THRUST FACE [3 records]

Record 1 2007-08-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
DEF

A solid masonry dam with a transverse cross section approximately triangular in shape, which depends on its own weight for stability against overturning or horizontal movement.

OBS

Its mass is such that the horizontal water thrust on the upstream face is transmitted to a point within its foundation, usually within the middle third.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Barrages et chaussées
DEF

Barrage en béton, à profil triangulaire, résistant à la poussée de l'eau par son poids.

Spanish

Campo(s) temático(s)
  • Presas y calzadas elevadas
DEF

Construcción voluminosa que opone al empuje del agua su propio peso.

Record 2 2004-05-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Launchers (Astronautics)
CONT

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1.

Record 3 1988-12-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Joining Elements (Mechanical Components)
DEF

A screw thread whose forward face is perpendicular to the screw axis and whose back face is at an angle to the axis, so that the thread is both efficient in transmitting power and strong.

CONT

The buttress or breech-block thread is designed for transmitting an exceptionally high pressure in one direction only. In its original form the pressure flank was perpendicular to the thread axis, and the trailing flank sloped at 45°. To simplify the cutting of the face, modern practice is to give the pressure flank a 7° slope. This form of thread is applicable for assembled tubular members because of the small radial thrust. Buttress threads are used on breech mechanisms of large guns and for airplane propeller hubs.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments d'assemblage (Composants mécaniques)
CONT

[...] le filet en dents de scie ou "butée" peut supporter une charge dans une seule direction, en s'appuyant sur la surface perpendiculaire à l'axe.
