During the 1970-71 crop year, a procedure known as "pooling of grain" was introduced at the ports of Vancouver and Thunder Bay to reduce the amount of switching required. Under this system, all Wheat Board grain, that is export wheat, oats and barley(except selected lots), is placed at any terminal for unloading, no matter to which elevator company it is consigned. Time is saved by eliminating the switching formerly required to effect mandatory delivery to the elevator company indicated on the bill of lading.

By definition, thunder is the loud noise that occurs when atmospheric gases are suddenly heated by a discharge of lightning. Thunder [or thunderclap] is also the huge crash that gets the adrenaline running through the veins, especially when it follows a lightning strike too close for comfort!

Because light travels at a faster speed than sound, you can see a lightning bolt before the sound of thunder reaches you. To judge how close lightning is, count the seconds between the flash and the thunder clap. Each second represents about 300 metres. If you can count less than 30 seconds between the lightning strike and the thunder, this means that the storm is less than 10 km away and there is an 80% chance the next strike will happen within that 10 km.

Between 1900 and 1930, terminal elevator construction at Thunder Bay continued at a fast pace. In 1900, there were five terminals containing a total port storage capacity of 151 500 tonnes : in 1910, 15 terminals with storage capacity of 700 000 tonnes : in 1920 18 terminals with storage capacity of 1. 3 million tonnes and in 1930, 26 terminals with a total port storage capacity of 2. 3 million tonnes. Since 1930, construction activity has slowed. Today, there are 12 terminals with just over 2 million tonnes of storage capacity.
