuated chamber, and then is chemically etched or bombarded with high-speed atoms or molecules to reduce its diameter. Another method involves indenting the surface of a wire in the center of a suspended span, raising the temperature, and then stretching the wire while it is near its melting point. A deposited nanowire is fabricated on a surface consisting of some non-conducting substance such as plastic or glass. The process is similar to that by which semiconductor chips are grown, except that the result is a linear(one-dimensional) structure rather than a flat(two-dimensional) or solid(three-dimensional) structure.

CONT

A nanometer-scale wire [is] made of metal atoms, silicon, or other materials that conduct electricity. Nanowires are built atom by atom on a solid surface, often as part of a microfluidic device. They can be coated with molecules such as antibodies that will bind to proteins and other substances of interest to researchers and clinicians. By the very nature of their nanoscale size, nanowires are incredibly sensitive to such binding events and respond by altering the electrical current flowing through them, and thus can form the basis of ultra sensitive molecular detectors.

OBS

[It is an] extremely thin wire with a diameter on the order of a few nanometers (nm) or less, where 1 nm = 10-9 meter.

OBS

DEF

Nanofibre électriquement conductrice ou semi-conductrice.

CONT

DEF

initial force: A force peak resulting from the completion of that portion of a parachute canopy inflation process wherein the canopy fills from the skirt to the vent.

OBS

Under normal loading conditions, this is not the maximum opening force for a solid flat circular canopy, but is the maximum for canopies of the extended-skirt and geometric-porosity type.

CONT

Reefing assembly for a circular parachute : A reefing assembly for a circular parachute having a canopy including a skirt portion, and suspension lines attached to the skirt portion. The assembly includes a tension structure bounding a central opening and having a plurality of straight segments. A plurality of cords, each cord having two ends, are each fixed to one end of one of the tension structure straight segments to define a loop, and a plurality of rings slidably disposed on each of the loops. Each of the rings is slidably connected to at least one of the suspension lines. The rings are clustered together at a central portion of their respective loops, and upon deployment of the canopy, slide along their respective loops to become substantially equidistantly disposed on their respective loops. The assembly facilitates a restrained opening of the canopy and thereby reduces opening shock load.

OBS

There are two variations... [of the maglev]... The so-called repulsion-mode electrodynamic system, proposed by Powell and Danby... [and] the attraction-mode electromagnetic system [developed in Germany]. [In this system] conventional(nonsuperconducting) iron-core electromagnets carried by the vehicle are attracted upward toward ferromagnetic components attached to the underside of the guideway structure. This type of magnetic suspension is inherently unstable and needs precise control to maintain a clearance of about l. 5 centimeters between the vehicle's magnets and the guideway. One advantage, however, is that the vehicle remains levitated even when motionless and thus could be used for urban and commuter transit as well as for longer, high-speed routes.

OBS

CONT

Starch is supplied as a white, granular powder which is insoluble in cold water because of the polymeric structure and hydrogen bonding between adjacent chains. However, when an aqueous suspension is heated, the water is able to penetrate the granules and causes them to swell, producing a "gelatinized" solution or paste, depending on the concentration. Cooling this hot solution causes thickening, which is called "setback".

CONT
