Record 1 2009-03-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tectonics
DEF

The body of rock that makes up the hanging wall of a thrust fault.

OBS

thrust sheet; thrust nappe; overthrust sheet; overthrust nappe; sheared nappe; thrust block; thrust plate : terms used at Natural Resources Canada-Earth Sciences Sector.

PHR

Imbricate thrust sheets.

Key term(s)
  • traveled mass

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tectonique
DEF

Record 2 2008-02-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Pumps
  • Aircraft Systems
CONT

In this pump, the pistons are at an angle to the drive shaft and thrust plate. The piston block shaft is connected to the drive shaft by a universal joint... The drive shaft, thrust plate, piston block shaft, and piston block all revolve. The connecting rods are attached to the thrust plate and revolve with it, unlike the swash plate pump where the piston rods slide past a stationary swash plate.

  • Circuits des aéronefs
OBS

Pompe à pistons.

Record 3 2006-10-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Bearings and Bearing Systems (Mechanical Components)
  • Electric Rotary Machines
  • Wind Energy
DEF

[An arrangement of] bearings that supports a [wind turbine’s] horizontal shaft.

CONT

Pillow block bearings are a form of mounted bearing used to provide load support for a rotating shaft axis. The bearing housing mounts to a surface parallel to the shaft axis. Selection of the appropriate bearings can be accomplished based on the shaft size and the radial and thrust load requirements. Pillow block bearings are designed to support a shaft : the mounting surface is on a parallel line with the axis of the shaft.

Record 4 2004-05-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Launchers (Astronautics)
CONT

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Transport of Water (Water Supply)
  • Water Distribution (Water Supply)
  • Applications of Concrete
  • Long-Distance Pipelines
CONT

When you start to push big volumes of water around in pipes at high pressures, the laws of physics can cause some problems-especially going around corners. This situation is particularly problematic when the pump is started, and the pressure in the pipes rises dramatically. This can cause tremendous forces on elbows and junctions in the system, and as a result they need to be reinforced with thrust blocks... Basically nothing more than a rough block of poured concrete, the thrust block braces the pipe, thus helping to prevent ruptures in the line.

  • Adduction d'eau (Alimentation en eau)
  • Distribution de l'eau
  • Utilisation du béton
  • Canalisations à grande distance
DEF

Ancrage destiné à empêcher le mouvement longitudinal d'une canalisation.

DEF

Enrobage, bloc ou butée de béton servant par sa masse, à contrer la poussée d'une conduite d'eau sous pression.

Record 6 1988-09-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Commercial Law
CONT

Assiduous lobbying gave the company sufficient influence with the private bills committee of the legislature that it could offset some of the thrust of populist pressure that eventually emerged in Vancouver as elsewhere. For example, when Vancouver moved to strike the protective buy-out clause in its charter in 1900, the company was able to block this initiative.
