... noise has its most deleterious effect on reception quality when it occurs in the input circuitry of the receiver, since this is usually where the basic signal-to-noise ratio is established. The generation of noise in this area is principally caused by thermal agitation in resistive input components. When the incoming signal is too weak to override this noise, a visual effect is displayed on the picture tube that is commonly referred to as snow. Although there are other types of noise that produce different visual effects, snow is the most common visual effect. 3, record 7, English, - snow

Cooling is one of the most important technical challenges facing many diverse industries... The conventional method for increasing heat dissipation is to increase the area available for exchanging heat with a heat transfer fluid. However, this approach requires an undesirable increase in the thermal management system's size... Cork Insulation. Cork is the outer bark of an oak tree that flourishes only in the area surrounding the western Mediterranean Sea. Instead of being fibrous in structure, the bark of the cork oak is composed of tiny cells, so small that there are 200 million of them to every cubic inch of cork bark. These tiny cells give cork a high resistance to the passage of heat. Each cell is filled with still air, and next to a vacuum, still air is the best insulation known. Because the cells are so tiny, no convection currents in the air can be established to reduce its insulation properties. The cellular structure gives the material its high degree of natural moisture resistance. Each tiny cork cell is a perfect geometric shape, having 14 sides. The volume of cork includes more than 75% air. Its thermal conductivity is 0. 26 Btu per square foot per hour per degree temperature difference at 60 degrees F.(metric), and 0. 30 Btu per square foot per degree temperature difference at 180 degrees F(metric). 2, record 12, English, - cork%20insulation

The Boltzmann equation, also often known as the Boltzmann transport equation, devised by Ludwig Boltzmann, describes the statistical distribution of one particle in a fluid. It is one of the most important equations of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the area of statistical mechanics that deals with systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium; for instance, when there is an applied temperature gradient or electric field. The Boltzmann equation is used to study how a fluid transports physical quantities such as heat and charge, and thus to derive transport properties such as electrical conductivity, Hall conductivity, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. 1, record 15, English, - Boltzmann%20equation

1, record 15, French, - %C3%A9quation%20de%20Boltzmann

Thermal lift is created by areas of warm air rising from the land. As the land heats up with the warmth of the sun, the air above it will begin to warm by the heat radiating from the land. This is especially true over terrain such as a freshly plowed field or a paved parking area. As the air heats, it will begin to rise and allow cooler air to move in to replace it. This air, in turn, will heat up, rise, and you will get a continuous current of rising air. As long as the air is rising at a rate greater than a glider sinks while in flight, the glider can sustain lift. 4, record 18, English, - thermal%20ascent

Remote Sensing is the science and art of acquiring information(spectral, spatial, temporal) about material objects, area, or phenomenon, without coming into physical contact with the objects, or area, or phenomenon under investigation.... In remote sensing, information transfer is accomplished by use of electromagnetic radiation(EMR). EMR is a form of energy that reveals its presence by the observable effects it produces when it strikes the matter.... Types [of remote sensing] in respect to the type of energy resources. Passive remote sensing makes use of sensors that detect the reflected or emitted electro-magnetic radiation from natural sources. Active remote sensing makes use of sensors that detect reflected responses from objects that are irradiated from artificially-generated energy sources, such as radar.... In respect to wavelength regions, remote sensing is categorized as follows : visible and reflective infrared remote sensing, thermal infrared remote sensing and microwave remote sensing. 6, record 20, English, - electromagnetic%20remote%20sensing

The thermal platform or "Cold Plate" as it is more popularly called, is used in environmental testing. A flat conductive surface is contrived to have its temperature precisely controllable over a wide range. The temperature of small items placed on or clamped to the platform will quite closely approximate the known temperature of the platform. The degree of exactness will depend primarily on the area of contact and the conductivity characteristics of the specimen. The use of a cold plate allows certain types of devices to be tested or processed at any desired temperature while remaining accessible for adjustment, probe contact, visual examination, etc. The function is similar to that of a temperature chamber but faster and for many applications, more convenient. 1, record 22, English, - cold%20plate

Solar Thermal Propulsion(STP)... uses large area deployable concentrators to focus the Sun's energy on a small heat exchanger, called an absorber, which is cooled by hydrogen gas propellant. The absorber transfers the concentrated heat energy from the Sun to the hydrogen gas. As the gas is heated, it expands and is directed outward through a nozzle. This expanding gas provides enough thrust in the microgravity environment of low earth orbit to transfer the vehicle to a higher energy, geosynchronous orbit around the Earth where the satellite operates. 2, record 23, English, - solar%20thermal%20propulsion

The total emissive power... is the total thermal radiation energy emitted by a surface element into the entire volume above the surface per unit time per unit area(emissive power, radiant flux density).... In the study of real surfaces it is convenient to define an ideal surface. The ideal surface is called a black surface or a black body, where all energy incident upon the body is absorbed, regardless of direction, wavelength or any often identifiable energy characteristic. Since, all energy is absorbed a=1, r=0, t=0. A perfect absorber is also a perfect emitter. So, the emissive power of a black body is only a function of temperature. 1, record 25, English, - total%20emissive%20power

Remote heat sensing techniques evolved from space technology developments related to weather satellites can be used to detect comparative heat energy losses from roofs, walls, windows, and so on. A method called thermography is defined as the conversion of a temperature pattern detected on a surface by contrast into an image called a thermogram... Thermovision is defined as the technique of utilizing the infrared radiation from a surface which varies with the surface temperatures, to produce a thermal picture or thermogram. Dispersion theory.... Turbulent motion is one of the most fundamental atmospheric properties which causes diffusion of air pollutants.... The basic sets of parameters affecting diffusion can be classified as meteorological, topographical and source characteristics. The first two, which include wind speed, wind direction and thermal stability, are mutually dependent. The latter set depends on source type, height and emission rate.... The distinction between point and area sources depends on the scale of the problem under examination. For a global pollution problem, the city, as a source of pollution, could be approximated to a point source rather than an area source. 1, record 37, English, - dispersion%20theory
