The catchpins were designed in one of two ways. A number are straightforward copper alloy cylindrical nails with a sharp point, and are hammered into the board face through the coverings. There are a large number of surmounted catchpins in which the nail has a square skirt of copper alloy plate halfway down the pin which is sometimes lightly decorated with engraved lines.

Clinch or clinching blocks are used with the hammer to draw the shoe tightly against the hoof. It is placed under the nail driven through the shoe and side of the hoof, which has already been cut. The head of the nail is hit with the hammer, forcing the nail securely against the hoof.
