Normal fuelling is accomplished through dual fuel nozzle adapters located on the right wing leading edge spar at the fuelling stations. All fuelling operations, except fuel pump control, are accomplished at the fuelling station. Opening the station access door applies DC power to the fuelling system and removes the N3 inhibit to the centre tank fuel pumps. Fuel flows through the dual nozzles to pressurise a fuelling manifold. Fuelling valves control the flow of fuel from the fuelling manifold into each of the three switches on the fuelling panel. A fuel quantity may be preselected for each tank. The fuelling valves close automatically when the preselected quantity is reached or when the tank is full, whichever occurs first. A tank overfill system is provided to prevent fuel spillage. If any fuel is sensed in the surge tanks during fuelling, a signal is sent to close all fuelling valves. The aircraft is filled automatically by hydrant or tank truck pressure. All tanks may be fuelled at the same time. The main tanks may also be fuelled manually through over wing fill ports. There are no over wing fill ports for the centre tank.

An absolute instrument developed by Swedish physicist Knut Johan Angstrom ... for the measurement of direct solar radiation.

OBS

The radiation receiver station consists of two identical manganin strips whose temperatures are measured by attached thermocouples. One of the strips is shaded, while the other is exposed to sunlight. An electrical heating current is passed through the shaded strip so as to raise its temperature to that of the exposed strip. The electric power required to accomplish this is a measure of the solar radiation.

The Orlan spacesuit was used for Russian EVA's on Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. It was designed by the Zvezda OKB [Russia : Experimental Design Bureau], and derived from the Kretchet suit intended for use on the lunar surface. It consisted of flexible limbs attached to a one-piece rigid body/helmet unit. The suit was entered through a hatch in the rear of the torso. The exterior of the hatch housed the life support equipment. Maximum operation time was three hours when the Orlan-D version of the suit was first used on Salyut 6. Later Orlan-DM versions of the suit increased this period to nine hours. The integrated design meant that no external hoses were required as in the American space suits. The suit standard pressure was 0. 40 atmospheres, so that a prebreathe period of only 30 minutes was required. Electrical power and communications were via an umbilical cord to the station. Control of the suit was via a panel on the chest, with the markings in mirror image. The cosmonaut viewed the panel using a mirror on the wrist of the suit.

In 1991, ESA [European Space Agency] launched a programme to promote the industrial utilisation of microgravity : the Research Associations for the Development of Industrial Use of Space(RADIUS) Programme. The objective is to create a new user community that will be ready to use future flight opportunities, including the International Space Station, on a commercial basis. Through the programme, leading scientific organizations, experienced in well-defined areas of microgravity research, are identified and given the support required to define and begin undertaking, with non-space industries, several projects that could lead to space experimentation and could bring solutions or improvements to conventional industrial research.

A specific increment's planning operation may begin several years before the relevant STS launch(or OMV [Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle] deployment from the manned base). A specific increment's executions operations begin with the Station Program's realtime support to launch of the relevant transportation mission(STS/OMV), and generally extends through the initiation of similar support to the respective follow on transportation mission. ELV [Expendable Launch Vehicle] arrivals at Station elements are contained within the relevant increment. For the manned base, increment duration may vary according to the number of STS visits per year(for eight flights per year, increment duration is 45 days; for five flights per year, 72 days). In parallel, Scandinavian planners had been adopting versions of what in Copenhagen was called the finger plan: they put new settlement like beads on a string along public transport routes, in the case of Copenhagen a light rail system, in Stockholm a new underground railway. The most celebrated case was Stockholm, where the famous 1952 General Plan of Sven Markelius and Göran Sidenbladh developed systematic pyramids of density around the stations, and also provided service and other jobs in district centres around these same stations, with the idea that as many as one third would find jobs in the places where they lived (Hall 1992a; Hall 1997).

Radiation constitutes one of the most important hazards for humans during long-term space missions. Leaving Earth's surface exposes human beings to a wide spectrum of radiation particles and energies. The International Space Station provides shielding, but some radiation gets through. Dosimetric Mapping, or Dosmap, attempts to record and map the different types of radiation that get inside Space Station and ultimately could cause harm to humans-including cataracts and cancer. Dosmap's radiation detection devices are called dosimeters. Because of the variety of particles and energies that make up radiation, no single type of dosimeter is capable of providing sufficient information to study radiation, so several different types of dosimeters are used in this experiment. Radiation gathered by the dosimeters will provide scientists information on the nature and distribution of radiation inside the Space Station.

SIR... stands for Standard Interface Rack. SIR is a system for integrating hardware. It is a technology we use to take Earth things to space. The rack contains mechanical parts, called a liner, used to slide drawers in and out, much like a file cabinet. Drawers are used to contain or repackage things and make them flight ready. For example, we can’t take computers to space in the same outer packages or cases we use on Earth because some pieces may float out or the vibration from launch would destroy them. So, we take all the computer's guts from the central processing unit(its brain) and repackage it in one of these drawers. On the rack side, the SIR also provides power and data for the drawers through cables. Power for a drawer comes from a connector in the rack, just like a wall outlet at your house. Data cables serve many purposes, but the main one is for communication. This is so drawers can "talk" to each other, the Space Station, and Earth. For the computer drawer mentioned above, parts are wired to connectors in the drawer. When you slide the drawer into the rack, it connects to cables already in the rack.

The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer.

A fiber optic/pneumatic system controls automatic stop, presser foot/top feed retraction and between-work thread cutter functions. Alternative front edge guides facilitate feeding the two plies in registration.

DEF

A message which has inadvertently passed through one or more nodes trailing or attached to a preceding message without picking up a channel number or without being detected prior to delivery to a terminal station.

CONT

... one which either trails or is attached to a preceding message. Straggler messages may be caused by: garbles during transmission; equipment malfunction; incorrectly prepared, improperly positioned or omitted end-of-message signal for the first message, etc. Straggler messages will not necessarily be addressed to receiving COMMCEN; therefore, message protection is required.
