CONT

Snow snake is played on a track. Snow is piled up at the beginning of the track to a height of about 4 feet. Then the track gradually slopes downward to follow the contour of the earth. A log is then placed on top of the snow pile to make a track that the shooters must throw their snakes in. The community who has the best throws, wins. The best throwers win prizes but more importantly, bragging rights until the next event.

In general, the result of winning a game against the server. More specifically, from the perspective of the server, a loss of a service game. If the server loses the game, he is broken, sometimes in spirit as well as fact.

CONT

DEF

Type of serve in which the player imparts a forward or overspin rotation to the ball causing it to bounce high after ground contact. The spin imparted by the racket is the opposite of what it would be normally.

OBS

Not to be confused with the "American twist (serve)","twist (serve)" or kick serve (=kicker), which is a topspin serve with an added "twist". The term "topspin serve" is a generic. One can deliver a "topspin serve" without it "kicking up" very high. "Kicker": slang. See also "high-kicking serve".

CONT

For the topspin serve you throw the ball above your head, and bend your elbow sharply and bring the racket up so that the ball rolls across the short string and thus departs with topspin on it.

PHR

Strap strung inside shafts of sulky to keep the horse swinging the rear end to the right and left and traveling sideways on its gait.

CONT

Gaiting straps are put on a horse to keep his rear end in line. I’ve put them on trotters on both sides. Sometimes they’ll throw their feet out pretty wide into a wheel or the sulky, particularly on a half-mile track where they’re going at a terrific clip around the turns. A lot of good horses that I’ve raced had to wear gaiting straps over a half-mile track. A gaiting strap catches them up along the stifle and keeps them from throwing their foot out.

CONT

Speed of Release. This is perhaps the most important aspect in the range of the throw. The speed of release is a function of how hard you work and for how long, divided by how heavy the load is. To tidy this up : Relase Speed [equals the] Average force [multiplied by] the time of application [divided by] the mass of implement.

CONT

The approach run plays a key role in increasing the speed of release of the javelin, which is an important factor in determining the throw distance.

OBS

Technique/tactics - throwing events.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Athlétisme
CONT

CONT

It is called a cross-over stride because it is difficult to think of a better name, especially since the term "cross-step" does not really describe the action... The right leg was picked up fairly straight with heel leading, and on landing the right foot was at 90 degrees to the line of throw, resulting in a deceleration of the forward speed of the body. This action, known as the "cross-step", is very seldom seen today.

CONT

As he draws the javelin back, he rotates the body slightly and forces a crossover of the fourth step.

CONT

The change in the angle of the trunk is particularly marked during the so-called "cross-step" immediately prior to the throwing stride ...

An "ugly baby" is a reality that is difficult to confront but impossible to deny because it is blatantly obvious.

OBS

Beware of the “Ugly Baby Syndrome. ” An “Ugly Baby” is developed at the concept phase and you can not put it back. So what happens? It gets dressed up to make it look OK. It hangs around for about 18 years because the factory will “adopt” the ugly baby and resist re-design. The moral of the story is that the concept phase is extremely important to prevent creation of an unworkable design that ends up staying around because no one wants to throw away something they’ve started working with.

For some the experience of riding up a hill will be one of elation but for most, the pain of climbing has been enough to see the bike sent to the darkest recesses of the shed or garage and the reintroduction of tiddly-winks to the daily activities.

CONT

You will get buckets of water thrown over you, you will get balloons from every corner thrown at you and they also have these huge bicycle pump looking things that throw a spout of water several meters. If you are cycling up a steep gradient you might be said to be a captive audience to them. They have no mercy.

CONT

You turn in the dirt road to your right and after a short slope you find a rocky climb, with fairly wide hairpin bends offering a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys. Just before the church of Cigno the tarmac road starts again and after cycling through this small village you get to a crossroads (the highest point this route) where you turn left along a beautiful slope leading to Civorio.

OBS

The term "gradient" may also be used to mean the "grade of a hill", in which case it is usually expressed as a percentage. "Hill" and "slope" are also polysemic.
