A solar chimney, or thermal chimney, is a vertical shaft that utilises the radiation of the sun to drive ventilation through a building... During the day, the sun heats the chimney and hence the air inside it. It causes the hot air to rise through the chimney, creating an upward draft. Fresh air is then drawn into the building through lower openings... Thus, ventilating the building. 1, record 1, English, - solar%20chimney

1, record 1, French, - chemin%C3%A9e%20solaire

An esophageal obturator airway [or] EOA is a semi-flexible large-bore tube approximately 30 cm in length, with 19 holes in the shaft and an inflatable cuff. A soft face mask is attached to one end and the other end is closed. The airway was designed for personnel who are not authorized to place endotracheal tubes. One of the distinct advantages is that it can be inserted blindly through the mouth without having to visualize the larynx. It is also helpful in the prevention of gastric regurgitation. The disadvantages are that the tracheo-bronchial tree cannot be adequately suctioned and there is the possibility of esophageal rupture when the cuff is inflated too fully. 5, record 10, English, - esophageal%20obturator%20airway

Greenhouse plastics affect tomato pollination by influencing bee activity and bee loss through the ventilation systems. There is a significant difference in bee loss among plastic types.... CT plastic, one of the less commonly used greenhouse plastics, experienced less bee loss than AT Duratherm, Patilux, and both AT Bee Poly and De Klerk together.... The likely explanation for these results is that under CT plastic, bees are less able to visually detect the open vents because of the relatively small contrast between the transmitted light and the light through the vents. Our spectrophotometry results... indicate that of the plastics tested, only CT plastic allows transmission of UV light. Because of this, fewer bees fly out of these greenhouses and die during the winter months. 1, record 24, English, - greenhouse%20plastic
Record number: 24, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Greenhouse tomatoes and pollination by bumblebees. ... Bumble bee keeping in greenhouses has encountered some problems because of the escape of the bees ... through open vents in late winter and early spring. ... New understandings in insect colour vision (Backhaus 1993) have suggested ways by which the visual target of the open vents (daylight with UV) ... versus the greenhouse roof and walls (attenuated UV) can be disguised by coloured transparent flaps or blocked by screening so that the bees are not attracted and can not escape. The former would be easier and cheaper. UV light encourages the germination of spores of grey mould (Botrytis), so UV opaque plastics are favoured. 1, record 24, English, - greenhouse%20plastic

Greenhouse plastics effect tomato pollination by influencing bee activity and bee loss through the ventilation systems. 1, record 29, English, - CT%20plastic

1, record 29, English, - CT%20plastic

NDHQ 97 is the largest accommodation project ever undertaken by the Department of National Defence or the government. It's more than just moving people from building to building. It's refitting buildings and general office space, using a new design concept called the universal footprint. It's adapting accommodation to re-engineered organizations. It's also purchasing and installing furniture best suited to a modern, dynamic organization. The headquarters will have a new look. In the four buildings... corridors will run along the windows. Offices will be clustered at the centre of each floor. Major traffic will flow outside work areas, not through them. People working in teams will have work areas designed for teams. Offices will have more natural light, better air conditioning and better ventilation. Some screens will have glazed windows to allow natural light to spill through. Each workstation will include large, well-lit work surfaces for computers and overall, will have more usable workspace. Plenty of storage space will be located above and below work surfaces. But employees will be encouraged to make the most of their space by storing information on diskette, rather than in filing cabinets. The look will be cleaner and less cluttered. And whether people are tall or short, they’ll be able to adjust their desks, chairs and computers to the height that's right for them. 3, record 30, English, - universal%20footprint

4, record 30, French, - plan%20universel

Determination of the airtightness of building envelopes by the fan depressurization method.... This is a method for the determination of the airtightness of building envelopes. It is not a method for determining the actual air leakage which occurs through a building envelope under the influence of wind and buoyancy pressures or the operation of heating and ventilation systems.... Principle. A fan or fans are used to exhaust air from the building at rates required to maintain specified pressure differences across the building envelope. The air flows and the pressure differences are measured. The intention is to subject the complete envelope to a simultaneous and similarly directed air pressure. The flows are corrected to reference temperature and reference pressure. The relationship between flow and pressure difference is used to calculate the equivalent leakage area of the building envelope.
