Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Our reading has indicated that the over-the-shoulder shot can indicate both a simple overhand shot (i.e., above the shoulder) and a shot in which the shooter swings the stick both behind the back and over the shoulder. 3, record 2, English, - three%2Dquarter%2Darm%20shot
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The upper hand of the shooter is in a position over his shoulder... [and] follows through in a vigorous throwing motion with a snap of the wrist as the lower hand pulls down hard on the butt end of the handle. The body weight transfers from the rear to the front leg... The head of the stick actually ends up pointing to the ground because the body follow-through is so complete. 1, record 2, English, - three%2Dquarter%2Darm%20shot

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 DEF
The Aztec word for a spear throwing stick device. 4, record 3, English, - atlatl
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This projectile propulsion device preceded the bow and arrow. In general, a wooden or bone stick or board with a hand grip at one end and a spur or hook at the other end. The atlatl is used as an extension of the arm in throwing a spear or dart. The spear shaft is socketed and fits into the spur or hook of the Atlatl. Essentially the Atlatl lengthens the length of the spear thrower's arm and with loaded, spring-like, motion can provide the benefit of greater force and distance over that of the hand thrown spear. It is hypothesized that sometimes a stone weight(s)(a. k. a. : Bannerstone, Birdstone, Boatstone) was attached to the Atlatl to provide better balance or to load the device with a spring or bending effect or to diminish the "whoosh" noise created during the throwing process. 4, record 3, English, - atlatl

1, record 3, French, - atlatl

A perforated stone reported only from archaic sites in midwestern and eastern North America and having usually two symmetrical wings that was apparently used primarily as a weight attached to a throwing stick but doubtless had considerable ceremonial significance, having been often buried with the dead. 2, record 4, English, - banner%20stone
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
A specific type of oddly shaped weight, called a banner stone, served as a kind of silencer, stopping a hunter’s prey from being startled by the sound of the throw. Normally, an atlatl makes a distinctive ’zip’ sound when the dart is thrown. But a banner stone, extending sideways like wings on an aeroplane, again about halfway down the atlatl, seems to muffle this sound. 3, record 4, English, - banner%20stone
