The single reed for the clarinet is made from a slip cut from the stem of "A. donax. "After being trimmed, the reed is flattened on the inner side, while the end of the rounded outer side is scraped down to a feather edge. The thick end of the reed is attached, flat side down, to the mouthpiece by a metal ligature or length of twine. In playing, the thin end of the reed vibrates, alternately closing and opening the space between the reed and the mouthpiece. The vibration carries through the wedged-shaped tone chamber in the mouthpiece and into the air column in the tube. 4, record 1, English, - single%20reed

A longwall cutter-loader of the plough type, with two cutting blades, one at each end, operated by a hydraulic cylinder which can give a powerful thrust(about 42 tons) to the blades and cause them to bite into the coal. While this thrust is being exerted, the machine is anchored by means of a vertical jack which engages the roof and floor. The jack is built on sliding bars and the machine is moved by sliding the jack along the bars to the next position for anchoring the machine. It travels alongside the conveyor but is not connected to it. A loading ramp guides the cut coal on to the conveyor. 1, record 22, French, - rabot%20automoteur%20Samson

Rapid plows. The Loebbehobel is a rapid plow which is equipped with three or four protruding picks or bits. The plow is double-ended and cuts as it traverses in each direction along the face. The machine normally travels at a speed of about 75 ft/min and takes a slice of coal 3-4 in. thick off the face at each pass. It is pulled to and fro by an endless chain which is driven by the gearheads at each end of the armored conveyor. Maximum pulling force is about 20 tons. This machine is capable of working in seams 1 ft 8 in. thick up to 7 ft thick and can produce, load, and deliver to a gate conveyor from 1. 5 to 5 tons/min. The plow works well in seams which are soft or are hard but friable but will not work well in coal which is "tough" or "woody". 1, record 29, English, - rapid%20plow
