Noise-induced hearing loss(NIHL) occurs when structures in the inner ear become damaged due to loud noises. Most of the time, the sounds in our everyday environment... are at a safe level. There are times, however, when sounds become too loud or last for too long. This can lead to noise-induced hearing loss. 4, record 1, English, - noise%2Dinduced%20hearing%20loss

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense. 1, record 2, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin

Selfish genes are parasitic sequences of DNA that increase their own frequency in a population, usually to the detriment of the organisms that carry them. Although most genes can prosper only by contributing to the well-being of their bearers, there are certain times in the life cycle of an organism when genetic elements can potentially cheat and gain a transmission advantage.... Some genes cheat by inserting extra copies of themselves into cells; some cripple or obliterate their genetic counterparts on other chromosomes. A few can even change the sex of their host so that it produces only eggs or sperm favorable to the gene's distribution. Virtually all species, including humans, harbor at least some selfish genes. 1, record 5, English, - selfish%20gene

Irregularity in the diffusion of solute molecules that occurs in a porous chromatographic support, by the rapid process of mixing of the swirling eddies of the fluid. The phenomenon is due to the fact that (a) the pathlength for some solute molecules is either shorter or longer than that for the bulk of the molecules; and (b) the rate of solvent flow varies in different regions of the porous support. 2, record 6, English, - Eddy%20diffusion
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Non-ideal flow occurs when different elements of substrate move through the reactor at varying rates such that they are in contact with the enzyme for variable periods owing to their differing residence times in the reactor giving an opportunity for different extents of reaction to take place and for further reaction of the desired product and side-reactions to take place. Non-ideal flow can be caused by factors such as back-mixing, channelling, or the presence of stagnant flow regions within the reactors.... Eddy diffusion also causes inhomogeneous distribution of fluid. This effect occurs when there are variations in the size and shape of the support particles and because of the tendency of the larger particles to become packed close to the walls of the column such that the flow rate varies over the cross-section of the column. 3, record 6, English, - Eddy%20diffusion

Radiant frosts occur when large amounts of clear, dry air moves into an area and there is almost no cloud cover at night. During these times, the plants, soil, and other objects which are warmer than the very cold night sky will "radiate" their own heat back to space and become progressively colder. In fact, the plants cool(by radiating their heat) themselves to the point that they can cause their own damage. The plant tissues which are directly exposed to the sky become the coldest. These radiation losses can cause the buds, blossoms, twigs, leaves, etc. to become 1-2°C colder than the surrounding air which radiates very little of its heat.... The amount of heat lost to wind drift is often at least equal to radiative heat losses that are in the range of 10 to 30 watts per square meter(W/m2) or more. Consequently, the replacement heat must be greater than the sum of both radiative and advective heat losses during "successful" frost protection activities... 1, record 10, English, - radiative%20heat%20loss

Changing colors. The SCO OpenServer Graphical Environment provides a large color database from which you can select colors. In most cases, you should use the scocolor palette editor to make these color changes. However, there are times when you will need to make a specific color designation using resources. 1, record 13, English, - color%20designation

If an investor seeks to maximize the rate of income return, he usually has to give up some safety because he will have to purchase bonds or preferred shares with lower investment ratings. We say "usually" because there are times when the informed investor with access to accurate and current information may be able to obtain bargains. 2, record 14, English, - informed%20investor

3, record 14, French, - investisseur%20inform%C3%A9
