Record 1 2018-10-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Presses (Machinery)
  • Waste Management
CONT

Horizontal balers process waste differently than vertical balers. Recyclable waste is thrown into a hopper, and when the hopper is full, a ram from the side compresses the material with a horizontal force until the bale is complete.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Curling
DEF

The line drawn from sideline to sideline, 21 feet in front of the tee line on both ends of a curling sheet, and that thrown rocks must cross to stay in play unless they have struck another rock before.

OBS

A player who slides with the rock and fails to release it before reaching [the hog line of the delivering side] has his shot taken out of play before it reaches any other rock.... Any rock fairly thrown but which does not completely cross [the hog line of the target side] is considered to be out of play and is removed from the ice surface [unless it has previously struck another rock].

OBS

The "hog line" was previously named the "front line" for being the in-play line, as compared to the "back line" which is the out-of-play line. The name "hog line" comes from the fact that is removed from play and declared a "hog" any rock not released before it reaches this line on the delivery side, or any rock not travelling past this line on the target side.

Domaine(s)
  • Curling
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Baseball and Softball
DEF

An off-speed pitch that is thrown with a sudden outward twist of the wrist and calculated to veer down and away from a batter who hits from the same side that the pitcher throws from.

OBS

The golf term "hook" means also a "curve ball". The short "curve" is often used instead of "curve ball".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Baseball et softball
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • North American Football
DEF

The use of the body above the knees by a defending or an attacking player in order to obstruct an opponent.

DEF

... an offensive weapon used to clear a path for the ball carrier.

OBS

The hands must be cupped or closed and kept inside the elbows and not outside the body of either player. Arms may not be extended to push. A blocker may not push, clamp down on, hang on, or encircle an opponent. Players may block an opponent at any time, provided this does not interfere with a pass, a fair catch, a kicker, or a passer and provided it is not too rough. A wide receiver may not be cut down by a block below the knees. A wide receiver may not block an opponent below the waist if he is blocking back toward the ball (crackback block).

OBS

The basic blocks are the cross-body block, in which the body is thrown across the opponent's thighs, and the shoulder block, in which the shoulder does the work. It is permissible to block a player from a position in front of, or to the side of, him, but not use his hands, but the defensive player may use his to ward off or escape the blocker.

CONT

Football. Handling, kicking and throwing the ball in any direction, tackling and blocking are permitted.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Football nord-américain
DEF

CONT

Mechanical corn shellers that were turned by hand or powered by horses were available in the mid 1800's. There were two main types of shellers : the picker-wheel sheller and the cylinder or cage-type sheller. In the picker-wheel sheller the cob was shelled as it was rubbed between a rough surfaced rotating iron disk and a guide wheel which wedged the cob close to the disk until it was shelled. The shelled corn was thrown out the side of the sheller and the shelled corn dropped through the bottom of the sheller into a container.

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Pulp and Paper
CONT

At the heart of the repulping operation is the pulper itself. The most common design, illustrated schematically in Figure 14-3, is the low-consistency pulper with ragger and junker, which is usually run at 5-8% consistency, and may be operated in either continuous or batch mode. Strings, wires and rags are continuously withdrawn from the stock as a "debris rope". Initially, a few "primer wires" are rotated in the stock to start the rope, after which the rope builds on itself. Heavy objects are thrown into a recess at the side of the pulper by centrifugal force; this material is usually removed from the "junking tower" by a bucket elevator or grapple.

CONT

Excess grease is thrown out by the disc into an annular cavity whence it is ejected through an opening on the underside of the end cover. Radial ribs are usually provided in the housing end cover on the supply side to lead the grease directly to the bearing and prevent churning.
