The SIHS [Soldier's Integrated Headwear System] headborne system should be designed with warfighting in mind; predominantly for high tempo operations... The highest priority system capability for the headborne system is protection. Chief among these is protection against high and low velocity fragments [and] blast... Similarly, blast and impulse noise injury to the ears has been identified as important from both a protection and a command and control perspective. The future headborne system also needs to integrate CB [chemical and biological] protection for skin and respiration [and needs to include GPS [global positioning system] and radio antennae on the helmet, as well as any combat [identification] detector technology. For camouflage,... temperate and hot environments [are] important and... any future system [needs] to manage light, noise and thermal emissions to avoid detection by the enemy.... Compatibility with weapons, CB protective equipment, and corrective vision spectacles were seen to be essential for the dismounted rifleman role.

Hydraulic blocking valves are commonly employed in flight power control actuators to prevent surface motion in the event of a loss of a hydraulic system. Since the function of a blocking valve is to trap hydraulic fluid in the actuator, pressure build-up will occur with external loads and/or thermal effects, and so a pressure relief function is required.

CONT

The RADARSAT-2 satellite ... consists of a Bus Module and a Payload Module [...] The RADARSAT-2 bus consists of elements that provide general support functions such as ... thermal control ...

OBS

The thermal control subsystem is a key system on which the successful performance of the spacecraft ultimately depends. Electronics equipment must operate within a relatively narrow temperature band if proper functioning is to be achieved and thermal failure avoided. This operating temperature range must be maintained in a vehicle that will be exposed to extreme temperature gradients. Heat generated internally must also be managed. Typically, satellites will spin to keep any part of the surface from getting too hot or cold.

DEF

This material consists of alternate layers of godized Kapton, Dacron scrim cloth and a Beta cloth outer covering. In extreme cold conditions, thermostatically controlled electric heaters(resistance elements) attached to critical mechanical and electronic hardware can be powered on to maintain a stable operating temperature.

The PVR [Photovoltaic Radiator] is a critical component of the space station's thermal control system. It will cool the photovoltaic power system electronic equipment and the batteries used for power storage. The PVR will also provide environmental cooling for the service module during early phases of the space station. Each PVR Orbital Replacement Unit(ORU) consists of 7 radiator panels, each about 6 feet by 12 feet in size. The radiator panels are designed to deploy on orbit from a stowed position about 2 feet high to an extended position about 50 feet in length. Each ORU weighs about 1, 600 pounds, with a total of 4 units in the final space station configuration.

Thermal radiators are positioned on the Integrated Truss Structure. These radiators are oriented using rotary joints to keep them parallel to the Sun's rays so as to keep them from receiving external heat inputs, and to keep them oriented toward space to allow radiation of heat.... the radiators pick up heat from the ISS [International Space Station] through the environmental control system, which then transfers that heat to the radiators...

CONT

Thermal radiators are used to radiate the excess thermal energy generated by operation of the ISS [International Space Station] into space, in order to maintain a suitable on-board working environment.

The Habitat Holding Rack(HHR) is a host system that accommodates SSBRP [Space Station Biological Research Project] subrack payloads(that is, habitats) that house biological specimens(e. g. rodent, plant, insect, aquatic, egg, cell and tissue culture, etc.) in a low-acceleration environment on the International Space Station(ISS). The HHR provides the functional support services required by each subrack payload, including structural, mechanical, power, thermal conditioning, data, video, and command and control functions. The HHR also provides a passive vibration control system to protect the payloads from International Space Station(ISS) vibration.
