CONT

The use of sucker control chemicals has become standard practice for most burley [tobacco] growers, most of whom use a systemic growth regulator, 1,2-dihydro- 3,6-pyridazinedione (MH).

OBS

Suckers may be controlled by removing them by hand. This is a slow and back-breaking chore. Another way... is to place a small amount of a special oil and water emulsion on the top of the plant immediately after topping. This oil runs down the stalk and lodges in the base of the leaf junction surrounding the emerging sucker. It will quite effectively stop the growth of the sucker....

OBS

Potato virus P. [It] is now considered to be a distinct possible carlavirus, although the extent of its relationship to PVS [Potato virus S] and other carlavirus (especially PRDV [Potato rough dwarf virus]) has yet to be determined ... PVP is transmitted by Myzus persicae and possibly other aphid species.

OBS

Leaves of infected potatoes may show a mild mosaic, roughness of the surface, waviness of the leaf margin or no symptoms at all depending on the variety and on the weather. Some hypersensitive varieties develop top necrosis.

OBS

Potato is its only known natural host.

OBS

"PVA" is the approved abbreviation according to several sources.

French

Domaine(s)

  • Culture des plantes sarclées
CONT

DEF

Instrument ... used to measure water potential of plant leaves.

CONT

Simply put, the pressure chamber ... is just a device for applying air pressure to a leaf (or small shoot), where most of the leaf is inside the chamber but a small part of the leaf stem (the petiole) is exposed to the outside of the chamber through a seal. The amount of pressure that it takes to cause water to appear at the petiole tells you how much tension the leaf is experiencing on its water: a high value of pressure means a high value of tension and a high degree of water stress. The units of pressure most commonly used are the Bar (1 Bar = 14.5 pounds per square inch) and the megapascal (1 MPa = 10 bars).

CONT

How is water potential measured?...-Pressure bomb(pressure chamber) : measures [psi subscript w] of whole leaves, stems :-when a stem or leaf is cut off of a plant, the sap is sucked back into the xylem, since it is under tension;-the tissue is sealed inside a steel chamber, with the cut end protruding;-pressure is applied(using compressed nitrogen) until the sap is pushed back up to the top; this amount of pressure is equal but opposite to the [Psi subscript w] of the tissue.

OBS

There are different types of pressure chambers, some using a tank of high pressure gas, some using a hand-pump, but all work on the same basic principle and in most cases the operation and use of the different types of pressure chambers is identical.

CONT

Since our model employs a single layer of vegetation, there is only one pair of air resistors to consider within the vegetation canopy : one between the leaf surface and the surrounding air and another between the ground surface and the interleaf air spaces. After that, the ground fluxes and leaf fluxes join and move above the canopy through air resistance at the top and above the canopy, called ra; this resistance, like all resistances we have see thus far, decreases with increasing wind speed.

CONT

The transpiration flux must pass through several resistors between the interior of the leaf and the airstream above the plant canopy. First is the resistance imposed by the leaf skin, then the air resistance in the leaf boundary layer, and finally the air resistance between the interleaf air spaces and the atmosphere above the plant canopy.
