A cast-iron skillet, having been properly seasoned, is nonstick enough to please most cooks. The seasoning of a cast-iron skillet is done by coating the hot surface of the pan with oil then letting it rest—repeatedly. This creates a thin layer of polymerized oil that bonds with the surface of the pan. 2, record 1, English, - seasoning

SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size. 3, record 6, English, - scanning%20interferometric%20apertureless%20microscope

1, record 6, French, - SIAM

Leaks... fall into two basic types : internal leakage [such] as a thin oil film is built into the working parts of a hydraulic system. This lubricates the mating surfaces of valve spools, cylinder pistons, and other moving parts. Oil is not lost through this normal internal leakage since it eventually returns to the system reservoir. However, too much internal leakage will slow the operation of the system and waste power through the generation of heat. In some cases, it may cause cylinders to creep or drift. Or it may cause loss of oil control in the valves.... External oil leaks not only look bad-they can be expensive and hazardous.... A small leak can also be the signal for a hydraulic rupture that may injure a person while putting the machine out of operation.... Every joint in a hydraulic circuit is a potential point of leakage. This is why the number of connections in a system is kept at a minimum. Components can leak, but care in assembly and use of new seals and gaskets during overhaul will help to reduce this problem. 2, record 9, English, - leak

2, record 9, French, - fuite

The non-contact construction of this bearing makes it particularly suited for improving rotational accuracy and enhancing quietness and robustness. 4, record 14, English, - fluid%20dynamic%20bearing

Computer simulation of single-well steam assisted gravity drainage(SW-SAGD).... Steam assisted gravity drainage(SAGD) is an effective method of producing heavy oil and bitumen. In a typical SAGD approach, steam is injected into a horizontal well located directly above a horizontal producer. A steam chamber grows around the injection well and helps displace heated oil toward the production well. Single-well(SW) SAGD attempts to create a similar process using only one horizontal well. This may include steam injection from the toe of the horizontal well with production at the heel. Obvious advantages of SW-SAGD include cost savings and utility in relatively thin reservoirs. However, the process is technically challenging. To improve early-time response of SW-SAGD, it is necessary to heat the nearwellbore area to reduce oil viscosity and allow gravity drainage to take place. 1, record 18, English, - single%2Dwell%20steam%20assisted%20gravity%20drainage

2, record 18, French, - drainage%20gravitaire%20assist%C3%A9%20par%20injection%20de%20vapeur%20sur%20puits%20unique

Film Quality. The film flexibility of oil paint has several consequences. Oil paint can be used on flexible supports such as canvas, whereas the more brittle films of the older paints require a rigid support, such as a wood panel or a plaster wall... Because of the oil' s flexibility, heavier applications of oil paint do not crack, as do egg tempera or distemper colors. Therefore a greater range of textural effects, from thick to thin and from rough to smooth, becomes possible in the oil technique. The film flexibility of oil paint allows the building up of layers of paint, one over the other, permitting the artist to paint over parts of the picture, adding further subtlety or unifying the disparate elements in the painting. Oil paintings can become more complex than can pictures painted in older techniques, as the artist adds layer on layer of compositional modification. 1, record 20, English, - film%20flexibility

Horizontal Rotary Cup Oil Burners. This type of burner atomizes the oil by spinning it in a thin film from a horizontal rotating cup and injecting high velocity primary air into the oil film through an annular nozzle which surrounds the rim of the atomizing cup. This atomizing cup and frequently the primary air fan are mounted on a horizontal main shaft which is motor driven and rotates at constant speed, 58 to 100 r/s depending on the size and make of burner. The oil is fed to the atomizing cup at controlled rates from an oil pump which is usually driven from the main shaft through a worm and gear. 2, record 27, English, - horizontal%20rotating%20cup

2, record 29, French, - grille%2Dma%C3%AFs%20%C3%A0%20huile%20chaude
