CONT

A functional term consists of a function constant and an arbitrary number of argument terms, terminated by an optional sequence variable. Note that there is no syntactic restriction on the number of argument terms-the same function constant can be applied to different numbers of arguments; arity restrictions in KIF are treated semantically.

CONT

DEF

(...) the use of armed force by a State against the sovereignty, territorial integrity or political independence of another State, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Charter of the United Nations (...)

CONT

The level of latent aggression may, however, play a larger role in determining the reaction to some more limited provocation.

OBS

It was the deliberations of [the third Special Committee] that finally achieved a definition acceptable to the international community as a whole and it was adopted without vote by the [General Assembly] in December, 1974.

OBS

A term fundamental to international argument, which, since the First World War, has come to replace the idea of an "offensive" act. All attempts to arrive at a definition are motivated by the desire to outlaw aggressive war, under the supposition that if there were no aggressors, but only states for "self-defense", then there would be no wars. Aggression is, therefore, the initiating act expressive of an intention to fight.

DEF

PHR

CONT

Most of the benefits of foreign investment are economic in nature.... There is no strong "noneconomic" or social argument for foreign ownership or control as an ethical end in itself.... the economic argument for continuing to permit, or encourage, foreign ownership is that infusions of capital from abroad raise the productivity of Canadian labor. In this way they raise GNP, and make it possible for the population to grow without diminishing returns.

... We would make the distinction between live metaphors and dead ones. The latter are of no interest for our present purpose : for instance, there is no need to translate "river mouth" by "les bouches du fleuve" rather than "l'estuaire". The argument for including live metaphors on the other hand is that they add information : this is based on the idea that metaphors are derived from similes and that similes make comparisons....
