In contrast to other fluorescence techniques, the parameter of primary interest is not the emission intensity itself, but rather spontaneous intensity fluctuations caused by the minute deviations of the small system from thermal equilibrium.... ASTER(Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) is an imaging instrument that is flying on Terra, a satellite launched in December 1999 as part of NASA's Earth Observing System(EOS). Techniques were developed which enabled the analysis of plastic deformation mechanism from the change of the slope of the deformation curve at a fixed time, when the physical state of the material is changed. This relates to SN transitions for superconductive materials, to change of electronic state in illuminated semiconductors or ionic crystals, leading to photoplastic effect, and to pulse loading(stress-jump) and pulse heating(temperature-jump) methods, developed and used for thermal activation analysis of plastic deformation.

Kaye adapted a Beckman far-ultraviolet DK-2 spectrophotometer as a gas chromatographic effluent detector to record the spectra of eluted, absorbing materials. Using heated flow-through cells... coupled directly to the thermal conductivity cell' s outlet, he found that absorptivities of most organic vapors were sufficiently large to permit quantitative analysis, and in some instances identification, where specific absorption patterns could be attributed directly to a functional group in certain molecular species. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the far-ultraviolet detector for many compounds possessing intense absorption bands exceeds that of the normal thermal conductivity detector and, in some cases, the hydrogen flame ionization detector.
