English

Subject field(s)
  • Muscles and Tendons
DEF

Often associated with gluteus medius tendinitis, this condition is characterised by an inflammation of the bursae overlying the greater trochanter of the femur, most commonly the large multilocular bursa that lies between the gluteus medius and the tensor fascia latae. It is an overuse injury, predominantly seen in runners. Pain is often reproduced on stretch(hip flexion to 90 degrees with full lateral rotation of the hip) or contraction of the gluteus medius(resisted abduction of the hip).

CONT

Tendinitis of the knee occurs in the front of the knee below the kneecap at the patellar tendon(patellar tendinitis), or in the back of the knee at the popliteal tendon(popliteal tendinitis). Tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendon, which is often produced by a strong event, such as jumping. Patellar tendinitis, therefore, also has the name "jumper's knee".

Record 7 1996-06-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Bones and Joints
CONT

Tendinitis of the rotator cuff is the major cause of a painful shoulder. Of the tendons forming the rotator cuff, the supraspinatus tendon is most often affected, probably because of its repeated impingement between the acromion and humeral head as well as its reduced blood supply occurring with abduction of the arm.

OBS

Musculus supraspinatus ... A muscle of the scapula that arises from the medial two thirds of the supraspinous fossa of the scapula and the supraspinous fascia. It is inserted onto the highest of three facets on the greater tubercle of the humerus ... it helps to initiate abduction of the arm and helps to steady the head of the humerous and to prevent downward sliding in the glenoid cavity ...

CONT

Rotator cuff tendinitis : comparison of subacromial injection of a long acting corticosteroid versus oral indomethacin therapy.(In Journal of Rheumatology, 1986, 13(3) 608-613, cited in PASCAL data bank.)

OBS

Although the rotator cuff refers generically to a collection of four muscles of the shoulder, it is specifically the supraspinatus that most commonly is involved in tendinitis, probably owing to the constant stress resulting from humeral impingement against the coracoacromial arch.
