National Non-Smoking Week(NNSW) has been observed for more than 30 years. It is one of the longest running and most important events in Canada's ongoing public health education efforts. Established in 1977 by the Canadian Council for Tobacco Control(formerly the Canadian Council on Smoking and Health), its goals are : to educate Canadians about the dangers of smoking; to prevent people who do not smoke from beginning to smoke and becoming addicted to tobacco; to help people quit smoking; to promote the right of individuals to breathe air unpolluted by tobacco smoke; to denormalize the tobacco industry, tobacco industry marketing practices, tobacco products, and tobacco use; and to assist in the attainment of a smoke-free society in Canada.

Fondée en 1977 par le Conseil canadien pour le contrôle du tabac (anciennement le Conseil canadien sur le tabagisme et la santé), ses objectifs sont : renseigner les Canadiens sur les dangers du tabagisme; empêcher les non-fumeurs de commencer à fumer et de développer une dépendance au tabac; aider les fumeurs à renoncer au tabagisme; faire valoir le droit des personnes de respirer un air non pollué par la fumée de tabac; dénormaliser l'industrie du tabac, ses pratiques de commercialisation, les produits du tabac et le tabagisme; aider à créer une société sans fumée au Canada.

A smoke-free policy is one that limits or eliminates the use of smoke-producing tobacco. The primary concern of a smoke-free policy is secondhand smoke. A tobacco-free policy limits or eliminates the use of any tobacco product, including, but not limited to, spit tobacco, snus, other “smokeless” products, hookah, etc. The primary concern of a tobacco-free policy is overall health and ethical behavior of the institution. A tobacco-free policy also addresses tobacco sales, marketing, and sponsorship. The acceptance of tobacco industry funding is not allowed. Some tobacco-free policies have also required the college or university to divest all stocks held in tobacco companies... "Tobacco free" emphasizes the health of all, including the user. "Smoke free" is primarily about the health of other people(due to secondhand smoke exposure).

Leaf Tobacco Industry : Establishments primarily engaged in final sorting, grading, re-drying, treating and packing tobacco leaf in hogsheads. These establishments customarily store the dried tobacco in the hogsheads for a period of time which may be several years, i. e. aging the tobacco. In most cases the hogsheads of tobacco are shipped directly to the tobacco products factory while in other cases the tobacco is removed from the hogsheads, stemmed and made ready for further manufacture before being sent to the tobacco products factory.

Since 1985, Sport Canada has had a policy in place which precludes all National Sport Organizations receiving federal government funds from associating in any sponsorship, promotional or other financial arrangements with the tobacco products industry for events of programs predominantly involving amateur athletes.
