A life-history strategy refers to how an organism allocates energy and resources to growth, development, reproduction, and survival across its lifespan, shaped by trade-offs that arise from environmental and evolutionary pressures... These strategies are expressed through life-history traits, such as size at birth, age and size at maturity, growth rate, and survival. 4, record 1, English, - life%2Dhistory%20trait

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Water does not flow through all treatment processes in a perfectly mixed condition. In some treatment units there can be substantial short circuiting. The disinfectant contact time(T), also referred to as T10,... is an estimate of the detention time within a basin or treatment unit during which 90 percent of the water passing through the unit is retained within the basin or treatment unit. T can be determined experimentally through a tracer study or it can be estimated based on a theoretical detention time(TDT) and baffling factor(BF).... Baffling factors(BFs) help estimate the contact time of a basin, pipe, or unit process based on the volume of and flow rate through the basin, pipe, or unit process. 5, record 2, English, - baffling%20factor

3, record 2, French, - facteur%20d%27efficacit%C3%A9%20hydraulique

There is an alternative between closed-and open-loop systems called standing column wells(SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger.... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe.... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. The bleed induces heat transfer by advection..., which improves significantly the thermal efficiency of the SCW. 2, record 3, English, - standing%20column%20well

3, record 3, French, - puits%20%C3%A0%20colonne%20permanente

In a telemedicine system, a patient is geographically removed from the presence of a doctor or other healthcare provider. For example, the patient could be at home instead of on site at a healthcare facility. Telemedical devices enable the healthcare provider to monitor the health status of a patient and potentially diagnose and treat some medical problems without the need for the patient to travel to the healthcare facility. The use of telemedical systems has the potential to reduce the cost of healthcare, and to improve the quality of healthcare through increased patient monitoring. Various known telemedicine systems provide a device to a patient that enables the patient to transmit medical data to a doctor or healthcare provider. Some devices are configured to record biosignals, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration rates, and transmit data of the recorded biosignals to a database for later review. 1, record 5, English, - biosignal

Purchase. From time to time refiners purchase product from others and pay for it like any other buyer, without any reciprocal supply conditions, although in the case of refiners these one-way agreements tend to be of short duration and for relatively small volumes to meet a temporary imbalance between their supplies and their supply commitments. As discussed further below, a more enduring or significant imbalance would tend to be addressed by a refiner through a reciprocal supply arrangement that benefitted the utilization rate of one of its refineries somewhere in the country and provided an additional measure of price and supply security. 1, record 7, English, - reciprocal%20supply%20arrangement

L'achat. 1, record 7, French, - accord%20d%27approvisionnement%20r%C3%A9ciproque

In a remote patient monitoring system, physiological data is collected through biomedical sensors in order to evaluate the well-being of patients outside of the hospital setting. Its purpose is to move traditional clinical settings into people's homes, where they live, work, and play. In order for the appropriate decisions to be made, the data collected is wirelessly transmitted to the healthcare provider. Using this type of tele-health, physiological data such as heart rate/pulse rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, blood pressure, and blood oxygen saturation can be measured and transmitted. 1, record 13, English, - remote%20patient%20monitoring%20system

A hydraulic fracture is formed by pumping the fracturing fluid into the wellbore at a rate sufficient to increase the pressure downhole to a value in excess of the fracture gradient of the formation rock. The pressure causes the formation to crack, allowing the fracturing fluid to enter and extend the crack farther into the formation. To keep this fracture open after the injection stops, a solid proppant, commonly a sieved round sand, is added to the fracture fluid. The propped hydraulic fracture then becomes a high permeability conduit through which the formation fluids can flow to the well. 2, record 23, English, - hydraulic%20fracture

Record number: 28, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense. 1, record 28, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin

All helicopters incorporate a one-way clutch system that allows the rotor blades to continue to rotate under the effects of inertia and autogiro-type flight in the event of engine failure.... the flow of the airstream through the helicopter rotor disk is reversed. The force of gravity continues the operation of the rotor blade, thereby reducing the rate of descent and allowing a successful emergency landing. Because of the time required to effect this change and the necessity for other flight maneuvers, these characteristics led to the development of a restricted area of operations of the helicopter known as the deadman's curve, bounding that area of height and speed in which the helicopter should not be operated. 1, record 29, English, - deadman%27s%20curve

The decline in the deficit-to-GDP ratio over time is achieved largely through expenditure reductions. There is a 1. 3 percentage point fall in the program spending-to-GDP ratio from 1993-94 to 1995-96 and, revenues as a share of GDP, adjusted for one-time factors in 1993-94, rise only marginally over time. Although the net debt-to-GDP ratio continues to rise over the 1993-94 to 1995-96 period, the rate of increase slows dramatically in 1995-96, setting the stage for declines in future years. 2, record 45, English, - program%20spending%2Dto%2DGDP%20ratio

An alternative approach to mixing through mechanical stirring... is to use the incoming air-stream in a bubble column or airlift reactor. Such systems have been applied successfully to microbial cultures. While having certain desirable properties, such as low shear, in order to achieve adequate mixing an airlift vessel requires careful design. poaching: a strategy in doubles play in which the player closest to the net extends the range of his reach by cutting in front of his or her partner in order to attempt a volley on the return of serve intended for his partner waiting near the baseline. 3, record 58, English, - poach

There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one’s partner’s side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In general, the French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms: crisscrossing, switching, to intervene. 3, record 58, English, - poach

You can advance the cause of your pairing by improving the ability to use the player nearer the net [net guard] to intervene, or fake to do so, in the exchanges. The interception of the return of serve or a mid-rally shot will demonstrate your resolve to dominate that court position... Even if your success rate is not all it could be, the threat you pose may be sufficient to earn other points, and to feint the interception when you have no intention of following through can induce a weak response which can be put away by your team-mate... The poaching shot is usually down the sidelines, wide of the opposing net guard. 2, record 58, English, - poach

On forcing a cell suspension at high pressure through a narrow orifice, the rapid pressure drop provides a very powerful means of disrupting the cells. In practice it is simple to design equipment to subject the cell suspension to shear forces before releasing the pressure. By changing the pressure applied, cells may be disrupted completely or only sufficiently to release periplasmic enzymes.... [Experimentors have] used a liquid shear system for the disruption of chloroplasts. The suspension was passed through a needle valve at pressures up to 20, 000 p. s. i. and a flow rate of 10 ml/min. Under these conditions, rupture of E. coli was indicated by an increase in glutamic acid decarboxylase activity. 2, record 62, English, - liquid%20shear
Record number: 62, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In practical terms liquid shear is associated with the generation of heat. As a result subsequent increases in the temperature of the suspension of up to 40 °C may be encountered. Cell suspensions must, therefore, be introduced to the apparatus at 0-4°C to minimise loss of enzyme activity. If recycling is used then cooling before re-entry is essential. Equally, with this type of equipment the best results are obtained by using a homogeneous cell suspension. Irregular particle sizes owing to filamentous or pelleted growth modes reduce the efficiency of cell breakage. 3, record 62, English, - liquid%20shear

Natural or man-made alterations in the atmospheric composition which affect the radiative profile and, hence, the earth's temperature and climate are said to be "radiative climate forcing" or simply "forcing". The concept of radiative forcing should not be confused with that of climate change. The rate of climate change depends on much more than simply the rate of change of radiative forcing. Radiative forcing measures the temperature change at the earth's surface that would be observed for a given atmosphere, if there were no climate feedback effects such as increased concentrations of water vapor, changes in atmospheric chemistry reaction rates, cloud feedbacks, albedo changes(via for example, changes in the extent of snow cover or desertification) ;and no system lags such as through ocean thermal inertia. 4, record 66, English, - forcing

climax : The culminating stage of plant succession for a given environment, the vegetation being conceived as having reached a highly stable condition. Others apply it to vegetation which they conceived to be stable only as long as the environment remains unchanged or to vegetation which changes only in response to changes in climate and/or soil substrate that are slow relative to the rate of plant succession.(2) Clements claimed that, for a given region, there was only one true climax-the stable vegetation of mesic sites, the nature of which determined by climate and hence termed by him the climatic climax; deviations that are stable only through the influences of factors other than climate received special names, e. g. pre-climax(local unfavorable conditions preventing full vegetational complexity), postclimax(local favorable conditions permitting fuller complexity), biotic climax(maintained by biotic factors), edaphic climax(maintained by soil factors). 4, record 67, English, - postclimax

Eddy diffusion broadens the band when passing through the column and detected in the chromatography. This is due to the molecules of the sample traveling through the column along many different paths of different lengths. The shortest path is the front of the band and the longest path is located in the back of the band. This can be corrected if the band is broad and the column support is of small size and uniform. This effect may be described by the van Deemter equation. H=A+(B/u) +Cu. Where M is the flow rate, A is the eddy diffusion term, B/u is the longitudinal diffusion term and Cu is the mass-transfer rate term. Constant productivity(by adding fresh biocatalyst during operation) is not always operationally convenient or even possible when reactors of the packed-bed type are used. Another useful way is to control the flow-rate through the reactor. The flow rate can be continuously or intermittently decreased so as to maintain the degree of conversion constant. During the period of operation, however, the quantity of product produced per unit time will fall. Here one must express the results as the flow rate required to give the desired product quality in a given time, rather than the activity or percentage conversion achieved in a given time. 1, record 75, English, - productivity

Irregularity in the diffusion of solute molecules that occurs in a porous chromatographic support, by the rapid process of mixing of the swirling eddies of the fluid. The phenomenon is due to the fact that (a) the pathlength for some solute molecules is either shorter or longer than that for the bulk of the molecules; and (b) the rate of solvent flow varies in different regions of the porous support. 2, record 76, English, - Eddy%20diffusion

Non-ideal flow occurs when different elements of substrate move through the reactor at varying rates such that they are in contact with the enzyme for variable periods owing to their differing residence times in the reactor giving an opportunity for different extents of reaction to take place and for further reaction of the desired product and side-reactions to take place. Non-ideal flow can be caused by factors such as back-mixing, channelling, or the presence of stagnant flow regions within the reactors.... Eddy diffusion also causes inhomogeneous distribution of fluid. This effect occurs when there are variations in the size and shape of the support particles and because of the tendency of the larger particles to become packed close to the walls of the column such that the flow rate varies over the cross-section of the column. 3, record 76, English, - Eddy%20diffusion

Phenomenon which arises as a result of the build-up of a layer of rejected solute at the membrane surface which impedes solvent flow. The resistance to flow due to this layer thus increases until a point is reached where the rate of diffusion of solute away from the polarization layer equals the rate of deposition. This phenomenon also explains why the solvent flux often becomes invariant with an increasing transmembrane pressure drop. Although solvent flux through a membrane is a hydraulic pressure-activated process and should increase with increasing pressure, a point is reached where the rate of build-up of the solute polarization layer is such that flow is impeded and further increases in pressure have no effect. 2, record 77, English, - concentration%20polarization

When two electrical conductors are connected, an electrical resistance forms at the transition point between the two conductors. This resistance depends on the contact size and state of the surface. Since surfaces are never flat in microscopic measure, contact only takes place at the highest point. If one considers that the contact point is made by conductor metal on conductor metal, it is valid, as for all resistance, that the value is determined by specific resistance, the surface through which the current rate flows and the height of the "contact peaks. "The greater the amount of contact point surfaces there are, the lower the resulting resistance and consequently the greater is the capacity which the contact points can transmit. The conductors must be firmly pressed together so that the distance, the height of the "contact peaks" is as small as possible and the contact area as large as possible. 2, record 78, English, - transition%20resistance

... in many plants water availability is one of the most important factors limiting photosynthesis under natural conditions. Because water is lost from leaves through the same pores(known as stomata) that carbon dioxide enters, the plant must balance carbon dioxide uptake against water loss. ... the TSB [Transportation Safety Board of Canada] analyzed specifically the aircraft steering system, while not ignoring the other factors mentioned above, although no indication was found that they could have contributed to the occurrence. To steer the aircraft on the ground, the pilot in the left seat uses the nose-gear steering wheel on the console to the pilot's left. During take-off and landing, directional control of the aircraft is maintained solely by the rudder. The aircraft's ground steering system comprises several components, including the nose-gear steering wheel, a system of cables and pulleys, and a steering control valve fitted to a nose-wheel steering cylinder, which is attached to the nose-wheel strut. The cable and pulley system links the steering wheel to the control valve. When the pilot turns the steering wheel to the left or right, tension is applied to the cables connected to the pulley on the steering control valve. This action determines the direction and the deflection rate of the nose wheel by allowing hydraulic fluid to enter one side or the other side of the nose-wheel steering cylinder; the steering cylinder then deflects the nose wheel through a system of gears. 3, record 82, English, - aircraft%20steering%20system

4, record 82, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20d%27orientation

The exploration department at Cogema Resources... recognized the technical difficulties and expense encountered in drilling deep vertical holes. The solution was a technique called navigational drilling(or Navi-drilling) that was used in the oil industry and, less often, in mining.... Simply put, navi-drilling allows operators to begin drilling a new hole 500 to 600 metres below the surface by using a pre-existing "pilot hole. "This significantly reduces costs as the same hole is used for up to six navi-drilling holes. A steerable motor with a rotor system turns a cutting bit. The motor is powered by hydraulic force created by the mixture of water and drilling muds pumped inside the drill string. The fluid is pumped through the motor and returns to the surface at a rate of up to 250 litres per minute. Newbergh Industries Limited ("Newbergh") has developed and patented a technology which will greatly enhance the steering currently being used in oil and gas field directional drilling. This technology, which is known under the acronym of "HANDS", which stands for Hydraulic Activated Navigational Drilling System, will be incorporated in a so-called benthousing, which will make this piece of equipment remote adjustable whilst drilling for the first time. Its implication will improve drilling performance in terms of speed as well as quality and will result in considerable cost savings for the oil companies and savings in energy to drill the bore holes. 6, record 84, English, - navigational%20drilling

3, record 84, French, - forage%20multibranche

Growing Degree Days. The underlying idea is that development does not occur unless the temperature exceeds a certain minimum threshold value or base temperature. The base temperatures are determined through research and experimentation and are different for different organisms. It has been found that there are many other factors, which may influence the actual temperature the organism is experiencing or that may influence their growth and development. For instance it is possible that the organism may be experiencing a temperature a few degrees more or lesser than that recorded depending on weather it spends most of its time in the shade or under direct sunlight. Precipitation and the presence of weeds may also indirectly influence the growth and development of insects and plants. The fertility and nutrient content of the soil is directly related to the growth rate of insects and plants. In light of these many factors and some other scientific considerations a base temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit is considered acceptable for all plants and insects. 2, record 87, English, - growing%20degree%2Dday
