  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

The product of moist, cohesive snow that when initiated by wind rolls across the landscape, gathering snow until it can no longer move.

CONT

A snow roller is a rare meteorological phenomenon in which large snowballs are formed naturally as chunks of snow are blown along the ground by wind, picking up material along the way, in much the same way that the large snowballs used in snowmen are made. Unlike snowballs made by people, snow rollers are typically cylindrical in shape, and are often hollow since the inner layers, which are the first layers to form, are weak and thin compared to the outer layers and can easily be blown away, leaving what looks like a doughnut or jelly roll. Snow rollers have been seen to grow as large as two feet in diameter.... snow rollers are more common in hilly areas. However, [they are] a very rare phenomenon.

OBS

It is shaped like a rolled sleeping bag, some reaching four feet across and seven feet in diameter.

Subject field(s)
  • Platemaking (Printing)
  • Flexography (Printing)
CONT

Recently, the so-called "flexo CTP(Computer to Plate) method" has been developed. In this method, a thin, light absorption layer called "Black layer" is formed on the surface of a photosensitive resin plate, and the resultant resin plate is irradiated with a laser to ablate(evaporate) desired portions of the black layer to form a mask bearing an image(formed by the unablated portions of the black layer) on the resin plate directly without separately perparing a mask. Subsequently, the resultant resin plate is imagewise exposed to light through the mask, to thereby crosslink the exposed portions of the resin, followed by developing treatment in which the unexposed portions of the resin(i. e., uncrosslinked resin portions) are washed away with a developing liquid.

CONT

With this process [direct laser imaging] the electronically-generated image is scanned at speed to a photopolymer plate material that carrys a thin black mask layer on the surface.

DEF

  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
CONT

Drip Irrigation.... Water is delivered in small quantities under low pressure directly to... the root zone of the plants. You’ll need 1/2 inch polyethylene header pipe, and a roll of thin tape-like porous tubing. The header pipe connects to a garden hose and routes water through the garden. The pipe is placed either down the center or along one end of the garden. Small puncture holes are then made with a screwdriver into the header pipe at intervals corresponding to garden row. Eight-to ten-inch pieces of rubber connecting hose are then inserted into these holes. The other end of the connecting hose attaches to a length of porous tape. This tape is rolled out along each vegetable bed and cut to the same length as the row. Then end of the tape is then crimped to prevent water loss when the system is in use. Porous irrigation tape is best placed about three to four inches away from the base of the plants.

Gaines perforées et poreuses ne sont utilisables qu'à de faibles pressions et ne peuvent convenir que pour des cultures annuelles (maraîchage, fleurs) en terrain plat.

DEF

A markedly flattened and somewhat rounded pellet or curled fragment, chip, or flake of clay, generally embedded in a sandy matrix and esp. abundant at the base of sandy beds. It may arise from the drying and cracking of a thin layer of coherent mud, the fragment commonly being rolled or blown into sand and buried, and forming a lenticular bleb upon wetting.

CONT

When a patch of clay or mud dries out, that upper surface cracks and peels away from the under-layers. These thin "leaves" of hardened clay may occasionally be transported a short distance and deposited in a sand or similar sediment in the form of flat or lens-shaped clay galls, generally oriented parallel to the bedding.

CONT

Replacing a tap washer. Given that up to 50% of an electricity bill may be attributable to water heating, it is important to ensure that your hot water taps don’t drip... A leaky tap usually occurs because the internal seal is worn out. Each time you turn the tap off, the soft flexible washer, which is made from rubber or a synthetic substitute, presses against the metal washer seat, wearing a tiny part of itself away. Eventually it becomes thin and irregular in shape. This allows water to seep past and creates the annoying drip. If you don’t replace it but continue to screw the tap down tighter and tighter, eventually you will get metal forcing you to call in a plumber to regrid the washer seating. That can be an expensive business!

CONT

We undertake all types of plumbing work from changing a tap washer to the installation on commercial buildings.

DEF

A sprayer equipped with a cone nozzle.

CONT

Cone nozzle. Liquid is forced through a swirl plate, having one or more tangential or helical slots or holes, into a swirl chamber. An air core is formed as the liquid passes with a high rotational velocity from the swirl chamber through a circular orifice. The thin sheet of liquid emerging from the orifice forms a hollow cone as it moves away from the orifice, owing to the tangential and axial components of velocity. A solid cone pattern can be achieved by passing liquid centrally through the nozzle to fill the air core : this gives a narrower angle of spray and larger droplets.
