2, record 8, French, - cancer%20de%20l%27%26oelig%3Bsophage

SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size. 3, record 9, English, - scanning%20interferometric%20apertureless%20microscope

1, record 9, French, - SIAM

The disk-type centrifuge consists of a stack of thin disks in the shape of cones. The sedimentation takes place in the radial direction in the space between adjacent cones.... Feed enters at the center line of the rotating bowl and is accelerated by fins or channels at the bottom of the disk stack assembly before it is introduced into the bowl proper.... The heavy liquid separates quickly and settles to the bowl wall. Light liquid with some of the heavy liquid entrained as small drops enters the outside of the disk stack and flows up the sloped surfaces to the central portion of the disks. The entrained drops of heavy liquor are separated in the shallow layers between the disks and settle back to the bowl wall. Any solids contained in the feed are also settled to the bowl wall.... The bowl used with these machines contains a central stack of coned discs which ensure an almost constant length of flowpath, and the deposition of solids at the bowl wall produces only a minor reduction in the flowpath. 2, record 12, English, - disk%20type%20centrifuge

A major regional community(biome) of vegetation in high mountainous regions and on high-level plateaus. The plants generally grow in thin stony soil and are subjected to high light intensity and high wind speeds. The climate differs from that of the tundra as there is daylight in winter and darkness in summer, more precipitation and wind, and a higher degree of solar radiation, but no permafrost. The number of plant species, although limited, is greater than that found in the tundra. Certain drought-tolerant species(e. g. grasses, sedges, mosses, and lichens) are common to both communities. In temperate latitudes there are many brightly coloured flowers in summer on the alpine pastures. The vegetation changes as the altitude increases due to the associated drop in temperature. The vegetation also differs between north-and south-facing slopes. The lower limit of the alpine zone(see tree line) varies in different mountain regions and also varies with the wetness of the locality and the mass of the mountain range. 3, record 22, English, - alpine

Occurs in emission sources of finite thickness when radiant energy quanta emitted by atoms(or molecules) are absorbed by atoms of the same kind present in the same source. The absorbed energy is usually dissipated by collisional transfer of energy, or through emission of radiant energy of the same or other frequencies. In consequence, the observed radiant intensity of a spectral line(or band component) emitted by a source may be less than the radiant intensity would be from an optically thin source having the same number of emitting atoms. A thin opaque line in the femoral neck that on the anteroposterior view extends laterally from the inferior border of the neck for a variable distance, frequently reaching the superior border. The line is usually curved, sagging at its center; occasionally, it is almost straight. The sagging rope sign is most commonly seen as a residual after severe Perthes disease. In chondrocalcinosis articularis, calcified deposits develop in hyaline cartilage and fibrocartilage and in the joint capsules. The large joints are affected most often, especially the knees. The symphysis pubis is the second most common site of involvement. The roentgenograms demonstrate a characteristic picture. The menisci may show calcification. Very often there is a thin line of calcification in the articular cartilage which runs parallel with and slightly separated from the subchondral bony cortex. Calcification is found also in the articular cartilage and the fibrocartilage of other large joints, as well as within or adjacent to the joint capsule.(From TUROR, 1984, p. 1287. ] 2, record 31, English, - thin%20line%20of%20calcification

An exception to the pressing methods discussed previously occurs in the semi-dry hardboard plants. Mats are formed at moisture contents of about 25 to 30%(oven-dry basis). Screens similar to those used in the wet-process line are used to transport the mats. During hot pressing, these screens allow rapid venting of the moisture from the mat. The bottom surface of the pressed board has a screen impression, termed "screen-back", like that found on wet-process hardboards. Only relatively thin boards can be made with this type of pressing. 3, record 34, English, - screenback
