Mothballing is the process of stabilizing a facility so that no damage occurs to the facility should it make sense at a later time to incur the capital expenditures associated with continuing to operate, extending the life, or repowering the facility. Typically, a decision to mothball a facility might be made as a hedge against, or in anticipation of, changes in market conditions; i. e., increases in relative fuel prices, or an increase in the value of installed capacity.... Typical activities involved in mothballing a facility might include the following types of activities intended to preserve existing equipment :-’Racking Out’ or removal and storage of motor control center circuit breakers or 'switchgear’(this would also be done for a facility that has been retired and is scheduled for dismantling)-Placing a heat source or desiccants in the furnace to maintain a temperature above the dew point(at which condensation collects and corrodes the boiler structures.)-The application of grease or other coatings to reduce corrosion of components such as pumps and motors.-The installation of an air desiccant system to blow dry air through the steam turbine, condenser, boiler tubes and pipes. 2, record 13, English, - mothballing

Grapes for late-harvest wine are left on the vine for several weeks or in some cases months after the usual harvest. With more time, the berries become riper and thus sweeter. The Pan-American Highway is a network of roads nearly 48, 000 kilometres(29, 800 miles) in total length. Except for an 87 kilometre(54 mi) rainforest gap, called the Darién Gap, the road links the mainland nations of the Americas in a connected highway system. According to Guinness World Records, the Pan-American Highway is the world's longest "motorable road". However, because of the Darién Gap, it is not possible to cross between South America and Central America by traditional motor vehicle. The Pan-American Highway system is mostly complete and extends from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in North America to the lower reaches of South America. Several highway termini are claimed to exist, including the cities of Puerto Montt and Quellón in Chile and Ushuaia in Argentina. No comprehensive route is officially defined in Canada and the United States, though several highways there are called "Pan-American". The Pan-American Highway passes through many diverse climates and ecological types, from dense jungles to cold mountain passes. Since the highway passes through many countries, it is far from uniform. Some stretches of the highway are passable only during the dry season, and in many regions driving is occasionally hazardous. 1, record 27, English, - Pan%2DAmerican%20Highway

1, record 27, Spanish, - Carretera%20Panamericana

Biomass burning has only recently been recognized as a major source of important trace gases and aerosol particles. Through burning, the chemical elements in vegetation are cycled back to the atmosphere and to soils in chemical and physical forms and proportions which make biomass burning an important biogeochemical process. Before the advent of humans, fire was ignited naturally by lightning strikes in dry vegetated regions. Today, however, the process is driven almost exclusively by human activity which includes the burning of forested areas to facilitate land clearing, the burning of harvest debris to maintain cleared land, the extensive burning of natural grasslands and savannas to sustain nomadic agriculture, and the burning of biomass as fuel for cooking and heating. The importance of biomass burning is well recognized in International Global Atmospheric Chemistry and this activity, Biomass Burning Experiment : Impact on the Atmosphere and Biosphere(BIBEX), was established to address this phenomenon. It is being carried out by a multi-national science team at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany. 3, record 29, English, - Biomass%20Burning%20Experiment%3A%20Impact%20on%20the%20Atmosphere%20and%20Biosphere

First the syrup is concentrated to gain super saturation in the liquor. Graining is obtained through seeding with crystals of dry powdered sugar. The crystals draw sugar toward themselves and start growing. When the crystals have reached a size of approximately 40-50 um a dilution takes place to avoid conglomerates. 2, record 35, English, - graining

This machine usually consists of two small washing or scouring tanks, drying cylinders, and a straightening gill-box. It is made in several forms, for each type certain constructional advantages or advantages for the material treated being claimed. It is employed either before or after combing to thoroughly clean worsted slivers or "tops," for not only does the wool become sullied in passing through the several preparing machines, but impurities which cannot be extracted in the scouring bowls have revealed themselves and may here be conveniently got rid of. The process of "blueing" to give a white appearance to the slivers or tops is frequently resorted to, and is usually affected on the backwasher. 3, record 46, French, - fanage

The purpose of the PREMIX [TM] Concrete Pre-Mixer by WAM [TM] is the creation of a homogeneous mixture of cement, additives and water able to evenly coat the aggregates. PREMIX [TM], which is installed before the truck mixer drum, highly improves the quality of concrete. Its special design, its revolutionary working principle and its particularly high efficiency add a new dimension to the process. The dry feed chamber houses a high speed feeder screw which feeds material into the mixing chamber where water is injected through three tangential nozzles. Influent flow control to increase the pollution load treated during rainy periods... As for the system management, the French Decree of 22 December 1995 states that flows or pollution loads exceeding the reference capacity of the treatment plant may be temporarily admitted. This is especially interesting in the case of separate wastewater sewerage, as inappropriate connections of runoff water and rainfall induced infiltration cause hydraulic overloads in such networks. An automated influent flow control has been implemented on a 8000 population equivalent plant to admit a maximum of twice the dry weather peak flow : the clarifier is then dynamically managed so that neither sludge loss nor degradation through anoxic conditions may occur. 2, record 51, English, - dry%20weather%20peak%20flow

Determination of the effective opening size, dw, FIH. The effective opening size of a geotextile, dw, is determined by wet sieving quartz sand of known composition using modified sieving equipment. The geotextile functions as a sieve.... The test sample,(diameter 18 cm), is clamped into a sieve frame. The sand, which has a dry weight of 100 g for wovens and a dry weight of 300 g for non-wovens, is then sprinkled onto the sample. The sand is then sprayed continuously with water and sieved for 15 minutes in a modified sieve machine with a vertical amplitude of 3 mm at a frequency of 50 Hz. The sand which passes through the geotextile sample is caught on a paper filter and then analyzed with [different sieves].... The effective opening size, dw, is found from the coarsest sand fraction which has passed through the test sample and in which there is still a defined quantity in relation to the original fraction. 4, record 53, English, - effective%20opening%20size

"Dry boring" methods employ the use of a temporary casing to seal the pile bore through water-bearing or unstable strata overlying suitable stable material. Upon reaching the design depth a reinforcing cage is introduced, concrete is placed in the bore and bought up to the required level. The casing is then withdrawn. "Wet" boring also employs a temporary casing through unstable ground and is used when the pile bore cannot be sealed against water ingress. Boring is then undertaken using a digging bucket to drill through the underlying soils to design depth. The reinforcing cage is lowered into the bore and concrete is placed by tremmie pipe, following which extraction of the temporary casing takes place. 1, record 58, English, - temporary%20casing

It [blocking pattern] persists from one to several weeks.... there are three kinds of blocks :... a high-over-low block in which the flow splits, one branch taking a poleward excursion and the other branch an equatorward excursion. Any traveling storms that approach the block from the west, tend to weaken and go either over the ridge(top of the block) or pass through the trough on the south side.... An "omega" block so named because the flow about this block resembles the Greek letter "Omega". Cyclonic(counterclockwise) circulations can occur both southwest and southeast of the block(where low pressure is indicated on the diagram), and the weather near them can be stormy. Within the block, however, the weather is benign and warmer than normal.... A stationary high-amplitude ridge. Such a ridge often forms just off the West Coast of North America in winter. If it persists, it steers Pacific storms far to the north and keeps the weather in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest anomalously dry and mild. 2, record 59, English, - blocking%20situation

Several [internal cooling] systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches : liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods.... The super-cold air system with water vapor works much the same way [as the liquified gas system]. Here, very dry, subzero blowing air expands the parison. The expanded air is allowed to circulate through the bottle and exhaust. Immediately after the parison has expanded, a fine mist of water is injected into the cold air stream. As it flows, the water mist turns into snow. As the snow circulates through the container, it melts and then vaporizes. At the end of the molding cycle, the water mist is stopped, permitting the circulating air to purge and dry the interior before the mold is opened and the part is removed. Production rates can be improved as much as 50%. 1, record 64, English, - super%2Dcold%20air%20system%20with%20water%20vapor

[...] 1, record 64, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20ISC

Workpieces having dimensions less than 4 in. can be powder coated with a device known as an electrostatic fluidized bed. In this process, powder is held in a container having an open top and a porous bottom through which an upward flow of air causes the powder mass to levitate or "fluidize". Charging electrodes near the surface impart an electrical charge to the powder. Electrically grounded workpieces pass over the surface of the bed and collect a coating of powder. The coating is then cured in a baking oven. There are techniques for applying dry powder coatings without the use of electrostatics.... These processes typically involve preheating the workpiece to a temperature substantially above the melting point of the powder and then applying the powder, either by dipping the workpiece into a fluidized bed or by spraying air-suspended powder directly onto the hot surface of the workpiece. The powder melts immediately upon contact and flows to form a film, which is subsequently cured in a bake oven. 2, record 72, English, - sublimation%20coating

The fermentation of solid substrates such as starchy or cellulosic materials can be approached in two different ways. The solid material can be suspended in an aqueous medium. A general problem with such preparations is that gelatinization of the starches, etc. can generate highly viscous broths causing poor mixing and O2 transfer at dry weight concentrations higher than 2% w/v. There is also the obvious diseconomy of adding so much water to the substrate only to remove it from the product. Alternatively, then, the problem is approached through 'solid state fermentation’, the growth of microorganisms on solid materials without the presence of free liquid. 3, record 75, English, - solid%20substrate%20fermentation

Such techniques can be divided into two basic types: thin layer and deep bed. In the former system, the organisms are grown on the surface of the substrate, which is spread on shallow trays about 2-4 cm deep; the trays are incubated in air-conditioned rooms or cabinets. The simplest deep bed systems consist of heaps of substrate that may be stirred periodically by hand. More sophisticated, fully automated systems include rotating drums, conveyor belt systems, which pass through air-conditioned tunnels, or deep tanks through which air is blown. The substrates used are generally based on wheat bran. 1, record 75, English, - solid%20substrate%20fermentation

Organic phosphates, as insecticides, are usually liquids classified as Poisonous articles, Class B. The liquids may be incorporated in a powdered absorbent and are then described as organic phosphate mixtures, dry. The liquids may be placed also in cylinders and pressurized with either a liquefied or non-liquefied gas. In this case, the mixtures may be classified as Poisonous articles, Class A. One of the most important properties of the organic phosphate compounds is that they are readily absorbed through the skin. 1, record 86, English, - organic%20phosphate

High Tension Separation (H.T.S.). This, which includes electrostatic separation, is an operation applicable to the dry separation of small particles. It is based on their relative ability to acquire and to retain electric charge applied at a high voltage. Suitably exposed minerals can capture (or alternatively lose) electrons and then be attracted to, repelled from or neutralized by other bodies which are either grounded or charged. 2, record 92, English, - high%2Dtension%20separation
