Herein lies the major difference between the two look-alike forms — natural arches and natural bridges. Geologists insist on two designations because they are formed by different processes. Water does most of the work in creating both landforms. However, a natural bridge spans a valley of erosion and is therefore produced by running water. A natural arch is formed by "holing through" of thin walls or fins mostly by weathering processes-processes that operate more rapidly in the presence of water. 3, record 5, English, - natural%20bridge

4, record 17, English, - natural%20arch

What sets DCD design apart from the conventional diamond interchange is that it combines left-turning traffic with through traffic. In avalanche forecasting, the concept of "bridging" refers to the point in time when the strong snow that overlies a weak layer becomes strong enough that it "bridges" over the weakness. The idea here is that when this point occurs, the strong snow will carry the weight of a person and prevent their force from penetrating through to the weak layer. The strong snow is the "bridge. "Bridging layer" means that a layer has become thick and strong enough that it can provide a "bridge" over the weak layers underlying it. So weight applied on the surface will have a harder time penetrating through the strong "midpack" and triggering the weaker snow near the bottom. "Bridging" is impossible to quantify and if the bridge fails then the result is normally a very large avalanche. Starch gel electrophoresis has been a popular technique, although it is now somewhat superseded by the use of polyacrylamide gels, which minimize convection and diffusion effects. A block or "plate" of starch gel is prepared, and the sample is applied in a narrow band(line) across the block about midway between the ends, which are contacted with electrodes through a connecting bridge. When current is passed through the cell, the different components of a mixture move with velocities that depend on their electric charges, their sizes, and their shapes. As electrophoresis proceeds, the negatively charged components migrate toward the anode and the positively charged components migrate toward the cathode. The result is a series of separated bands or lines of sample constituents, such as visualized by a stain. 2, record 28, English, - starch%20gel%20electrophoresis

Arming for the data wars. The news and data streaming endlessly through computers is a big business in its own right. Last year, the four main companies-Bloomberg, Bridge, Dow Jones and Reuters-together collected $4. 4 billion of sales for providing the information that lubricates the workings of the financial markets. What makes each service unique is the historical data it offers and the number-crunching software it provides for customers to analyse the data. If, say, a fund manager has a peculiar hunch that price swings in French shares might affect the way American municipal bonds fluctuate, he needs decades of prices and a sophisticated way to process them. A vendor that can provide him only two years of stock prices will not meet his needs. Although Reuters’ breadth of information remains unmatched, it has yet to master the art of supplying historical data packaged up with analytical software. For now, that market belongs to Bloomberg. 4, record 31, English, - knowledge%20warfare

... monochromatic UV photometer available from Du Pont; similar designs are widely used in modern LC. UV radiation at 254 nm from a low-pressure mercury lamp shines on the entrance of a flow cell and is transmitted through this sample cell and strikes the analytical prototube. Radiation from the source also is directed through a neutral-density filter, and then to the reference photocell. Current from these photocells is fed to log amplifiers, which generate an output linear with solute concentration. The output signal to the recorder normally is attenuated with a simple bridge network. 1, record 39, English, - monochromatic%20UV%20photometer

Fiber Length. Traditionally, the fiber length distribution or weighted average fiber length of a pulp sample has been determined either by microscopic examination of a representative number of fibers, by means of a special drainage grid, or by screen classification of a sample into different length fractions.... In the classification method, a dilute suspension of fibers is made to flow at high velocity parallel to screen slots, while a much slower velocity passes through the slots. In this way, the fibers are presented lengthwise to a series of selected screens with successively smaller mesh openings, and only the fibers short enough to bridge the openings pass into the next chamber. The pulp sample is typically divided into five length fractions. 1, record 40, English, - classification%20method

De cette manière, les fibres se présentent longitudinalement par rapport à la série de tamis et seules les fibres suffisamment courtes pour ne pas recouvrir plusieurs mailles peuvent passer dans la chambre suivante. 1, record 40, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20par%20fractionnement

La réception de ces fils a lieu sur un convoyeur, de sorte que la température de ceux-ci soit voisine du point de collage de la matière. for simulations and explanations, the bridge between global concepts and local component descriptions is provided by a topological search process through which components can determine their states(e. g., they can find out whether there is a conductive path between a port and a voltage source). This process is similar to envisioning in that it is triggered by components and roots simulation and causality in local information about component states. The difference is that the search is driven by domain-specific concepts like "conductive loop", which describe phenomena emerging from component interactions and influencing their states, and are thus reminiscent of processes à la QP theory. This combination allows explanations to articulate domaine principles beyond the functioning of a given device while still elucidating specific behaviors. 1, record 49, English, - topological%20search
