2, record 7, French, - r%C3%A9acteur%20%C3%A0%20haute%20temp%C3%A9rature%20refroidi%20par%20gaz

Cedar shakes are the ideal roofing material for many areas of the Western United States. A wood roof keeps your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. A Meeker shake roof can endure 130 mph winds. In the winter, a Meeker cedar roof will effectively shed snow and ice. Cedar shakes are resistive to thermal shock associated with freeze-thaw conditions. Critical conditions for the infinite and finite reflected, externally-moderated, gaseous-core, spherical reactor are derived analytically from two-region one-group diffusion theory. The source of thermal neutrons is determined from Fermi age theory. The critical conditions so obtained are quite complicated and difficult to evaluate by hand calculations. They are programmed for the IBM 1620 computer and critical masses for a pure U235-D2O reactor are computed for a reasonable range of core radii and moderator-reflector thicknesses. It is shown that for a gaseous-core reactor, two-group diffusion theory gives the identical results as one-group diffusion theory, and that the one-group results are in close agreement with multi-group results presented in the literature. 1, record 27, English, - one%2Dgroup%20diffusion%20theory

The coated particle fuels have been designed in the past for "high temperature reactors"(HTR). The interesting aspects of such fuel are :(i) the good thermal exchange between the gas coolant and the fuel as a result of the small fuel particles, and(ii) the retention of the fission products within the particle as a result of the tight coatings surrounding the fissile kernel flux conditions. 1, record 28, English, - coated%20particle%20fuel

There is a strong consensus that projected changes in climate could result in longer and warmer frost-free periods across Canada and, thereby, generally enhance thermal regimes for commercial agriculture. These changes in agro-climatic conditions are not expected to impact regions on an equal basis, with the longest extensions of the frost-free season expected in Atlantic Canada. The extent to which these longer and warmer frost-free seasons might benefit Canada, however, will in all likelihood be diminished by less soil moisture in all regions and under all climate change projection. Hence, it is crucial that all assessments of the implications of climatic change for Canadian agriculture take account of the possibility of both negative and positive impacts on agro-climatic properties. 2, record 29, English, - agroclimatic%20conditions

The Earth's upper atmosphere, beginning only 10-15 km above the surface, remains a frontier largely unexplored from space. The goal of upper atmosphere research is to understand the chemistry, dynamics, and energy balance above the troposphere as well as the coupling between these processes and between atmosphere regions. This implies an understanding of the mechanisms that control upper atmosphere structure and variability, as well as an understanding of how the upper atmosphere responds to natural and man-made causes. Together, these will help define the role of the upper atmosphere in climate and climate variability. The UARS [Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite] platform provides simultaneous, coordinated measurements of atmospheric internal structure(trace constituents, physical dynamics, radiative emission, thermal structure, density) and measurements of the external influences acting upon the upper atmosphere(solar radiation, tropospheric conditions, electric fields). 2, record 38, English, - Earth%27s%20upper%20atmosphere

Among the classes of mass-transport phenomena in liquids, thermal diffusion(the Soret effect) is... characterized by the existence of a spontaneous matter flux in an inhomogeneously heated fluid mixture, this flux tending to separate the constituents.... From a more industrial point of view, whenever multiconstituent liquids are submitted to long-lasting temperature gradients, they are liable to experience thermal diffusive flows, modifying the distribution of the species concentration. Among the cases where this effect has been emphasized, we can mention the elaboration of high technology materials(solidification of semiconductors), the production or purification of light metals... and the optimization of petroleum extraction(by modelling of the hydrocarbon distribution in the reservoirs). So, knowledge of quantitative values of the Soret coefficient(which is the parameter characteristic of the phenomenon) for a wide domain of materials, in various thermodynamic conditions and physical configurations is needed for the above-mentioned basic and applied purposes.... The experimental determination of Soret coefficients in binary mixtures, denoted ST, is obtained by measuring the steady concentration gradient produced by the imposition of a constant and uniform temperature gradient. This concentration gradient achieves a stationary state when thermal diffusion and interdiffusion(which tends to rehomogenize the mixture) exactly compensate each other. 1, record 47, English, - Soret%20coefficient

The new 60-megawatt segmented arc heater, known as H3, significantly improves AEDC' s [Arnold Engineering Development Center] present arc capabilities... Arc heaters such as H3 produce the high pressures and heat fluxes required for testing thermal protection materials used for nose tips and heat shields. Arc heater tests provide information to manufacturers about the probable condition a space vehicle component would experience following re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. An arc heater is basically a large tube that high-pressure air runs through. The air is heated by discharging tens of megawatts of power using an electric arc similar to a lightning bolt. At the nozzle, or downstream end of the heater, test personnel install models or materials and subject them to simulated high pressure and temperature conditions generated by the bolt. Temperatures range from 5, 000 to 15, 000 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring each component to be water-cooled. 2, record 50, English, - segmented%20arc%20heater

Up until now the envelope equations have been written for a laterally unbounded system. The presence of side boundaries that confine the system can modify the instability mechanism. For example, in convection, viscous friction at a lateral wall increases the damping, which inhibits the instability. By contrast, a thermal perturbation in the wall or simply a difference of thermal conductivity between the fluid and the wall, can build up a horizontal temperature gradient that may induce a fluid motion, thus encouraging the instability. In both cases, we expect lateral boundary effects to impose modulations and act as boundary conditions on the envelope. 1, record 65, English, - lateral%20boundary%20effect

1, record 65, French, - effet%20de%20paroi%20lat%C3%A9rale
