THROUGH FLIGHT EXPERIMENT [4 records]

Record 1 2007-03-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Exploration Equipment and Tools
CONT

Cosmic dust detector. This experiment is designed to measure the flux and momentum of cosmic dust in interplanetary space and around Venus. It may contribute to an understanding of the hazards of manned flight through space.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Équipement et outillage d'exploration spatiale
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Launching and Space Maneuvering
CONT

The Aeroassist Flight Experiment validates through orbital testing the concept of aerobraking. This concept uses a planet's atmosphere to slow an entry body in order to achieve an orbit about the planet, transfer to another orbit, or reenter and land on the planet's surface. The concept's primary purpose is to reduce fuel needed for planetary operations.

CONT

The European Drawer Rack(EDR) provides a modular capability for sub-rack payloads contained in Standard Experiment Drawers(SEDs) and Mid-Deck Lockers(MDLs) accommodated in an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack]. The EDR supports the independent operation of the multiple sub-rack payload hardware as well as the provision of a standardised interface to laboratory resources. It supports payload exchange at SED or MDL level. A fundamental goal of the EDR is to support the development of smaller sub-rack payloads through the provision of accommodation and flight opportunities where quick turnaround mission objectives are required.

OBS

European drawer rack; EDR: term and abbreviation officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).

  • Applications of Automation
  • Astronautics
CONT

Even today, a geostationary satellite, whose useful life has ended, must be abandoned in space. The experimental servicing satellite ESS applies robotics to resolve the problem of servicing a non-cooperative target in or near to a geostationary orbit, a region of space still out of reach to manned spaceflight. A three-month demonstration flight of ESS has been planned and all phases of its mission have been defined. These include the acquisition, inspection and servicing of an orbiting satellite through to parking it in a "graveyard" orbit. The project builds on the experience gained with the robotics technology experiment Rotex, flown on the D2 Mission.
