The hammer handle should always be tight in the head... The eye or hole in the hammer head is made with a slight taper in both directions from the center. After the handle, which is tapered to fit the eye, is inserted, in the head, a steel or wooden wedge is driven into the end of the handle that is inserted into the head. This wedge expands the handle and causes it to fill the opposite taper in the eye. Thus the handle is wedged in both directions... 4, record 2, English, - wedge

Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The surge-block is slowly lowered each time resistance begins to decrease. 2, record 7, English, - surge%20block

Joint in which the tenon is shaped like a dove's spread tail and fits into a corresponding mortise. The mortise is usually slightly tapered toward one end to obtain a tight fit. It is widely used for the mounting of sights. Its components are more precisely referred to as "dovetail joint", "dovetail tenon" or "dovetail mortaise". 1, record 15, English, - dovetail

One drawback of this approach is the problem of tolerance stack-up : when two or more parts are to be fit together, the size of their tolerances often determines how well they will match. Should one part fall at a lower limit of its specification, and a matching part at its upper limit, a tight fit is unlikely. Even if the parts are rated acceptable initially, the link between them is likely to wear more quickly than one made from parts whose dimensions have been centered more exactly. 1, record 17, English, - tolerance%20stack%2Dup
