Angiograms are taken after the injection of a dye in the patient's arm to enhance the appearance of blood vessels, under a specific illumination and filter. The dye has an absorption peak, which determines the illumination light, and an emission peak, which determines the filter that retains only the fluorescent contribution.... Images are acquired from 10 [seconds] to 15 [minutes] after the injection while the dye circulates through the retinal arteries, capillaries, veins, and is eliminated from the vasculature, while staining in the optic disc and lesions.... Fluorescein angiograms... are useful in detecting leaks and other abnormalities in arteries and veins. Membrane filtration is the method of choice for the analysis of fecal coliforms in water. Samples to be tested are passed through a filter of particular pore size(generally 0. 45 micrometre). The microorganisms present in the water remain on the filter surface. When the filter is placed in a sterile Petri dish and saturated with an appropriate medium, growth of the desired organisms is encouraged, while that of other organisms is suppressed.... A 100 ml volume of a water sample is drawn through a membrane filter(0. 45 µm pore size) through the use of a vacuum pump. The filter is placed on a Petri dish containing M-FC agar and incubated for 24 hours at 44. 5 °C(112. 1 degrees F). This elevated temperature heat shocks non-fecal bacteria and suppresses their growth. 9, record 6, English, - membrane%20fecal%20coliform%20agar

2, record 6, French, - g%C3%A9lose%20pour%20d%C3%A9tection%20de%20coliformes%20f%C3%A9caux%20par%20filtration%20sur%20membrane

... channeling is a problem specific to pool sand filters. When the sand(or crushed glass) media captures enough material that changes its physical properties, [the] sand's ability to screen particles out of water is reduced. It creates uneven pressure spots where water is trying to force its way through the media. Eventually, these uneven pressure spots in the filter can form an opening, called a channel. When the channel opens up enough, unfiltered water can flow through it and bypass the majority of the sand.... Cloudy pool water is almost inevitable at that point. 3, record 15, English, - channelled%20filter

In the USA, it has been standard practice to drive securing pins through overlaps in the geotextile filter, at 0. 6 to 1. 5 m centres, even if the joints are sewn or heat-bonded. With unbounded rip-rap on some sites, there is a tendency for the stone to move after placement as it settles into its final resting position. As this has been found to cause tears in the geotextile at the securing pins, it now appears safer to place the geotextile fairly loosely over the prepared surface, using the minimum possible number of securing pins. 1, record 30, English, - securing%20pin

Since both the flavor molecules and the caffein molecules of the coffee are water-soluble, the water absorbs the flavor and caffein of the bean. The first batch of beans, exhausted of their flavor and caffeine, is discarded, and the flavor-and caffeine-rich water is run through a carbon filter that removes the caffeine. A new batch of unroasted beans is brought in and soaked in the flavor-rich water. Since the water is already saturated with flavor, only the caffeine of the second batch is absorbed. This results in a second batch of beans that contains all of its original flavor but less of its caffeine. The flavor-rich water can be reused several times to decaffeinate multiple batches of coffee. 1, record 50, English, - decaffeinate

Diatomite products that are further processed are called calcined and flux calcined diatomite. Most diatomite products are used in filtering applications. With a large particle size distribution, the smallest of the particles occupy space between larger particles. This reduces the rates of flow through the filter. The purpose of calcining is to reduce the particle size distribution. The use of the term calcined is ingrained in the diatomite industry and markets so it is used frequently, but diatomite is actually sinterized not calcined. Sintering reduces the size distribution by melting the smallest particles together. To produce calcined diatomite the natural product is heated to between 900°C and 1100°C. The high temperatures burn off organic contaminants, and shrink and harden the individual particles. Some of the diatom frustules are sintered into small clusters. The resulting calcined diatomite has a density of about 125 to 150 kg per cubic meter. Flux calcined diatomite is produced using the same methods except a fluxing agent is added before heating. 3, record 57, English, - flux%2Dcalcined%20diatomite

A typical micronic type filter... utilizes an element made of specially treated paper which is formed in vertical convolutions(wrinkles). An internal spring holds the elements in shape. The micronic element is designed to prevent the passage of solids greater than 10 microns(0. 000394 inch) in size. In the event that the filter element becomes clogged, the spring loaded relief valve in the filter head will bypass the fluid after a differential pressure of 50 p. s. i. has been built up. Hydraulic fluid enters the filter through the inlet port in the filter body and flows around the element inside the bowl. Filtering takes place as the fluid passes through the element into the hollow core, leaving the foreign material on the outside of the element. 3, record 58, English, - micron%20filter

Two-stage line-type hydraulic system filters are being used in some recent aircraft models. The typical two-stage filter has two filter elements, two bypass valves, and two differential pressure indicators. The first-stage element can filter out smaller particles than the second-stage element can. Normally, the fluid passes through both elements, flowing first through the first stage element. As long as the first stage element is unclogged and functioning, there will be no foreign matter left for the second-stage element to remove. However, if the first-stage element becomes clogged, its bypass valve opens and fluid goes directly from the filter inlet port to the second-stage element, which then takes over the job of filtering out foreign particles. 3, record 64, English, - two%2Dstage%20filter

First, the beets are cleaned in a beet washer. Then, a machine called a slicer is used to cut the beets into long strips that look like shoestring potatoes or noodles. The beet noodles are sent through a machine called a diffuser or extractor. Hot water is mixed with the beets to dissolve and remove the sugar from the beet noodles. The water and sugar juice are saved, and this solution is called "raw juice. "... The raw juice is treated with lime and carbon dioxide gas to clean the mixture again. It is sent through a big, round filter to clean it and remove other non-sugars. The raw juice goes into a series of big tanks called evaporators where some of the water is boiled off. At this point, the mixture contains more sugar than water. It is a thick-like syrup and is again filtered to make sure it is very clean. 3, record 67, English, - raw%20juice

Filters will certainly remove some physical dirt but only dirt that gets pumped into them. A PAPR, powered air purifying respirator, is a positive air system that uses a battery to power a blower, which then pumps air through a filter into a mask or a hood. The blower, battery and filters are usually belt-worn, and connected to the hood or mask by a breathing tube. The clean, filtered, cool air flows into the breathing zone. The airflow is much higher than the wearer needs to breathe, and the excess flow creates a positive pressure as it passes through the mask. This pressure pushes out, and keeps contamination from leaking in. This is different from a normal gas mask, which uses the wearer's lung power to pull air through a filter. There are three types of respiratory protection : air-purifying respirators ["filtrants, ""à purification d’air" or "à épuration d’air"], supplied-air respirators ["à adduction d’air"] and self-contained breathing apparatus ["autonome"]. Air-purifying respirators clean contaminated air before it is inhaled by passing the air through a cleansing media such as a mechanical filter, cartridge or filter/cartridge combination. The air is passed through the cleansing media by breathing or by a blower. These latter are called powered air-purifying respirators. 7, record 77, English, - powered%20air%2Dpurifying%20respirator

coefficient of haze(COH)(in atmospheric chemistry) : One technique of measurement of the amount of filterable particulate matter suspended in air which has been used in the past depends upon drawing a measured sample of air(usually 1 000 linear feet) through a paper or membrane filter. A measurement is made of the intensity of light transmitted through the dust spot formed relative to that transmitted through an identical clean filter. The dirtiness of the air is reported in terms of the COH unit. This relates to the quantity of particulate material which produces an optical density, lg(I 0/I) of 0. 01 when measured by light transmission at 400 nm and relative to the transmission of an identical dust-free filter taken as 100%. Thus a filter which transmitted 50% relative to the clean filter has an absorbance of 0. 301 or 30. 1 COH units. This is not a recommended measure of filterable particulate matter since the size, colour and other properties of the aerosol and the air in which it is suspended affect the results. A subdivision of physical chemistry comprising the study of phenomena characteristic of matter when one or more of its dimensions lie in the range between 1 nanometre and 1 micrometre. The science includes not only finely divided particles but also films, fibers, foams, pores, and surface irregularities. It is the dimension that is critical, rather than the nature of the material. Colloidal particles may be gaseous, liquid, or solid, and occur in various types of suspensions(imprecisely called solutions), e. g., solid/gas(aerosol), solid/solid, liquid/liquid emulsion), gas/liquid(foam). In this size range, the surface area of the particle is so much greater that its volume that unusual phenomena occur; for example, the particles do not settle out of the suspension by gravity, and are small enough to pass through filter membranes. Macromolecules(proteins and other high polymers) are at the lower limit of this range. 2, record 93, English, - colloid%20chemistry
