An analog synthesizer generates its sound by electricity passing through capacitors, resisters and other electronic components. The electricity flows through continuously like water, and the sound it produces is a continuous wave. On a digital synthesizer the sound is constructed incrementally by stringing together hundreds of digitized samples or "snapshots" of a sound to simulate a waveform. 3, record 1, English, - digital%20synthesizer

Satellite altimeters have been providing continuous global measurements of sea level, ocean wind speeds and wave heights for over 25 years, and provide a key contribution for monitoring climate change. However, there is a difficulty in retrieving accurate measurements close to the coast. An innovative processing technique has been developed in the UK [United Kingdom] to retrieve this data, and is applied, in this project, to data from the Jason1 series of altimeter satellites for the Mozambique, Madagascar and South Africa coastal regions. The "coastal altimeter data" generated will be delivered through a web-based portal, and the project team will support local partners in using the data... 2, record 11, English, - coastal%20altimeter%20data

The jigging cycle for coal may be represented as a sine wave... in which water velocity is plotted against time. Starting from rest, the water commences to rise through the closely packed bed of coal with increasing velocity. Dilation of this bed begins with the loosening of the uppermost stratum.(In jigging coal it is possible to apply water so as to toss the whole bed solidly upward and then to allow it to open out upward and downward, but this is not feasible with heavy minerals.) As the water column attains a rising velocity of 100 mm./sec., the upper part of the coal bed opens and begins to teeter. Velocity continues to increase, and layer after layer opens until the whole bed is dilated and teetering. Then, as the pulsion stroke passes its peak, the velocity of the water lessens and the suction stroke begins. 5, record 13, English, - dilation

The etalon, consists of two parallel, semi-reflecting mirrors. The etalon is a Fabry-Perot interferometer whose mirrors are separated by a fixed distance. Electromagnetic radiation passes through the first half-silvered mirror(left-hand side). The radiation can then either be transmitted through or reflected by the second mirror. If the radiation is reflected, more electron-hole pairs are stimulated to emit radiation. Constructive interference occurs between the reflected wave and the more recently emitted wave, and the radiation is amplified. 10, record 19, English, - resonant%20cavity

Subatomic particles have various properties and are affected by certain forces that exhibit symmetry. An important property that gives rise to a conservation law is parity. In quantum mechanics all elementary particles and atoms may be described in terms of a wave equation. If this wave equation remains identical after simultaneous reflection of all spatial coordinates of the particle through the origin of the coordinate system, then it is said to have even parity. If such simultaneous reflection results in a wave equation that differs from the original wave equation only in sign, then the particle is said to have odd parity. The overall parity of a collection of particles, such as a molecule, is found to be unchanged with time during physical processes and reactions; this fact is expressed as the law of conservation of parity. 2, record 26, English, - law%20of%20conservation%20of%20parity

A particularly sensitive and accurate type of hygrometer has been developed in recent years by the Instrument Division of the U. S. Weather Bureau. The device, known as the infrared hygrometer, employs a beam of infrared light projected through the air to a photo-electric detector. Two separate wave lengths of light are used; one is absorbed by water vapor and the other passes through undiminished. The ratio of the infrared light transmitted by the different wave lengths is a direct indication of the amount of water vapor in the light path. 1, record 33, English, - infrared%20hygrometer

In the homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) one assumes that the velocity, temperature and pressure between the phases or components are equal. 1, record 34, English, - homogeneous%20equilibrium%20model
Record number: 34, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This assumption is based on the belief that differences in these three potential variables(and chemical potential if chemical reactions are considered) will promote momentum, energy, and mass transfer between the phases rapidly enough so that equilibrium is reached. For example, when one phase is finely dispersed in another phase generating large interfacial area, under certain circumstances this assumption can be made; e. g., bubbly flow of air in water or steam in water at high pressures. The resulting equations resemble those for a pseudo-fluid with mixture properties and an equation of state which links the phases to obtain these mixture thermodynamic properties. Whenever the HEM model is used it is advisable to check the validity of the equilibrium assumptions by using more accurate theoretical models for comparison. For example, rapid acceleration or pressure changes cannot be always accurately modelled with the HEM model; i. e., discharge of flashing vapor-liquid mixtures, or shock wave propagation through a multiphase medium. This is especially true when the pressure change is large when compared to the ambient pressure, or any of the driving potentials are large relative to their reference values. 1, record 34, English, - homogeneous%20equilibrium%20model

Various methods have been proposed to implement a digital-to-analog converter(DAC). One such method is to create a pulse train whose average value is equal to the magnitude of the digital input and then average the pulse train by passing it through a low-pass filter. Conventionally, pulse wave modulators(PWM) are used to create the pulse train from a digital input signal. However, the quality of the analog signal that results from the filtered pulse train may contain considerable noise unless an expensive low-pass filter is constructed. 1, record 38, English, - pulse%20wave%20modulator

Explosion wave. From the French, onde explosive, and coined by Bertholet, signifying that wave or flame which passes through a uniform gaseous mixture with a permanent maximum velocity. The rate of the explosion wave is a definite physical constant for each mixture. The explosion wave travels with the velocity of sound in the burning gas which itself is moving rapidly forward en masse in the same direction, so that the explosion wave is propagated far more rapidly than sound travels in the unburned gas. 1, record 48, English, - explosion%20wave

A certain class of ceramic and metallic materials can be manufactured by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method. Even though by now this process has included reaction systems of the solid-gas and solid-liquid types, the original work was directed towards the reactions investigated where not only the reactants but also the final products formed in the solid phase. These reactions are therefore generally referred to as gasless, solid-solid or condensed phase combustion reactions. 3, record 53, English, - condensed%2Dphase%20combustion

Condensed phase combustion is a complex phenomenon of theoretical and practical interest, in particular, as a method to synthesize materials. This combustion synthesis process involves a self-sustained combustion wave which propagates through initial reactants converting them into a desired product. In condensed phase combustion the initial reactants as well as final, and possibly intermediate products, remain in the condensed phase throughout the reaction. Though the combustion process occurs in a heterogeneous medium composed of reactive particles, typical models of condensed phase combustion treat the medium as homogeneous. 4, record 53, English, - condensed%2Dphase%20combustion

Superfluid Helium What Is It? As the temperature of helium gas is lowered to approximately 5. 2°K, a phase transition to ordinary liquid helium(He I) takes place. The latter is unremarkable and its behavior is identical to any other liquid. As temperature is lowered further(at moderate pressures) helium does not solidify. Rather, it undergoes a phase change to a second liquid phase He II at temperature of about 2. 17°K.... the He II phase persists all the way to absolute zero.... The He II phase is referred to as superfluid helium because of its remarkable properties, including the ability to flow through microscopic passages [holes as small as 10-7 centimeters in diameter] with no apparent friction; the quantization of vortices; and the ability to support four wave modes : first sound which is analogous to sound in ordinary gases and liquids, second sound which carries temperature and entropy perturbations with virtually no pressure variations, third sound which are waves on thin films, and fourth sound which are acoustic-like waves in the "superfluid" component of He II. 5, record 55, English, - helium%20II

The laser gyro need not be mechanically dithered. The same result may be achieved by optical devices. A Faraday cell is a piece of crystal, which changes the phase of a light wave traveling through it as a function of an applied magnetic field. The effect is nonreciprocal. A light beam traveling in one direction is advanced in phase, while a light beam traveling in the other direction is retarded in phase. Reversing the magnetic field reverses the effect. Changing the phase of the light beam has the same effect on frequency as changing the path length. 3, record 60, French, - cheminement%20al%C3%A9atoire

This scheme eliminates the vibration problem, but retains the random walk angular position error. 1, record 63, English, - random%20walk%20angular%20position%20error

Seam Testing Methods... There are number of procedures available which have applicability on different geomembranes... the ultrasonic impedance plane method works on the principle of acoustic impedance. A continuous wave of 160 to 185 kHz is sent through the seamed liner and a characteristic dot pattern is displayed on a CRT screen. Calibration of the dot pattern is required to signify a good seam; otherwise, it is not. The method has potential for all types of geomembranes but still needs additional development work. 1, record 64, English, - ultrasonic%20impedance%20plane%20method

A new device, developed in Norway, harnesses energy from the ocean waves using a vertically oscillating float connected to a piston pump. Possible applications range from desalination of seawater and clean water supply to fish farms, to electricity production using a turbo-generator. This wave energy conversion unit is being developed by the Norwegian company ConWEC AS... The ConWEC device absorbs wave energy by means of a float which oscillates up and down inside a cylindrical structure with a submerged opening through which waves can act. The energy in the waves is converted to mechanical energy by a pump with its piston rigidly connected to the float. Seawater can be pumped into an energy storage in the form of a pressure tank(or possibly an elevated water reservoir) from which a turbine can be run to complete the conversion to electrical energy. 2, record 69, English, - oscillating%20float

(ESWL) works in something like a high-tech Ribe Goldberg sequence. The patient, usually anesthetized from the waist down to obliterate the mild discomfort of the shocks, is strapped onto a pallet and lowered into a specially designed tub full of water. X-rays reveal the precise location of the kidney stone on two television monitors. The physician pushes a button, and a spark plug at the bottom of the tank fires, vaporizing some of the water, which then creates a pressure wave. After bouncing off an elliptical brass reflector that is aimed at the patient's kidney stone, the wave passes harmlessly through the patient's tissues but creates a shattering impact when it collides with the hard stone. More than a thousand individual shocks may be required to completely break up a stone, which will wash away in the patient's urine after it disintegrates. 6, record 71, English, - extracorporeal%20shock%20wave%20lithotripter

Both radio broadcasting and fiber optic systems require three essential elements : a transmitter, a transmission medium and a receiver. Instead of a radio wave transmitter and modulator to set the broadcast frequency and power the signal through the air, optical systems use modulators to establish an optical frequency, or channel, on a laser beam and feed it through a fiber. An optical frequency receiver then collects the messages, much in the manner of a radio set. And, just as tunable radio receivers let listeners select from among a number of stations, a tunable receiver for fiber optic communication is highly desirable. 2, record 73, English, - optical%20frequency

A simple arrangement of two cavities in series showed the feasibility of detecting traces of one gas in another. A klystron was used to generate microwave power which was fed through a wave guide to a transmission-type cavity. Another cavity was mounted in series with and tuned to the same frequency as the first; both cavities were identical except that the second had a gas inlet and outlet ports. From this measuring cell, its microwave energy was sent to a crystal detector. By frequency-modulating the klystron with a 50-cps sine wave voltage on the repeller, a burst of energy passes to the detector each time the generator frequency equals that of the cavities. The detector current is amplified and measured with an oscilloscope. At the beginning of the run, the two cavities are filled with the nitrogen carrier gas and, if the composition in one of the cavities is changed, its electrical size will change... causing a decrease of current from the detector. 1, record 75, English, - crystal%20detector

The Detonation Pressure is a measure of the pressure in the detonation wave front. It is a function of the(velocity of detonation) and the density of an explosive, and is therefore a very important property, especially in hard rock. At the point where the detonation wave has just completed its passage through the column of explosive and the gases have expanded to fill the borehole and are available to commence their work, the borehole pressure is at its peak value. 2, record 79, English, - detonation%20pressure

Sussex wave energy converter... The device involves a solid cylinder carrying circular ducts... The flow of fluid through the ducts, and in turn the operation of pulsating sources is regulated internally by a piston carrying a mechanical load. Matching the load and hydraulic systems in tune with prevailing wave conditions will cause the fluid sources to resonate and absorb energy efficiently. 1, record 89, English, - Sussex%20wave%20energy%20converter

Clark(1945) was the first to show that the routing of a flood wave in a reach could be successfully accomplished(within practical limits of accuracy) by translating the wave into a time equal to the travel time of the reach, and then by routing it through an amount of reservoir storage equivalent to that in the reach. 1, record 92, English, - lag%20and%20route%20technique
