It is bowl-shaped, either low and flat, or high and pointed, usually with a spike on the top and two or three plume holders on the front. It has a sliding nasal with both ends expanded into plates. Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
CONT

Introduced by Varco in 1982, the Top Drive Drilling System (TDS) revolutionized oil and gas drilling, replacing the traditional rotary table approach on virtually all offshore rigs with dramatic gains in drilling productivity and safety.

OBS

top drive : A device similar to a power swivel that is used in place of the rotary table to turn the drill stem. It also includes power tongs. Modern top drives combine the elevator, the tongs, the swivel, and the hook. Even though the rotary table assembly is not used to rotate the drill stem and bit, the top-drive system retains it to provide a place to set the slips to suspend the drill stem when drilling stops.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cranes (Hoisting and Lifting)
CONT

The... stevedoring crane... is generally of nonswing-boom construction... The load is usually carried on the traction wheels and the steering is at the rear, so that the transportation of a load does not adversely affect the traction or the steering of the vehicle. The large driving wheels in front are suited to carry the concentration of tractor and working load, thus providing a maximum of tractive effort for traveling, light or loaded. This type of crane is generally of 5-ton capacity and has a boom, hinged on top of the frame, providing the maximum of reach with a minimum of required headroom. The boom is generally of balanced cantilever girder design, power-operated, and can be raised and lowered by power from the driver's seat. It can also be adjusted-without a load on the hook-to any of a number of positions of reach and height of hook, depending on the character of the load and the overhead conditions in the operating area.

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

A supercell with "text-book" like features such as a well-defined hook echo on a radar scope and the precipitation core downwind of the wall cloud and rain free storm base.

CONT

Supercell [is] a thunderstorm with a persistent rotating updraft. Supercells are rare, but are responsible for a remarkably high percentage of severe weather events-especially tornadoes, extremely large hail and damaging straight-line winds. They frequently travel to the right of the main environmental winds(i. e., they are right movers). Radar characteristics often(but not always) include a hook or pendant, bounded weak echo region(BWER), V-notch, mesocyclone, and sometimes a TVS [Tornado Vortex Signature]. Visual characteristics often include a rain-free base(with or without a wall cloud), tail cloud, flanking line, overshooting top, and back-sheared anvil, all of which normally are observed in or near the right rear or southwest part of the storm. Storms exhibiting these characteristics often are called classic supercells; however HP(High Precipitation) storms and LP(Low Precipitation) storms also are supercell varieties.

CONT

The severe version of a worst-last storm is also a supercell type, and is either called a "classic supercell" (the standard supercell type) or an "LP (low-precipitation) supercell" - a dry-weather, high wind shear version. ... The classic supercell has a larger, darker appearance and accounts for most of the major tornado events everywhere.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
CONT
