THROUGH TRANSMISSION LOSS [6 records]

Subject field(s)

CONT

Duct lining or wrapping - A duct lining or wrapping is usually a sheet of porous material placed on the inner or outer wall(s) of a duct to introduce sound attenuation and heat insulation. It is often used in air conditioning systems. Linings are more effective in attenuating sound that travels inside along the length of a duct, while wrappings are more effective in preventing sound from being radiated from the duct sidewalls into surrounding spaces

CONT

Lagging, pipe wrapping. Pipes and large ducts often transmit and radiate unwanted noise from pumps, valves, fans, and other equipment into quiet areas through which they pass. The sound transmission loss of the wall can be increased by the addition of lagging or a jacket including sound absorptive material covered by a heavy, solid, impervious skin of plaster, cement, metal, or mass-loaded vinyl.

The analytical electron microscope(AEM) is based on a conventional 200 keV transmission electron microscope(TEM) which has been augmented to include the functions of a scanning transmission electron microscope(STEM) and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). Since the electrons must penetrate through the specimen, the specimen dimensions must be no greater than 1 micrometer thick, and preferably in the range of 100 nm. Bulk specimens may be thinned to this range by a combination of mechanical, chemical, and ion sputtering techniques, all of which are available in the microanalysis laboratory. As an imaging tool, the AEM is capable of 0. 3 nm spatial resolution in the TEM mode, 1 nm resolution in the STEM mode, and 3 nm resolution in the SEM mode. Elemental microanalysis is carried out by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry(EDS) and electron energy loss spectrometry(EELS), which together provide sensitivity to all elements with atomic number > 2. Quantitative analysis is carried out by means of a relative sensitivity factor method based on glass, mineral, and metal alloy standards.

Greenhouse plastics affect tomato pollination by influencing bee activity and bee loss through the ventilation systems. There is a significant difference in bee loss among plastic types.... CT plastic, one of the less commonly used greenhouse plastics, experienced less bee loss than AT Duratherm, Patilux, and both AT Bee Poly and De Klerk together.... The likely explanation for these results is that under CT plastic, bees are less able to visually detect the open vents because of the relatively small contrast between the transmitted light and the light through the vents. Our spectrophotometry results... indicate that of the plastics tested, only CT plastic allows transmission of UV light. Because of this, fewer bees fly out of these greenhouses and die during the winter months.

OBS

Greenhouse tomatoes and pollination by bumblebees. ... Bumble bee keeping in greenhouses has encountered some problems because of the escape of the bees ... through open vents in late winter and early spring. ... New understandings in insect colour vision (Backhaus 1993) have suggested ways by which the visual target of the open vents (daylight with UV) ... versus the greenhouse roof and walls (attenuated UV) can be disguised by coloured transparent flaps or blocked by screening so that the bees are not attracted and can not escape. The former would be easier and cheaper. UV light encourages the germination of spores of grey mould (Botrytis), so UV opaque plastics are favoured.

DEF

A device to pass information between two systems in only one direction. It is used to interconnect two systems holding data of differing security levels, such that information from one(the low system) can pass freely to the other(the high system), but not vice versa. However, this means that the high system cannot request either a pause in transmission, or retransmission of data. The regulator is therefore switchable to operate either as a strict one way regulator(called overflow mode, since data may be lost through overflow), or in a mode permitting limited feedback to prevent data loss(disable mode).
