El término gen noqueado, del término inglés "knock-out gene", hace referencia al proceso de anulación de la expresión de un gen específico en un animal con el fin de estudiar las consecuencias a que da lugar la falta de la proteína correspondiente a ese gen. [...] Referirnos a esta técnica como del 'gen noqueado', traducción literal de la expresión inglesa, no es adecuado en español. Noquear, que curiosamente es una castellanización del término inglés knock out, es un término perteneciente al ámbito popular y pugilístico y que significa vencer a un adversario haciéndole perder el conocimiento; noquear tiene además un sentido de transitoriedad (la pérdida de conocimiento es temporal), lo que podría inducir la falsa idea de que los genes anulados lo son sólo transitoriamente. Cuando queramos referirnos a ratones manipulados mediante esta técnica es mejor escribir "ratones con un gen desactivado", "ratones con un gen no funcional", "ratones con un gen anulado", "ratón con los dos alelos silenciados", etcétera.

The therapeutic use of bacteriophages to treat pathogenic bacterial infections.

Bacteriophages are much more specific than antibiotics, so they can hypothetically be chosen to be indirectly harmless not only to the host organism (human, animal, or plant), but also to other beneficial bacteria, such as gut flora, reducing the chances of opportunistic infections. They would have a high therapeutic index, that is, phage therapy would be expected to give rise to few side effects. Because phages replicate in vivo, a smaller effective dose can be used. On the other hand, this specificity is also a disadvantage: a phage will only kill a bacterium if it is a match to the specific strain. Consequently phage mixtures are often applied to improve the chances of success, or samples can be taken and an appropriate phage identified and grown.

Benzatropine is an anticholinergic medication used for treating Parkinsons illness and related conditions such as parkinsonism, dystonia, and akathasia. Its effects have been shown to have an effective and significant therapeutic value in the management of the symptoms of parkinsonism. It counteracts the effects of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and balances the levels of acetylcholine and dopamine in the body, which may help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's illness in its early stages. It can also be used to treat movement disorders resulting from the use of other antipsychotic medication. Aside from its anticholinergic effect, doctors have also observed an antihistaminic activity approaching that of pyrilamine maleate.
