  • Special Water Transport
  • Maneuvering of Ships
  • River and Sea Navigation
DEF

A comparatively small vessel with powerful engines and constructed in such a way as to be able to manoeuvre easily for towage and/or to assist in salvage operations at sea.

CONT

Tugboats are needed to pull or push large ships in confined waters such as in a harbor area and docks, and they are also needed to tow large ships on long ocean voyages.... They are capable of firefighting and salvage duties and may carry large capacity pumps for these purposes. One important design characteristic of a tugboat is its hull form and propulsion system are designed both for a given free running speed and a high thrust at zero speed. Furthermore, its upper deck layout is dictated by the need to get close into a variety of vessels and by the need to keep the towing point above the longitudinal center of lateral pressure so that a lateral pull has a minimum effect on maneuverability.

OBS

towboat; tow boat: Not to be confused with "pusher tug," which can also be referred to as a "towboat."

The solid rocket fuel fills the inside of the rocket from its top to the bottom. In the middle of the rocket is a shaped clearing that provides combustion area and allows the mixture to burn evenly. This shape may be a circle or a star depending upon the type of thrust desired for launch. The rocket's ignition commences by shooting flames down its entire length to initiate the combustion evenly throughout the grain, another term for solid rocket propellant. As the fuel burns and its waste parts are ejected out the nozzle the propellant area grows. As the propellant area grows there is more propellant to burn which means that the rocket's thrust increases.

DEF

[A] cleaning method in which the detergent solution is forced through jets under high pressure into the carpet pile and immediately removed along with loose and emulsified soil through a wet vacuum.

OBS

Many believe steam cleaning or hot water extraction is the best carpet cleaning method available... Hot water extraction utilizes a push-pull stroke for effective carpet cleaning. The hot water sprayer is located on the rear of the extraction wand. When the rearward thrust is made hot water is injected into the carpet pile where it is extracted a split second later by the extraction cup. The forward stroke is used to remove excess moisture and any remaining soil. For heavily soiled areas continuous back and forth motions can be used to increase the temperature of the area to assist in soil removal.

Solar Thermal Propulsion(STP)... uses large area deployable concentrators to focus the Sun's energy on a small heat exchanger, called an absorber, which is cooled by hydrogen gas propellant. The absorber transfers the concentrated heat energy from the Sun to the hydrogen gas. As the gas is heated, it expands and is directed outward through a nozzle. This expanding gas provides enough thrust in the microgravity environment of low earth orbit to transfer the vehicle to a higher energy, geosynchronous orbit around the Earth where the satellite operates.

In applying the principles of electrostrictive hydrodynamics(electrohydrodynamics) it is immediately clear to the aeronautical engineer that a large electrode area is required. Just as a sailboat uses a sail, any vehicle utilizing electrohydrodynamic propulsion must employ a large ballistic electrode to integrate the pressure of plasma "winds" to provide lift or forward thrust. These so-called "electric winds" are ion flows, moving at relatively high velocity. The flows may take various patterns determined by 1) The manner in which the flows are generated, and 2) The curvature of the surfaces which confine them.

Subject field(s)

CONT

A rocket engine is a device in which propellants are burned in a combustion chamber and the resulting high pressure gases are expanded through a specially shaped nozzle to produce thrust. The function of the nozzle is to convert the chemical-thermal energy generated in the combustion chamber into kinetic energy. The nozzle converts the slow moving, high pressure, high temperature gas in the combustion chamber into high velocity gas of lower pressure and temperature. Gas velocities from 2 to 4. 5 kilometers per second can be obtained in rocket nozzles. The nozzles which perform this feat are called DeLaval nozzles(after the inventor) and consist of a convergent and divergent section. The minimum flow area between the convergent and divergent section is called the nozzle throat. The flow area at the end of the divergent section is called the nozzle exit area.

... the Blended-Wing-Body(BWB) concept represents a potential revolution in subsonic transport.... In this study, 800 passenger BWB and conventional airplanes were compared for a 7000 nautical mile design range. ADP-class engines were used with technology levels keyed for a 2015 entry into service(EIS). In every measure, the BWB was found to be superior to the conventional configuration. Key findings for the BWB include : TOGW 15% lower[;] OEW 12% lower [;] Fuel-Burn 28% lower [;] Thrust 27% lower [;] L/D 21% higher [;] DOC 13% lower [. ] The BWB advantage results from a double-deck cabin that extends spanwise as well as lengthwise providing structural and aerodynamic overlap with the wing. This reduces the total wetted area of the airplane and the deep stiff centerbody provides efficient structural wingspan. Relaxed static stability allows optimal span loading, and a trailing-edge high-lift system is not required. Further synergy may be realized through buried engines that ingest the centerbody's boundary layer and thus reduce the effective ram drag.

This adjustment is given in two ways : 1. With the patient in the neutral position, specific contact or contacts are taken on a vertebral process and the thrust is given in a specific direction... The thrust may be rapid with either a slow or fast release. 2. The adjustment is given by moving the patient in a specific direction to take out the active and passive motion at that level. The thrust is then given beyond the passive range of motion. It is possible to vary the velocity and depth or amplitude depending on the area being adjusted...
