At the center of the Earth lies the core, which is nearly twice as dense as the mantle because its composition is metallic (iron-nickle alloy) rather than stony. Unlike the yolk of an egg, however, the Earth’s core is actually made up of two distinct parts: a 2,200-kilometer (1,400-mile) thick liquid outer core and a 1,250-kilometer (775-mile) thick solid inner core.

The outermost solid layer of the Earth, mostly consisting of crystalline rock and extending no more than a few miles from the surface to the Mohorovicic discontinuity.

Earth’s outermost, rigid, rocky layer is called the crust. It is composed of low-density, easily melted rocks; the continental crust is predominantly granitic rock, while composition of the oceanic crust corresponds mainly to that of basalt and gabbro. Analyses of seismic waves, generated by earthquakes within Earth’s interior, show that the crust extends about 50 km (30 miles) beneath the continents but only 5-10 km (3-6) miles beneath the ocean floors.

On less steep tundra slopes, ice-rich permafrost is commonly insulated from thaw by stable, vegetated regolith. If sudden slippage of regolith occurs, exposure of the permafrost may lead to seasonal retrogression or failure. Alternatively, deeper penetration of thaw into the permafrost itself may induce rapid slippage in which the surface regolith is passively rafted away by failure of the thawed, ice-rich material below. ... Such rapid failure of the active layer are commonly referred to as skin flows.

for "saw cut veneer" : Veneers are cut in two grades or thicknesses, known as saw cut and knife cut. The first named are the thickest, and vary in thickness from 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch. They are cut from the log with a large circular saw, and usually yield about 12 sheets to the inch. Knife cut veneers are much thinner, modern machines making it possible to get from 50 to 100 sheets to the inch, the very thin ones being used as picture mounts. These are cut with rotary and flat knives. In saw cutting the log is well steamed and placed between two stocks, like a leg in a lathe, and under a knife for its whole length. The log is now forced round and against the knife which drops the required thickness at each revolution. By cutting spirally the grain is accentuated and enlarged.

Each layer of plywood is called a veneer; these are produced in several ways including rotary cutting, half-round cutting with the stay log, slicing, and sawing. Rotary cutting is by far the most important... Logs which are to be made into rotary-cut veneer... are removed from storage and cut into bolts... The bolts are softened... and the bark is removed. Each bolt is centered in a large lathe, and the cutting mechanism-a pressure bar and knife that run the full length of the bolt-is put in place. As the bolt is turned, the knife peels off a thin layer of veneer while the pressure bar compresses the wood ahead of the knife to reduce splitting and cutting checks.

Peeling provides the greatest volume and the most rapid production, because logs are merely rotated against a flat knife and the veneer is peeled off in a long continuous sheet.
