... Pit Saws [inside which thin] or very narrow saw blades are stretched within a frame to prevent distortion of the blade when in use.

The blades are often attached to the top and bottom of the frame by means of an iron ring which is split half way to receive them. They are tensioned by folding wedges below the lower ring, or by means of a thumbscrew at the top.

... [A tool] used to scribe a true line along the edge of a board. This tool, usually of wood, has a head which slides on a beam that is just under 8" long. By turning a thumbscrew you can fasten the head at any end along the beam. At the end of the beam, there is a projecting spur... the spur scores the required line.
