Matrix effects can be divided into two kinds, physical and chemical. Physical matrix effects depend on the physical properties of the sample and generally relate to the ablation step of LIBS [laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy]. That is, differences between the specific heat, latent heat of vaporization, thermal conductivity, absorption, etc., of different matrices can change the amount of an element ablated from one matrix compared with another matrix even though the properties of the ablation laser pulse remain constant. 2, record 1, English, - physical%20matrix%20effect

Cork Insulation. Cork is the outer bark of an oak tree that flourishes only in the area surrounding the western Mediterranean Sea. Instead of being fibrous in structure, the bark of the cork oak is composed of tiny cells, so small that there are 200 million of them to every cubic inch of cork bark. These tiny cells give cork a high resistance to the passage of heat. Each cell is filled with still air, and next to a vacuum, still air is the best insulation known. Because the cells are so tiny, no convection currents in the air can be established to reduce its insulation properties. The cellular structure gives the material its high degree of natural moisture resistance. Each tiny cork cell is a perfect geometric shape, having 14 sides. The volume of cork includes more than 75% air. Its thermal conductivity is 0. 26 Btu per square foot per hour per degree temperature difference at 60 degrees F.(metric), and 0. 30 Btu per square foot per degree temperature difference at 180 degrees F(metric). 2, record 21, English, - cork%20insulation

In contrast to the automatic recording instruments monitoring volume increases at constant pressure, van de Craats maintained the volume constant and recorded automatically the pressure changes by means of an electromagnetic manometer devised by Kinkel.... In addition to van de Craats’ work with pressure-sensing devices, Novák and Janák constructed a detector which represents the pneumatic analog of a Wheatstone bridge, employing the dynamic effects of pneumatic obstructions such as capillaries and constrictions for determining component fractions emerging from the gas chromatographic column. Requiring no electrical power yet having an accuracy comparable to high precision thermal conductivity cells, it expresses the pressure differential, either differentially or integrally, caused by the eluted component as a diagonal from zero. Furthermore, the substance analyzed is never in contact with the detector. 1, record 24, English, - pressure%20detector

The Boltzmann equation, also often known as the Boltzmann transport equation, devised by Ludwig Boltzmann, describes the statistical distribution of one particle in a fluid. It is one of the most important equations of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the area of statistical mechanics that deals with systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium; for instance, when there is an applied temperature gradient or electric field. The Boltzmann equation is used to study how a fluid transports physical quantities such as heat and charge, and thus to derive transport properties such as electrical conductivity, Hall conductivity, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. 1, record 28, English, - Boltzmann%20equation

The thermal platform or "Cold Plate" as it is more popularly called, is used in environmental testing. A flat conductive surface is contrived to have its temperature precisely controllable over a wide range. The temperature of small items placed on or clamped to the platform will quite closely approximate the known temperature of the platform. The degree of exactness will depend primarily on the area of contact and the conductivity characteristics of the specimen. The use of a cold plate allows certain types of devices to be tested or processed at any desired temperature while remaining accessible for adjustment, probe contact, visual examination, etc. The function is similar to that of a temperature chamber but faster and for many applications, more convenient. 1, record 32, English, - cold%20plate

A transport property of a substance is its ability to transfer matter, energy, or some other specified property from one place to another. For example, molecules(in gases, liquids, and solids) diffuse down a concentration gradient until the composition is uniform, and the rate of this diffusion is a transport property. The rate of thermal conduction, the transport of energy down a temperature gradient, is another transport property characteristic of the substance and its state. Electric conduction is the transport of charge(by ions or electrons) in a potential gradient, and the electric conductivity of the substance is a transport property. Viscosity... is a measure of the rate at which linear momentum is transported through a fluid, and hence is another transport property. 2, record 36, English, - transport%20property

Superfluid Helium What Is It? As the temperature of helium gas is lowered to approximately 5.2°K, a phase transition to ordinary liquid helium (He I) takes place. The latter is unremarkable and its behavior is identical to any other liquid. As temperature is lowered further (at moderate pressures) helium does not solidify. Rather, it undergoes a phase change to a second liquid phase He II at temperature of about 2.17°K. ... the He II phase persists all the way to absolute zero. ... The He II phase is referred to as superfluid helium because of its remarkable properties, including the ability to flow through microscopic passages [holes as small as 10-7 centimeters in diameter] with no apparent friction; the quantization of vortices; and the ability to support four wave modes: first sound which is analogous to sound in ordinary gases and liquids, second sound which carries temperature and entropy perturbations with virtually no pressure variations, third sound which are waves on thin films, and fourth sound which are acoustic-like waves in the "superfluid" component of He II. 5, record 39, English, - helium%20II

The problem of severe baseline drift associated with column bleed at higher temperatures during temperature programming operations was satisfactorily eliminated by Emery and Koerner, who developed a dual-column, programmed-temperature chromatograph, extending the upper usable temperature limits for column packings. This was accomplished by programming the temperature of two symmetrical columns, the effluent of the "dummy" column passing through the reference side of a four-filament, hot-wire thermal conductivity cell compensating for the "bleed" of analytical column. 2, record 49, English, - analytical%20column

Normally, a blow-molded part is cooled externally by the mold cavity, forcing heat to travel through the entire wall thickness. With the poor thermal conductivity of plastic resins, molding cycle times of heavy parts can be considerable. Internal cooling systems are designed to speed the mold cooling time, thus reducing costs by removing some of this heat from the inside. Several systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches : liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods. 1, record 52, English, - internal%20cooling%20system

Using heated flow-through cells... coupled directly to the thermal conductivity cell' s outlet, he found that absorptivities of most organic vapors were sufficiently large to permit quantitative analysis, and in some instances identification, where specific absorption patterns could be attributed directly to a functional group in certain molecular species. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the far-ultraviolet detector for many compounds possessing intense absorption bands exceeds that of the normal thermal conductivity detector and, in some cases, the hydrogen flame ionization detector. 1, record 56, English, - ultraviolet%20spectrophotometer%20detector

Up until now the envelope equations have been written for a laterally unbounded system. The presence of side boundaries that confine the system can modify the instability mechanism. For example, in convection, viscous friction at a lateral wall increases the damping, which inhibits the instability. By contrast, a thermal perturbation in the wall or simply a difference of thermal conductivity between the fluid and the wall, can build up a horizontal temperature gradient that may induce a fluid motion, thus encouraging the instability. In both cases, we expect lateral boundary effects to impose modulations and act as boundary conditions on the envelope. 1, record 61, English, - lateral%20boundary%20effect

1, record 61, French, - effet%20de%20paroi%20lat%C3%A9rale

The high alumina(Al2O3 75-99 percent) ceramics have very good mechanical characteristics at room temperature and elevated temperatures. They also have good dielectric loss properties which persist at low and high frequencies. They can be used at low and high temperatures and have high resistivity, high thermal conductivity, and good thermal shock properties. High-alumina ceramic is one of the best all-around insulations available. It is produced commercially in compositions of up to 99 percent alumina. It has permanent dimensional stability, extreme hardness, chemical inertness, high strength, high impact resistance, vacuum-tightness, high operating temperature, and relatively high thermal conductivity. 1, record 65, English, - high%2Dalumina%20ceramic
