Summer fallow is the practice of keeping land free of all vegetation throughout one season for the purpose of storing a part of the rainfall of that period in the soil for the use of crops the following year. Summer fallow has been practiced in various parts of the world for several centuries, and to a limited extent in some sections of western United States since the country was settled. It is a common practice in the light-rainfall sections of Canada and of the Pacific Northwest at the present time. 3, record 2, English, - cultivated%20summer%20fallow

Customs audits are a reality, and it is best to prepare [in order] to reduce [the] level of risk. Generally, the customs authorities will establish the sectors of activity covered by the audits throughout the following year. Audits can also be triggered by the discovery of an erroneous transaction in a specific sector of activity. The customs authorities will then locate a checklist of importers likely to follow this type of transaction. Therefore, it is essential for any importer to find out how to declare in-bond goods. 1, record 9, English, - customs%20audit

Milking robots are automatic milking systems where milking is performed without direct participation of an operator. The cows are milked throughout the day, including 1 or 2 h needed for cleaning the equipment. An average number of milkings per day is 2. 5–3. The result is by 10–15% higher production. Cows may visit a milking robot voluntarily or they may be directed to do it through automatic gates. There is a great deal of confusion about low-paid workers and low-income workers. Low-paid workers are individuals whose work effort is high, but whose earnings are low. However, they are not necessarily low-income workers if their needs are met only through their own earnings as well as those of other family members. In Canada, a person who works full time throughout the year for minimum wage is considered a low-paid worker. However, if this person lives with a spouse who earns $100, 000 a year, for example, he or she is obviously not in a low-income situation and could not be considered a low-income worker. 6, record 12, English, - low%2Dwage%20worker

The Alpine Skiing World Cup is a circuit of alpine skiing competitions regulated by the FIS. Held at ski resorts across Europe, the continental US, and Canada, competitors compete to achieve the best time in four disciplines : Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G, and Downhill. After every race, points are awarded to the top 30 athletes-The athlete with the most points at the end of the season wins the cup. Sub-prizes are also awarded for athletes with the most point totals in each individual race discipline. The World Cup is held every year, and is considered the premier competition for alpine ski racing after the tetrannual Winter Olympics. Many consider the World Cup to be a more valuable title than the Olympics or the biannual World Championships, since it requires a competitor to ski at an extremely high level in several disciplines throughout the season(and not just in one race). 1, record 22, English, - Alpine%20Skiing%20World%20Cup

A voluntary logbook program was initiated by DFO [Fisheries and Oceans Canada] Science Branch in 1993. Volunteer fishermen record their daily fishing activities including : catch by category(canner and market), number of traps hauled, and the number of soak days. The program has provided daily catch and effort information for approximately 2% of the fishing activity within LFA 25. Participants were located throughout the LFA. Lobsters in LFA 25 are in the canner size category for approximately one molt before growing into market size, therefore the ratio of canner : market can be used as the indicator relative survival after the first year in the fishery. The data showed the same declining trends observed with other indicators for canner and market size lobsters. Annual canner : market ratio trends are declining in all SDs. 1, record 34, English, - Index%20Fishermen%20Program

1, record 34, French, - Programme%20des%20p%C3%AAcheurs%20rep%C3%A8res

The Association of Public Sector Information Professionals(DPI), is a volunteer not-for profit Canadian federal organization. We promote the development of public sector professionals and the effective application of Information Management and Technology(IM/IT) in the Federal Government of Canada and other public sector jurisdictions. This knowledge serves to influence the greater information management(IM) and the information technology(IT) communities through the application of shared best practices. As enablers of many services offered to Canadians, the impact is felt there too. With out the time and dedication of our volunteers throughout the year, DPI and PDW would not exist.

Computers for Schools(CFS) is a national, federal government-led program that operates in cooperation with all provinces and territories, the private and volunteer sectors. The program collects, repairs and refurbishes donated surplus computers from government and private sector sources and distributes them free to schools and libraries throughout Canada. CFS was co-founded in 1993 by Industry Canada and the Telephone Pioneers the largest industry-related volunteer organization in the world. Computers for Schools contributes to the government's Connecting Canadians initiative. Since its inception, CFS has provided more than 300 000 computers to schools and libraries in all provinces and territories. CFS now delivers in excess of 60 000 additional computers each year. In addition to coordinating computer donors and recipients, CFS oversees more than 55 repair and refurbishing centres throughout Canada, where surplus computers are cleaned, refurbished and prepared for delivery. Workshops are staffed by volunteers, including current and retired telecommunications professionals, and students. 2, record 40, English, - Computers%20for%20Schools%20Program

2, record 40, French, - Programme%20des%20ordinateurs%20pour%20les%20%C3%A9coles

Snowline ... is the lowest limit of permanent snow on a mountain. During the cold season, snow will fall onto a mountain and build up. During warmer seasons, the snow may begin to melt. Where the melting is offset by the accumulation of snow, the snow remains all year round - and forms the snowline. The extent of the snowline can vary from year to year on a particular mountain, and is a good indicator of the balance between snowfall and snowmelt. 6, record 44, English, - permanent%20snowline

Snow line [is the] altitude above which or latitude beyond which snow does not melt in summer (usually called the permanent snow line), or, in winter, the line to which snow extends at a given point in time. Factors affecting the location of the snow line are the quantity of snowfall, the steepness of the slope on which snow rests, the exposure of an area to the sun and prevailing winds, the type and velocity of the winds, and the presence or absence of large bodies of water. The level of the snow line is much lower in winter than in summer. It is also affected by distance from the equator, along which it is found at an altitude of c.3 mi (5 km); in polar regions it is at sea level. 4, record 44, English, - permanent%20snowline

World Animal Day is celebrated each year on 4 October. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated, and special events are planned on locations all over the globe. 4 October was originally chosen for World Animal Day because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment. Numerous churches throughout the world observe the Sunday closest to the 4th of October with a blessing for the animals. However, World Animal Day has now gone beyond being the celebration of a Christian saint and is today observed by animal-lovers of all beliefs, nationalities and backgrounds. Animal rescue shelters hold fundraising events and open days, wildlife groups organize information displays, schools undertake animal-related project work and individuals and groups of friends or co-workers donate to animal charities or pledge to sponsor a shelter animal. 1, record 50, English, - World%20Animal%20Day

It is evident that the mountains situated in the tropics have an almost equinoctial yearly sun pattern, whilst in the upper temperate and boreal zones the day span varies widely throughout the year. 1, record 51, French, - cycle%20quotidien%20de%20temp%C3%A9rature

Take-all patch, formerly known as Ophiobolus patch and sometimes called Gaeumannomyces patch, occurs in most cool temperate regions. The disease is often confined to Agrostis spp. growing on poorly drained, wet soils or on soils that have recently been limed heavily, but the pathogen may also affect other turfgrass species. At first, the small, light brown dead patches may resemble those of Gerlachia patch, but take-all patch continues to spread throughout the year... 1, record 55, English, - take%2Dall%20patch

In the mid-1950s, daffodils were chosen to decorate the tables at a tea hosted by Lady Eaton in the downtown Toronto Eaton's store to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. The event was so popular that Canadian Cancer Society volunteers in Toronto created an annual Daffodil Day. The Daffodil Tea became an established event in many communities across the province. On Daffodil Day, some restaurants donated part of their receipts to the Canadian Cancer Society and patrons were given a daffodil as a token of appreciation. When restaurant patrons began offering to pay for their daffodils, Society volunteers realized they could raise funds by selling flowers. The following year, volunteers took to the streets to sell daffodils to the general public. An anonymous donor paid to fly 5, 000 blooms from British Columbia, where the growing season starts early. Daffodil sales raised more than $1, 200 in 1957 and became an annual event. Daffodil Day was eventually extended to Daffodil Days--usually from Thursday to the first Sunday in April. Daffodil fundraising now takes place throughout Canada and across North America, Europe and Australia. 1, record 64, English, - Daffodil%20Days

1, record 64, French, - Jours%20de%20la%20jonquille

The festival is named after Saint Walpurga(known in Scandinavia as "Valborg"; alternative forms are "Walpurgis", "Wealdburg", or "Valderburger"), born in Wessex in 710. She was a niece of Saint Boniface and, according to legend, a daughter to the Saxon prince St. Richard. Together with her brothers she travelled to Franconia, Germany, where she became a nun and lived in the convent of Heidenheim, which was founded by her brother Wunibald. Walpurga died on 25 February 779 and that day still carries her name in the Catholic calendar. However she was not made a saint until 1 May in the same year, and that day carries her name in the Swedish calendar. Historically the Walpurgisnacht is derived from Pagan spring customs, where the arrival of spring was celebrated with bonfires at night. Viking fertility celebrations took place around April 30 and due to Walpurga being declared a saint at that time of year, her name became associated with the celebrations. Walpurga was honored in the same way that Vikings had celebrated spring and as they spread throughout Europe, the two dates became mixed together and created the Walpurgis Night celebration. 1, record 67, English, - Walpurgis%20Night

The Société de Relations d’Affaires HEC Montréal(SRA) is proud to invite you to HEC Montreal Undergraduate Stock Exchange simulation 2006. This year is the ninth edition of the event and we are continuously aiming to recreate the atmosphere and environment of Wall Street's old fashioned trading floor involving shouted negotiation(stocks and options). This year, our principal objective is the magnification of the activity through the welcoming of students from many more universities across Canada and the United States, as well as allowing a large audience to attend to the event and increasing our sponsors’ implication. Therefore, we are expecting more than 400 participants to register that will have the opportunity to experiment the broker profession and that will, this year, have the chance to face expert teams throughout the event. 1, record 74, English, - Undergraduate%20Stock%20Exchange%20simulation

1, record 74, French, - Simulation%20boursi%C3%A8re%20inter%2Duniversitaire

In New England, at least one killing frost and preferably a substantial period of normally cool weather must precede this warm spell in order for it to be considered a true Indian summer. It does not occur every year, and in some years there may be two or three Indian summers. The term is most often heard in the northeastern United States, but its usage extends throughout English-speaking countries. It dates back at least to 1778, but its origin is not certain; the most probable suggestions relate it to the way that the American Indians availed themselves of this extra opportunity to increase their winter stores. The comparable period in Europe is termed the Old Wives’ summer, and, poetically, may be referred to as halcyon days. In England, dependent upon dates of occurrence, such a period may be called St. Martin's summer, St. Luke's summer, and formerly All-hallown summer. 4, record 93, English, - Indian%20summer

8, record 93, French, - %C3%A9t%C3%A9%20des%20Indiens

... the Ogasawara high develops over Japan in August. The vertical structure of this anticyclone is different from the Pacific anticyclone. The Pacific high is the most intense near the surface and there is a cyclone spanning mid- to upper troposphere. By contrast, the Ogasawara high is very deep. It extends from the upper- to lower-troposphere and sometimes reaches the surface. This deep anticyclone, which brings hot and relatively dry climate, is absent in the rainy season of June and July. 3, record 100, English, - Ogasawara%20high
