[The authors] define modality as the distinct sensory channels or modes through which humans(or machines) perceive and interact with the external environment. It involves the recognition and interpretation of stimuli by specific sensory organs or technical sensors, which enable the detection and processing of sensory information. Stimuli represent the external events, patterns, or objects that trigger sensory experiences... These stimuli activate the corresponding sensors, initiating the conversion of sensory information into digital or neural signals that are further processed in our nervous system or within the circuits of a computer. 2, record 2, English, - modality
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Modality refers to how things are experienced in terms of sensory inputs as sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. There are devices like cameras, haptic sensors, microphones etc. which directly correspond to human senses for the computational world. There are devices like motion sensors, keyboards, and physiological sensors that are indirect. Some researchers define modality as how information is represented and communicated between people, such as gesture, speech, written language, gaze, etc. 3, record 2, English, - modality

... the industry standard for fish detection are split-beam echosounders. In ideal survey conditions, their echograms provide a clear image of fish as they travel through the beam of ensonified water. For high-energy tidal channels, the conventional processing approach is to limit the depth range by excluding the surface as it is difficult to distinguish bubbles from fish in areas of entrained air... When fish form dense aggregations, it can be difficult to acoustically identify an individual fish from its neighbour when the signal is over-saturated. 3, record 6, English, - fish%20detection

Gap winds can range in width from hundreds of feet to over one hundred miles, and in unusual circumstances can be associated with strong winds exceeding 50 knots. These winds are normally quite shallow, extending hundreds of feet to a few thousand feet above the surface, with large changes of wind, or wind shear, at their upper and lateral boundaries. Gap winds are generally strongest when there is a large pressure drop across a gap, although there is one class of gap wind that does not depend on a pressure gradient across the gap. 3, record 23, English, - gap%20wind
Record number: 23, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Although physicially plausible, the venturi mechanism appears to be at odds with most real gap wind situations, where the strongest winds are generally over the exit region of the gap, not at the narrowest section or constriction. There are a number of reasons for the failure of the funnel model. First, there is no rigid lid in the real world. ... Another reason the flow tend to be strongest in the gap exit region is that there is often a synoptic or mesoscale pressure gradient across the gap. 4, record 23, English, - gap%20wind

In order to increase the surface area of enzyme film per unit volume, various devices have been developed as practical equipment. For example, a spiral-type reactor.... Spirally-wound multipore biocatalytic modules have been shown to provide an excellent reactor configuration for the use of collagen-enzyme membrane systems. The spiral-wound reactor offers a number of advantages. It guides the flow through a number of organized flow channels which offer low and essentially equal hydraulic resistances. Therefore, all the fluid elements spend the same residence time in contact with the membrane unit thus ensuring good contact efficiency. The small fluid channels provide a large membrane surface area per unit reactor volume and high throughput. 3, record 46, English, - spiral%2Dtype%20reactor

The accumulator is intended for heating fuel components in the rocket and space engines and can be used in space engineering, aircraft and other branches of industry. The task of increasing gas heating efficiency, reducing mass of the construction, diminution of dimensions and lowering thermal and hydraulic losses of heated gas is solved by making a heat accumulating element as a mono-unit in the form of cylinder. The covers with branch pipes are recessed in the ends of the mono-unit. The covers are butt joined to mono-unit on conical surfaces through pressurizing end seals at forming the collectors for gas feed and discharge. Plate electric heater and channels or annular slot for flowing gas are located along the longitudinal axis. The axis of channels or annular slot location divides the mass of heat accumulating element into two equal parts. In so doing, porous insert or a set of badly stream-lined bodies is in the channels or annular slot. All units of heat accumulator are coated with gas-dense material. 2, record 73, English, - annular%20slot

Imaging spectrometry ... is the field in remote sensing where sensors acquire image data in many, narrow and contiguous wavebands. The aim is to produce on a pixel by pixel basis radiance and reflectance data, which can be used to model physical properties of the Earth surface. This data forms an addition to subsurface geophysical data. 6, record 79, English, - imaging%20spectroscopy
Record number: 79, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Imaging spectroscopy has many names in the remote sensing community, including imaging spectrometry, hyperspectral, and ultraspectral imaging. Spectroscopy is the study of electromagnetic radiation. Spectrometry is derived from spectro-photometry, the measure of photons as a function of wavelength, a term used for years in astronomy. However, spectrometry is becoming a term used to indicate the measurement of non-light quantities, such as in mass spectrometry(e. g. Ball, 1995). Hyper means excessive, but no imaging spectrometer in use can hardly be considered hyper-spectral, after all, a couple of hundred channels pales in comparison to truly high resolution spectrometer with millions of channels. Ultraspectral is beyond hyperspectral, a lofty goal that has not yet been reached.... Researchers at the USGS Spectroscopy Lab are studying and applying methods for identifying and mapping materials through spectroscopic remote sensing(called imaging spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, imaging spectrometry, ultraspectral imaging, etc), on the Earth and throughout the solar system using laboratory, airborne and spacecraft spectrometers. 4, record 79, English, - imaging%20spectroscopy

Speech Detection. If the Voice Activity Detector(VAD) option is active, a speech detector is used to identify periods of silence or idle VF channels to provide further compression in addition to ADPCM. This function is performed by the CDP card. The PCM signal is first passed through a high-pass filter to remove DC bias and 50/60 Hz. components that might disturb the speech or modem detectors. The energy of each sample is measured, and the average speech power is calculated. If the power is greater than-31 dBmO(dBmO equals a digital milliwatt), the signal is recognized as speech.
