3, record 1, French, - asthme%20d%27orage

A mesocyclone is a vortex of air, approximately 2 to 10 miles in diameter, within a convective storm. In a mesocyclone, air rises and rotates around a vertical axis, usually in the same direction as low pressure systems. They are most often associated with a localised low-pressure region within a severe thunderstorm. Such storms can feature strong surface winds and severe hail. Mesocyclones often occur together with updrafts in supercells, where tornadoes may form. Mesocyclones are believed to form when strong changes of wind speed and/or direction with height("wind shear") sets parts of the lower atmosphere spinning in invisible tube-like rolls. The convective updraft of a thunderstorm is then thought to draw up this spinning air, tilting the rolls’ orientation upward(from parallel to the ground to perpendicular) and causing the entire updraft to rotate as a vertical column. 2, record 2, English, - mesocyclone

2, record 2, French, - m%C3%A9socyclone

Wall clouds can range from a fraction of a mile up to nearly five miles in diameter, and normally are found on the south or southwest(inflow) side of the thunderstorm. Even though this cloud is lowering, it remains attached to the rain free cloud base of the thunderstorm. It is usually located south or southwest of the visible precipitation area, and marks the strongest updraft in the thunderstorm. The wall cloud develops as the strong updraft draws in surface moisture from several miles away. 3, record 6, English, - wall%20cloud

Saint Elmo's fire occurred during bad weather(thunderstorm, etc.). Corona discharge occurred when very strong electrical field develops. "When this luminous effect occurs on or near power lines, it is known as corona discharge, a phenomenon similar to Saint Elmo's Fire. Sometimes this ionized air detaches itself from the lines and moves about independently of them. The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 41, English, - supercell%20tornado

Supercell [is] a thunderstorm with a persistent rotating updraft. Supercells are rare, but are responsible for a remarkably high percentage of severe weather events-especially tornadoes, extremely large hail and damaging straight-line winds. They frequently travel to the right of the main environmental winds(i. e., they are right movers). Radar characteristics often(but not always) include a hook or pendant, bounded weak echo region(BWER), V-notch, mesocyclone, and sometimes a TVS [Tornado Vortex Signature]. Visual characteristics often include a rain-free base(with or without a wall cloud), tail cloud, flanking line, overshooting top, and back-sheared anvil, all of which normally are observed in or near the right rear or southwest part of the storm. Storms exhibiting these characteristics often are called classic supercells; however HP(High Precipitation) storms and LP(Low Precipitation) storms also are supercell varieties. 3, record 43, English, - classic%20supercell

Travelling ionospheric disturbances ... are probably a cause of focusing and defocusing of radio waves. The disturbance usually appears at higher frequencies, gradually affecting lower frequencies. Some are associated with magnetic storms and originate in the auroral zone. These may travel great distances. Others appear to be more localised, originating in the troposphere in local weather. 4, record 51, English, - travelling%20ionospheric%20disturbance

Travelling Ionospheric Disturbance(TID) is a ripple or wave in the electron density structure that propagates horizontally which affects the refraction of radiowaves and so degrades directional finders. An issue of considerable interest is the so-called multicellular thunderstorm system, as opposed to supercells, which are often presumed to be unicellular. A form of multicellular convection that has already been simulated extensively is the squall line. The typical method for simulating this form of deep line-oriented convection has been to release a number of laterally-aligned IB's. After the initial storms develop, their outflows merge, producing a line of convection resembling a squall line. Squall lines are not the only type of multicellular convection observed, however. In isolated multicell storms, a succession of updrafts is typical. 1, record 59, English, - multicellular%20thunderstorm%20system
Record number: 59, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Thunderstorms are often classified into a spectrum based on their cell structure : single cells, multicellular storms, and supercells. The type of storm depends on the instability and relative wind conditions at different layers of the atmosphere(shear). The "single-cell"(unicell) thunderstorm is [a] three-stage situation... usually lasting about 30 minutes from the start of significant precipitation. A severe unicell storm is often referred to as a pulse thunderstorm.... In a multicell thunderstorm, several thunderstorm cells merge into a larger system. The cloud becomes divided into updraft and downdraft regions separated by a gust front. The gust front may extend for several miles ahead of the storm, bringing with it increases in wind speed and atmospheric pressure, decreases in temperature, and shifts in wind direction. The storm itself will have different portions sequentually going through the various thunderstorm stages. In many cases the immature cells develop along a line known as a "flanking line, "resulting in what is known as a line multicell. 6, record 59, English, - multicellular%20thunderstorm%20system

The squall line thunderstorm is a solid or broken line of thunderstorms that form ahead of a large scale boundary such as a cold front. Although a squall line thunderstorm can produce a tornado, it is most likely to produce strong straight-line winds, downbursts, and large hail. Winds associated with a squall line can easily exceed 100 mph and give the appearance(and sound) a tornado has struck. 4, record 61, English, - squall%20line

... many weather phenomena occur on the ’mesoscale’... Mesoscale is believed to play an important role in transferring energy from the large scale down to the small scales.... Energy Cascade. As we go down scales, we see finer and finer structures. Many of these structures are due to certain types of instabilities that inherently limit the size and duration of the phenomena. Also, there exist exchanges of energy, heat, moisture and momentum among all scales. Example : A thunderstorm feeds off convective instabilities... created by e. g., synoptic-scale cyclones.... The thunderstorm in turn can produce tornadoes... Strong winds in the tornado creates turbulent eddies which then dissipate and eventually turn the kinetic energy into heat. Convective activities can also feed back into the large scale and enhancing synoptic scale cyclones. Most of the energy transfer in the atmosphere is downscale-starting from differential heating with latitude and land-sea contrast on the planetary scales.(Energy in the atmosphere can also transfer upscale). We call the energy transfer among scales energy cascade. 3, record 72, English, - energy%20cascade

The dry-line is an area where the relatively dry air from the west that has passed over the Rocky Mountains and warmed by compression, butts up against and flows over very warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. This boundary may also be referred to as the dew point front because dew point temperatures can change as much as 9°C/km. This boundary can occur as far north as the Dakotas, and as far east as the Texas-Louisiana border, but are most common on the east side of the Rockies. When the rapidly descending air strikes the ground, it spreads outward in all directions in a circle, like a fast-running faucet hitting the sink bottom. Dr. Fujita has defined downbursts as a surface wind in excess of 62 km/hr(39 mph) caused by a small-scale downdraft from the base of a convective cloud. The precipitation from this cloud is very weak, and most rain evaporates before reaching the ground. But this causes one more severe feature : A dry downburst. Great damages to property and life in the Middle-East have occurred as a result of dry downbursts. The surface air under the alto-Cb is extremely hot and dry(humidity less than 10%). The rain falling from the thunderstorm under the downdraft evaporates as a result of the dry air. Evaporation causes the air to cool, which increases the speed of the downburst. Sustained winds can reach 160 km/h(100 mph) or more, for a few minutes. In Israel, the dry downbursts usually occur over the desert regions, in the south and east, when the humidity is very low. 2, record 77, English, - dry%20downburst

The gustnado has been accepted as a "type of tornado" but is not associated with the typical tornado characteristics. It is a brief, intense vortex that forms on the leading edge of severe gust fronts. Scud and debris or dirt may be seen but a condensation funnel is usually absent. They will last from a few seconds to a minute and are strong enough to cause minor damage. They are distinguished from a true tornado by their location under an advancing dark cloud bank ahead of the rain core. The leading edge of a gust front(or downburst) often creates an area of convergence which can lead to future thunderstorm growth; close monitoring of visible gust fronts becomes very important in forecsting areas of future storm development. Gust fronts from a line of cells, such as a squall line, can form an elongated area of divergence and convergence. These elongated areas or squall line gust fronts are important components to the squall line structure, and often times a producer of severe weather due to straight-line winds. 3, record 92, English, - straight%2Dline%20winds

1, record 92, French, - vents%20rectilignes

A tornado family is a group of tornadoes spawned by a single thunderstorm. A "family" has had as many as 7 tornadoes, although two is much more common. The family gets a name based on the most damaging event. In 1991, a tornado passed over an underpass on the Kansas Turnpike, resulting in a famous video. That tornado was the fourth and last member of the Andover tornado family. The Andover tornado was the third tornado from that thunderstorm and it killed 17 people. 3, record 93, English, - tornado%20outbreak
