Les grains, après avoir été récoltés et battus, se trouvent en général menés à leurs balles, à des semences d'herbes parasites, à de la terre, etc. Pour les nettoyer et les débarrasser de ces corps étrangers, on a recours au vannage qui consiste à les soumettre à l'action d'un fort courant d'air; celui-ci entraîne les corps plus légers auxquels les grains sont mélangés. L'opération du vannage se fait généralement avec un tarare.
