CONT

Several methods of welding exist. In all method, the thermoplastic material is joined by raising the temperature of the substrate to a level that melts the fabric at the interface of the two plies. Pressure applied in a controlled manner promotes the flow of one material into the other and upon cooling a weld bead is formed.

OBS

Welding techniques include hot air welding, hot wedge welding, dielectric welding and ultrasonic welding.

CONT

What is the difference between thermoplastic and thermoset insulation in electrical cables? The plastic or polymers used in cable insulation are either thermoplastic or thermoset.... Thermoset materials are... softened by heating and can be shaped and then cooled to retain a new shape; however, unlike thermoplastic material, it is only possible to do this once. This is due to a chemical reaction that has taken place during the polymerisation.

A mould in which the runners are kept at a temperature that is higher than the solidification temperature of the material.

CONT

Hot runner molds. Thermoplastic runners are reground and reused. A logical extension of the three-plate mold overcomes this and is called a hot runner mold. This mold has a hot runner plate, which is a block of steel heated with electric cartridges, thermostatically controlled. This keeps the plastic fluid. The material is received from the injection cylinder and is forced through the hot runner blocks into the cavities. It is a more difficult mold to build and operate than a three-plate mold, but produces parts less expensively on longer-running jobs.

DEF

The weight in grams of a thermoplastic material that can be forced through a standard orifice within a specified time.

CONT

The melt index (MI) test the flow rates of extrudable thermoplastics .... A specified amount of plastic is heated to a fixed temperature in a vertical cylinder. A piston loaded with a prescribed weight extrudes the plastics. Extruded samples are taken at intervals and weighed. The melt index (MI) of the plastic is reported as grams of material extruded in 10 minutes.

DEF

A printing plate made from any plastic which becomes soft in heating and sets again when cooled.

OBS

Thermoplastic material is capable of being heated and reformed after hardening and curing in contrast to thermosetting material which is relatively soft when received but becomes hard when heated and remains hard whether hot or cold. It is usual to make moulds from type or blocks using thermosetting material, e. g. bakelite, and from these moulds to make thermoplastic plates.

Polyaryl sulfone offers the unique combination of thermoplasticity and retention of structurally useful properties at 500°. This material is supplied in both pellet and powder form. Its thermoplastic nature allows it to be fabricated by injection molding or extrusion techniques on standard commercially available equipment. Polyaryl sulfone consists mainly of phenyl and biphenyl groups linked by thermally stable ether and sulfone groups. It is distinguished from polysulfone polymers by the absence of aliphatic groups, which are liable to oxidative attack. This aromatic structure gives it excellent resistance to oxidative degradation and accounts for its retention of mechanical properties at high temperatures.

CONT

Polyaryl sulfone. A strong, hard, stiff plastic which can be used from -400 to +500°F, this polymer is used mostly in aerospace applications. ... This plastic is often used to upgrade other plastic applications with respect to temperature and to replace metals and ceramics in valve bodies, hydraulic seals, and bearings.

CONT

Poly(aryl sulfone) was introduced in 1983 and is available from Amoco Performance Products under the trade names Radel A-100, A-200, and A-300. It is suitable for high technology applications, including such electrical/electronic parts as printed-circuit boards, snap-fit connectors, and lamp housings.

Hot melt sealing : In this sealing method, either a continuous strip or dots of molten thermoplastic material is applied between the two surfaces to be sealed, just before they are pressed together. The hot melt contains sufficient heat to cause it to adhere to the package members to be sealed together, and the package members have the heat absorbing capacity to chill the seal before pressure is relieved.

OBS

This method is useful where directly applied heat might damage the packaging materials to be sealed together, or where a second pressure-cooling step might otherwise be required. Hot melts can also supply special interfacial properties, such as peelability.

Magnetic sealing is used where heavy polyolefin package members are to be sealed. A gasket, shaped to fit between the sealing faces of the two package members, is made from the same thermoplastic as the package, but has milled into it an iron-containing compound that has a high hysteresis loss. The package portions are pressed together with the gasket between their sealing surfaces and placed in a magnetic field oscillating at a frequency high enough to melt the gasket. This in turn melts the sealing surfaces and causes them to weld together. As an alternative to a gasket, an iron-containing material can be preapplied to one or both of the sealing surfaces, producing the same result.

DEF

Geomembranes are manufactured from synthetic (thermoplastic) or bituminous products. Synthetic materials, mostly used in the Netherlands, are high density polyethylene ..., low density polyethylene ..., polyvinylchloride ..., ethylene copolymer bitumen (ECB), and chlorinated polyethylene ...

CONT

Ethylenecopolymer bitumen(ECB). ECB membranes have been developed basically for the roofing industry but are also applied in civil engineering as sealing materials. The raw materials used for ECB are ethylene and bytyl acrylate, together forming 50 to 60%, and a special bitumen, 40 to 50%. These materials are mixed in an extrusion process at a temperature of about 160 °C. The bitumen gives the material a thermoplastic character and also acts as a softener and a light stabilizer.

Solvent seams use a brushed liquid solvent between the two geomembrane sheets to be joined, followed by pressure to make complete contact. These seams are used primarily on thermoplastic materials. Bodied solvent seams are similar except that 8 to 12% of the parent lining material is dissolved in the solvent and then the seam is made. Pressure is necessary and the use of heat guns or radiant heaters aids the process. A solvent adhesive uses an adherent left after dissipation of the solvent. The adhesive thus becomes an additional element in the system.
