REMBASS is a system of unattended ground sensors with associated communications, processing and display equipment. The sensors can be hand, air or ballistically emplaced depending on the specific situation. Also, several different sensor technologies are available so the user can select the best sensor for his specific situation. The sensors will detect, classify and locate targets within their range. The information developed by the sensor is sent to a monitoring station through a transmission network composed of relays. The monitoring station contains processing and display equipment so the operator can readily interpret the information and send it elsewhere, if required. 2, record 11, English, - remotely%20monitored%20battlefield%20sensor%20system

Two redundant cable reels support the Mobile Transporter and Mobile Base System, a movable platform that allows the station's robotic arm to move back and forth along the truss during construction and maintenance work. The Trailing Umbilical System 2 cable appears to have been cut by the system designed to sever it if it ever became snarled or tangled. Video down linked from station cameras confirmed the cable was cut. The Trailing Umbilical System 1 was not affected. The inadvertent severing of the cable tripped one of two redundant circuit breakers on the S0 Truss, which provides power to the Mobile Transporter. The transporter is not scheduled to be used in the near future, but the severed Trailing Umbilical System 2 cable can be replaced through a spacewalk to provide the required redundancy. 3, record 33, English, - trailing%20umbilical%20system

Normal fuelling is accomplished through dual fuel nozzle adapters located on the right wing leading edge spar at the fuelling stations. All fuelling operations, except fuel pump control, are accomplished at the fuelling station. Opening the station access door applies DC power to the fuelling system and removes the N3 inhibit to the centre tank fuel pumps. Fuel flows through the dual nozzles to pressurise a fuelling manifold. Fuelling valves control the flow of fuel from the fuelling manifold into each of the three switches on the fuelling panel. A fuel quantity may be preselected for each tank. The fuelling valves close automatically when the preselected quantity is reached or when the tank is full, whichever occurs first. A tank overfill system is provided to prevent fuel spillage. If any fuel is sensed in the surge tanks during fuelling, a signal is sent to close all fuelling valves. The aircraft is filled automatically by hydrant or tank truck pressure. All tanks may be fuelled at the same time. The main tanks may also be fuelled manually through over wing fill ports. There are no over wing fill ports for the centre tank. 4, record 34, English, - fuelling%20station

In one of the larger and more Complex operations ever supported in the Arctic by the National Science Foundation(NSF), an ice breaker was frozen into the perennial pack ice and left to drift for a full year. From October, 1997 to October 1998, the ship served as a floating scientific research station, supporting the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean(SHEBA) project. The mission was to acquire data on the great canopy of pack ice, about the size of the United States, that covers the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Researchers at the ice station studied the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice and snow cover, to determine how these media interact through the surface heat budget, and how the interactions affect climate. 1, record 40, English, - SHEBA

1, record 41, French, - Lieu%20historique%20national%20de%20la%20Grosse%2D%C3%8Ele%2Det%2Dle%2DM%C3%A9morial%2Ddes%2DIrlandais

The Orlan spacesuit was used for Russian EVA's on Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. It was designed by the Zvezda OKB [Russia : Experimental Design Bureau], and derived from the Kretchet suit intended for use on the lunar surface. It consisted of flexible limbs attached to a one-piece rigid body/helmet unit. The suit was entered through a hatch in the rear of the torso. The exterior of the hatch housed the life support equipment. Maximum operation time was three hours when the Orlan-D version of the suit was first used on Salyut 6. Later Orlan-DM versions of the suit increased this period to nine hours. The integrated design meant that no external hoses were required as in the American space suits. The suit standard pressure was 0. 40 atmospheres, so that a prebreathe period of only 30 minutes was required. Electrical power and communications were via an umbilical cord to the station. Control of the suit was via a panel on the chest, with the markings in mirror image. The cosmonaut viewed the panel using a mirror on the wrist of the suit. 8, record 45, English, - Orlan%20spacesuit

TORU(teleoperator control system) is a manual mode system through which a crewmember, located in the Service Module, performs necessary guidance functions in the event of a failure of the automated Kurs rendezvous/docking system of a Progress cargo vehicle(TGK). In this case, the ship's motion will be manually controlled from the TORU control panel, using two hand controllers and a situational display of television signals(ISS) [International Space Station] image plus range, velocity, and relative angular position data from a Progress-mounted Klest-M video camera, shown on two monitors(VKU and Simvol-Ts). 8, record 50, English, - TORU%20docking%20system

The Double Arch Downfired, or W Flame Furnace... is the proven way to efficiently self-combust anthracites in Central Station steam generators.... FW Ball Mills receive coal on each end, from bins and feeders located overhead... Primary air coming from air heaters enters each mill end and dries the coal. Once the coal is ground and classified, the air pneumatically transports it towards the arch cyclone burners... A "W" shaped flame forms in the lower furnace(volume below the arches). Gases then continue their upward move through the conventional upper furnace. In the FW arch fired technology, only a fraction of the air enters the furnace through the arch; the bulk of the air is fed to the furnace through slots in the vertical walls located directly below the arches. 2, record 51, English, - double%2Darch%20furnace%20boiler

Environment Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) : The orbiter's Environmental Control and Life-Support System purifies the cabin air, adds fresh oxygen, keeps the pressure at sea level, heats and cools the air, and provides drinking and wash water. The system also includes lavatory facilities. The cabin is pressurized to sea level(14. 7 psi) with 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent nitrogen, comparable to Earth's atmosphere. The air is circulated through lithium hydroxide/charcoal canisters which remove carbon dioxide. The canisters are changed on a regular basis. Excess heat from the cabin and flight-deck electronics is collected by a circulating coolant water system and transferred to radiator panels on the payload bay doors where it is dissipated. The fuel cells produce about seven pounds of water each hour. It is stored in tanks, and excess water is dumped overboard. The lavatory unit collects and processes body waste, and also collects wash water from the personal hygiene station. The lavatory unit, located in the middeck area, operates much like those on commercial airlines but is designed for a weightless space environment. 3, record 53, English, - environment%20control%20and%20life%20support%20system

1, record 60, French, - programme%20RADIUS

In the summer of 1994 NASA approved adding an optical-quality nadir-viewing window to the U. S. Laboratory Module of the International Space Station. The window can view 39. 5 degrees forward along the axis of the ISS, 32. 2 degrees aft, and a total of 79. 1 degrees from port to starboard. The window is constructed of three panes of fused silica and a fourth protective kick pane made of glass laminate. From outboard to inboard, the panes are : OUTBOARD-An external debris pane that can be changed by an EVA astronaut if damaged. A redundant pressure pane. A primary pressure pane. A scratch or "kick" pane that protects the primary pressure pane from being damaged if the crew or equipment make contact with the window [and] provides a UV-IR coating to protect the crew members. INBOARD-The kick pane is removed during window research operations to take advantage of the full spectrum of radiation that passes through the fused silica panes. When not in use, the window is protected by the kick pane on the inside, and by an external cover on the outside. The switchgear has built-in microprocessors, controlled by Ada software and connected to a data bus running throughout the station. DC-DC converter units stepdown and condition the voltage from 160 to 120 volts DC to form a secondary power system to service the loads through solid-state switchgear. The converters also provide isolation of the secondary from the primary system and maintain uniform power quality throughout the station. 3, record 65, English, - power%20management%20and%20distribution%20subsystem

In parallel, Scandinavian planners had been adopting versions of what in Copenhagen was called the finger plan: they put new settlement like beads on a string along public transport routes, in the case of Copenhagen a light rail system, in Stockholm a new underground railway. The most celebrated case was Stockholm, where the famous 1952 General Plan of Sven Markelius and Göran Sidenbladh developed systematic pyramids of density around the stations, and also provided service and other jobs in district centres around these same stations, with the idea that as many as one third would find jobs in the places where they lived (Hall 1992a; Hall 1997). 2, record 67, English, - finger%20pal

Radiation constitutes one of the most important hazards for humans during long-term space missions. Leaving Earth's surface exposes human beings to a wide spectrum of radiation particles and energies. The International Space Station provides shielding, but some radiation gets through. Dosimetric Mapping, or Dosmap, attempts to record and map the different types of radiation that get inside Space Station and ultimately could cause harm to humans-including cataracts and cancer. Dosmap's radiation detection devices are called dosimeters. Because of the variety of particles and energies that make up radiation, no single type of dosimeter is capable of providing sufficient information to study radiation, so several different types of dosimeters are used in this experiment. Radiation gathered by the dosimeters will provide scientists information on the nature and distribution of radiation inside the Space Station. 3, record 69, English, - dosimetric%20mapping

SIR... stands for Standard Interface Rack. SIR is a system for integrating hardware. It is a technology we use to take Earth things to space. The rack contains mechanical parts, called a liner, used to slide drawers in and out, much like a file cabinet. Drawers are used to contain or repackage things and make them flight ready. For example, we can’t take computers to space in the same outer packages or cases we use on Earth because some pieces may float out or the vibration from launch would destroy them. So, we take all the computer's guts from the central processing unit(its brain) and repackage it in one of these drawers. On the rack side, the SIR also provides power and data for the drawers through cables. Power for a drawer comes from a connector in the rack, just like a wall outlet at your house. Data cables serve many purposes, but the main one is for communication. This is so drawers can "talk" to each other, the Space Station, and Earth. For the computer drawer mentioned above, parts are wired to connectors in the drawer. When you slide the drawer into the rack, it connects to cables already in the rack. 2, record 71, English, - standard%20interface%20rack

The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer. 1, record 74, English, - particle%20counter

Double overlock seamer.... a sewing machine for performing twin overedging and seaming in one high-speed operation. Specially designed top and bottom variable feed dogs pull the two plies through a three needle stitching area with improved, simplified elements for diverting one ply edge while the other is being overcast. The upright overcast edge of the top ply passes through a tunnel formed through the top feed dog. A guide wall attached to the throat plate guides the top edge away from the bottom overedging station. A guard wall can be attached to the presser foot to keep the turned-up top edge away from the seaming needle. A fiber optic/pneumatic system controls automatic stop, presser foot/top feed retraction and between-work thread cutter functions. Alternative front edge guides facilitate feeding the two plies in registration. 1, record 88, English, - double%20overlock%20seamer
