An improved technology in utilizing solar energy for drying grain is the use of solar driers where the air is heated in a solar collector and then passed through beds of grain. There are two basic types of solar drier appropriate for use with grain : natural convection driers where the air flow is induced by thermal gradients; and forced convection driers wherein air is forced through a solar collector and the grain bed by a fan. 2, record 1, English, - solar%20dryer

Cork Insulation. Cork is the outer bark of an oak tree that flourishes only in the area surrounding the western Mediterranean Sea. Instead of being fibrous in structure, the bark of the cork oak is composed of tiny cells, so small that there are 200 million of them to every cubic inch of cork bark. These tiny cells give cork a high resistance to the passage of heat. Each cell is filled with still air, and next to a vacuum, still air is the best insulation known. Because the cells are so tiny, no convection currents in the air can be established to reduce its insulation properties. The cellular structure gives the material its high degree of natural moisture resistance. Each tiny cork cell is a perfect geometric shape, having 14 sides. The volume of cork includes more than 75% air. Its thermal conductivity is 0. 26 Btu per square foot per hour per degree temperature difference at 60 degrees F.(metric), and 0. 30 Btu per square foot per degree temperature difference at 180 degrees F(metric). 2, record 3, English, - cork%20insulation

Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Thermals are created by the uneven heating of the Earth's surface from solar radiation, and are an example of convection. The size and strength of thermals are influenced greatly by the properties of the lower atmosphere(the troposphere). The most important factor is the amount of atmospheric stability. Generally, when the atmosphere is less stable thermal formation is more likely. Thermals are often indicated by the presence of visible cumulus clouds. The rising air in a thermal cools as it ascends, until the water vapor in the air begins to condense into visible droplets. 5, record 7, English, - thermal

Looping plume... The up and down motion starts as soon as the gas issues from the stack and is caused by atmospheric, eddies, often the result of thermal convection. It is an optical illusion that any particular parcel of gas follows a sinuous path as it moves downwind; if it forms the top of a wave near the stack, it remains as the top of a wave as it moves downwind. It is the sinuosities that move with the wind, growing in size as they travel. Looping is seldom observed from stacks taller than lOOm. 3, record 11, English, - looping%20plume

1, record 11, French, - panache%20sinueux

Typical experiments for the Fluid Science Modules are experiments dealing with Marangoni convection or critical point phenomena. For example... Thermocapillary drop motion :... The following process was automated : creation of a linear thermal gradient by heating one wall of the cell and cooling the opposite one; injection of a series of drops in the cell. The drops were from 1 mm to 4 mm in diameter. The motion of the drops was filmed by a video-camera and observed and recorded in real time on the ground. 2, record 12, English, - thermocapillary%20drop%20motion

Among two-dimensional periodic patterns, the most famous is Benard's convective cell. This cell is formed as a result of thermal convection.... In a liquid layer heated from below there appear ascending and descending streams. As a result of these convective motions, a hexagonal structure resembling a honeycomb may appear. For many years this structure has served as an example of a wonderful phenomenon of self-organization in continuous media. 2, record 15, English, - self%2Dorganization

Up until now the envelope equations have been written for a laterally unbounded system. The presence of side boundaries that confine the system can modify the instability mechanism. For example, in convection, viscous friction at a lateral wall increases the damping, which inhibits the instability. By contrast, a thermal perturbation in the wall or simply a difference of thermal conductivity between the fluid and the wall, can build up a horizontal temperature gradient that may induce a fluid motion, thus encouraging the instability. In both cases, we expect lateral boundary effects to impose modulations and act as boundary conditions on the envelope. 1, record 16, English, - lateral%20boundary%20effect

1, record 16, French, - effet%20de%20paroi%20lat%C3%A9rale
